This might be completely off-topic-ish, kinda...maybe?
I watch Big Brother and early on I decided the people I would want to win. The people I liked the most or thought I did, and as the season went on, I started to dislike many of the people I originally liked and started to like other housemates as I got to know them all more.
It's interesting because they are real people, although you can look at them like characters.
Other then that, you can have hundreds of examples for something like this.
Like in Skyrim for example, when I first played the game I went with Ralof and the Stormcloaks, instead of Hadvar and Imperials on the sole reason that I was a prisoner and they were going to kill me.
The second time I looked at it from a "it really was a complete accident I was on the chopping block" and sided with the Imperials and went with Hadvar. Not only did I like Hadvar MUCH more then Ralof, since Ralof came off more as a stupid barbarion, but the Imperials made more sense. Ulfric Stormcloak really was a blood thirsty racist leader.
I mean even right off the bat, Ralof's first thought when he sees the imperials in the keep is to kill them, Hadvar see's the sitaution we are in and he decideds to try to reason with the Stormcloaks to work together against the fucking dragon killing everyone. Really changes the game.
