Have you ever played a game and were so pulled into it that you formed a bond with your character? I don't mean like the creepy Japan otaku guys who marry characters and have the blow up dolls and what not I just mean feeling a connection with the character. More often then not its in games where you can make your own like Fable, Mass Effect, Diablo, Too Human, etc.

My character had to have been Atlas. He was a Tanked Druid on Diablo II. The only stats I really bothered to pump up were Carrion Vine, Lycanthrope, Werebear, and Werewolf. By time I had gotten him to Lvl 99 I had beaten Diablo II a few times over. Every now and then I try to recreate him but it just doesn't feel the same as the old Atlas.

Whats a character you've felt a connection with?

Weird. I've never once felt a connection like that with a scripted character like that. Whenever I play as a main character like Dante the closest I get to being immersed is "YEAH! LETS GO FUCK SHIT UP!" or Gordon Freeman I'm just like "Oh god I've got no idea whats going on but thank god I've got this Physics Cannon!"

Do I give a shit about what happens to the character in next few minutes?
-Yes I do, my gameplay progress sort of depends on it.

Do I write epic poems about heroism of my coutless mages, necromancers and jedis once I´ve finished the game?
-Not really, I just use the same name for all of them.

I mean, I could understand "bonding" with NPCs that follows you and you like them, but the main character IS you and bonding with yourself .... well that sounds naughty.

I get this a lot with my Neverwinter Nights characters (Only community modules though, the stock campaigns suck), in both games.

I bond with myself all the time. Its perfectly natural and lets face it...
I've got nothing better to do.

I start feeling a bond with my first WoW caracther, a Human Retribution Paladin named Zenius. But to fight that I created more eight caracthers one of each other classes and other races (both alliance and horde). This was way before death knights.

Whenever I fully deck out a character in an RPG and make him into the character I want him to be, with his own mannerisms or quirks then typically I find myself liking him.

I also got quite attached to my multiplayer character in Halo 3 as you should be able to plainly see by looking at my avatar.

My first WoW character was an undead rouge by the name of Oneofdark. First 24 hours I played I got him to lvl 15 and then my friend deleted him because it was on his account and he didn't want it "wasting space". It was on a realm he never played. He just did it to be a dick.

I sort of bonded with my Halo 3 multi-player character as well but not as much as my Diablo II characters or most other RPG. I just saw him as a nameless spartan ready for ass kickery.

...Same.

Also, for some reason I've always felt very bonded to Link in the Zelda games, as well as the protagonists of the Chrono games.

Yeah I had a bit of a bond in Neverwinter Nights 2. Usually my bond is with the more mechanical side of things. Hear me out before you get creeped. It is because I usually have the thing sculpted to my ideal outfit (custom gear perfectly suited to my gameplay style) and a colourscheme and other aesthetic elements molded to my tastes too. It is the ultimate vessel for my fighting and I will never make a better one in that game so I get a little attached to it.

Vyrall was the name of my Shepard. Oh god I would marry that woman if I could but I'll refrain from the creepy. Otherwise I always went kinda bat shit crazy when Fawkes was getting too beat up in Fallout 3. Keep your hands off my super mutant buddy!

Yeah, actually in most games. I'm very easily immersed in a game. One that really stands out for me is Alice from Army of Two. She reminded me so much of a female me that when she got
kidnapped, although this really might not be a spoiler because the game is so old but I like the little spoiler box so whatever.
I went out of my way to kill everything.

I do the same thing in Too Human. Its not so much the character but the appearance and actions of the character. I can't really get into the character if they look like a mass of ass. No matter how awesome they are.

Same with Jericho and I. I'd go raiding with him all the time. Usually he was ran in gunning and I was a backup sniper.

I tend to go to crazy lengths to save characters I like in games. I really bonded with most of my characters in Mass Effect.

Pretty much most of the characters in games I play, especially in RPGs like Fallout 3 and Mass Effect.

Though I tend to bond better with side characters than the main ones.

I have the opposite experience. The act of making my own character removes any sense of independent personality from the character, and just makes him a shell for me to run through the game. I have bonded with characters, but ones with... Personality. The characters I end up caring about are ones (like in the Final Fantasy series, or Persona) who have their own internal conflicts, their own struggles, and backstories, and sense of right and wrong. Characters who I can see as real people, rather than just a series of stats.
