I think Agent 47's character design is quite good as well. There's just something about that look that screams "Professional." And too often, people focus on the "Killer" part of "Professional Killer" and forget about the "Professional" bit.

"Game of the year" editions are now the name for the packaging up of the original game and DLCs, so referring to special and collector's edition still as "game of the year" editions is not really accurate...

Wait, Darksiders and Bayonetta came with special editions? What made them special enough to warrant that? I can understand sequels to very popular games (Bioshock, Halo, Starcraft, Warcraft, Diablo), or to games that genuinely come from somewhere (Dante's Inferno). But didn't Darksiders and Bayonetta come straight out of a designers asshole? The figurines are probably just as mass produced as the games' concepts.

On the one hand, I like Limited Editions, because I'm the kind of music geek who likes video game soundtracks. On the other hand, I gave up collecting figurines soon after puberty and don't really have the space to display them.

Having a "special edition" of a game pre-release is like my personal pet peeve: calling a film a "cult classic" when it's been out for less than 2 weeks.

I got the little Sonic figurine from Sonic '06 off e-bay for ten bucks. I am a thousand times more satisfied with that purchase than the actual game. That wasn't a special edition thing though, only a pre-order incentive. I guess I am just a weirdo who likes collecting figures and stuff, but only from things I like.

Mario is actually a pretty good character design. Back in 1981, the mustache was added to give him a mouth, the hat to avoid animating the hair and the overalls were included so the movement of the arms were more noticeable. So, maybe its not a great design by today standards, but certainly an clever way to work around the limitations of creating a character with big pixels and 16 colors...

Hmmm. I never really saw the apeal in all the collector dolls. Partly cos, you know. You own the game. You can see them when you turn it on and partly because they're dolls. And not just any old doll, these are non-playable dolls. I always envision barbie when I look at one. Except you can't play with it, you look at it.

On an off note. Wonder if Yahtzee would do mass effect 2? He did rag out the old one.

I personally don't see the point of figurines. I don't play with them, but look at them?

A Bayonetta figuring would be cool. An elegent beautiful woman in a little toy form would be cool.

Unfortunately, she would be considered a "sex figurine", if there was ever such a thing. A woman can't be beautiful without being sexy. Shame.

I wonder if this means that the next Zero Punctuation is going to be Dark Void. Maybe he needs more time to evaluate Mass Effect 2.

To quote Yahtzee himself: "If you're complaining about unnecessary additions, you're just being a tosser. Like, say, for example, complaining about a perfectly good hot dog just because the vendor is the Boston Strangler."

All of these games do have their regular addition, so why complain about the shiny extras in the limited/ultra/whatever editions? If the devs and publishers manage to rake in more cash via shrewd marketing like this, I say more power to them.
Anyway, I'm not a big fan of the figurines myself, but if there's an artbook, a soundtrack and maybe even some extra in-game content, you won't hear me complaining.

I'm sure this was covered on twitter, which I don't use, but how does Yahtzee feel about the main character from one of his favourite series? Gordon Freeman isn't really shown off as much as most characters, so maybe his looks aren't important. I'd say he's still pretty well designed though; he looks pretty much like an intellectual (tidiness of hair, glasses) normal guy. In a hazard suit. I would say that's a pretty good depiction of who Freeman is.

Of course, knowing "who freeman is" isn't really possible. Mostly I'm basing it on his looks, so yeah I imagine they would reflect it...

I bought the Director's edition of F.E.A.R., it came with some fairly basic "special edition" stuff: slightly different skin for multiplayer (available now for free but whatever, so is the entire multiplayer game), a special rooster teeth video, and a cheesy live action excerpt from alma's childhood. And a sweet looking box. All stuff that was cool to experience at the time and didn't clutter my desk. I want more rooster teeth videos on "Special Editions"

Oh yeah, and it had a dark horse comic book. But that didn't really clutter my desk...

I Don't see anybody ranting about buying A premium Xbox (with the hard disk) opposed to an arcade one (without hard disk) I know it's not the best of comparisons but still
Because it has more storage space than a lowly card.
That's not what I was referring to but ok
Well, that's because you picked a poor example. There's a real, practical reason to buy a premium console and the hard disk is an actual, practical consideration. Limited edition swag, on the other hand, is not. Especially if said edition costs too much more than the base game, at which point you're probably getting ripped off by the cheaply produced, overpriced extras.

See, I understand and support CE/LE's for big name, highly anticipated titles like World of Warcraft (and I'm sure Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 will have CEs as well), Bioshock & BS2, and even FO3- You get some really cool stuff that, if you are an enthusiast of the title, you probably want.

But it created a monster in the marketing department: Publishers were like "Holy shit! We can really add a couple of crappily made things that we were using for freebie promo materials, toss them in a box and then upcharge by 200%?!? We were just gonna throw that leftover shit out anyway!"

But TBH, if it's have too many games publishing CEs than have no games publishing them, I'd rather have more choices than less. I can control myself and not pay stupid amounts of money for shit I'm really not interested in.

And YAHTZEE, when speaking of iconic character designs, how can you leave out Gordon Freeman, FFS?!? Goatee, Glasses, Crowbar are all you need to know. Well, maybe 'Hazard Suit', if the target audience is particularly dense. But I doubt very seriously you could find another video game character so identifiable as Freeman, even by people unfamiliar with the game.
