Well, I didn't see a "fanfic" section here anymore, and this technically isn't a fanfic, so I see no reason why this doesn't fit.

I've been writing a bit here and there, mainly because of boredom. I've gotten a bit into it, but I wonder what you think of it so far. Just remember. this is my work, not yours. Please be respectful.

Chapter 1
14:26 Local Time
107km Outside Ketak City Limits
7th UEN Fleet, 3rd Marine Armored

W.O. Jonah peered out through the canopy of his Vulture, surveying the farmland below. Its patchwork appearance was pleasing, even for someone who grew up on Earth. Working their way through the farmlands were the 3rd Marine Armored, a relatively small group of about 60 men and their armored support. Most of the men wore the standard Marine combat uniform and wielded various weapons, from the simple M13 assault rifle to the M81 LMG, a beast of weapon capable of tearing through most any infantry armor available. A few men wore the HERCULES Powered-Armored Exoskeleton, a bulky contraption that could stand up to most anything, and allowed the men wearing them such feats as lifting LAVs and even tearing down buildings. Not to mention the mounted miniguns or rockets attached to the frames. Forming their armored component was a set of two M45 ?Dualie? MBTs. From his time in basic, Jonah and learned that they were most directly designed after the old US Abhrams MBT. He could see the resemblance; though the ?Dualie? was squatter, and had two cannons instead of one.

In the center of the formation was one of the most impressive machines in the UEN?s arsenal; the M67 ?God Walker? Heavy Armored Mech. 10 tonnes of quadruped pissed and mean and guns, it was one of the most devastating weapons that the general infantry had. Close to a city block in size, standard armament included 4 175mm cannons, 7 .50 cal machine guns, and you damn near had to set a nuke off underneath it to put it down too. The one in this qroup had forgone the rail gun for an assortment of AA weapons though. The men moved on, loose in formation around the God Walker.

Turning back to his console, Jonah ran over his own Vulture?s readouts. In addition to all that armor the 3rd had been assigned an air escort as well. Four Vulture?s including his own flew in a patrol pattern over the men, keeping an eye on the forest to their right, which led up into the mountains. The Vulture was a formidable aircraft, even if a bit dated in this day of FTL and jet propulsion. Shaped essentially like a cross, with the cockpit at the front, 2 tilt-rotors on the ends of the cross and one in the back. Mounted to the cockpit were the Vulture?s standard weapons; a 25mm cannon, and two side-mounted miniguns. Underneath the Vulture is where the magic happened though; the Vulture was capable of sporting many different configurations, from extra ordinance to troop transport to supplies, if you needed it, the Vulture could do it. For today?s patrol, the Vultures had been loaded with Air-to-Surface rockets, extra flares and chaffs, and even guided missiles. A bit overboard for a patrol, but then Jonah was never one to complain about too much firepower. Everything checking out, Jonah heard V-2, his wingman, key in over the comms.

?V-4, everything looks clear here. Let?s get a flyby of the forest, make sure we didn?t miss any.?

?Understood V-2. Moving into scanning route.?

It had been like this for months. Lately the ICC (Independent Colony Coalition) had been hiding small groups of soldiers on colony worlds farther and farther from the frontlines. While these small groups often were unable to cause serious harm, they were a PR nightmare, and the UEC (United Earth and Colonies) had been fielding more and more units to search for and fight these groups, just to sooth nerves. Boring work, certainly for Jonah at least, who had spent most of his time on forward bases and ships, being shot at or shooting back. Jonah understood why he was here of course; even the best soldiers needed downtime, and a relatively easy assignment like Ketak was something to keep occupied. That, and having the famed ?hero? patrolling your colony?s border calmed a lot of nerves too, though Jonah swore if he had to watch the vid of the Admiral pinning that medal to his chest one more time he?d go insane.

Jonah settled back into the cockpit, and pulled up the scanning equipment?s screen. Relatively little revealed itself. Nothing more than native wildlife, and some houses out in the woods. A few odd heat signatures flirted in and out of view, but nothing that caused any alarm. Ketak was important due to the FTL gate built here after it became an agricultural center; however it was considered too far backwater to be an overly important target. While controlling the FTL gate would lend an advantage in attacking several other UEC targets, to attack through the gate would be insane; every garrison in the sector would be alerted and respond almost immediately, and non-FTL gate travel, though less obvious and allowing for entry anywhere one wanted, took far longer and was far less precise; not the ideal conditions for an assault.

Still, these flickers across the screen were driving Jonah nuts though. No matter how he tried, he couldn?t focus the equipment in on them for a clear image.

?V-4 here. Getting some odd static. What?s the image on yours like??

?Clear. Nothing unexpected or unclear. Forget to dust V-4??

?Right. Thanks smartass.?

?Anything to he-?

Jonah?s screen suddenly flashed bright red; the warning siren blared. V-2 exploded mid-air, the missile?s trail clearly visible from the forest. Acting purely on impulse, Jonah popped chaff, and pushed the Vulture hard left. The second missile lost him through the chaff and spiraled off aimlessly before exploding.

?Bird down! Bird down! This is V-4! I repeat; Vulture down! V-2 is down!?
