They seem to be immune to any criticism yet i find a number of them to be pointless and their aims in general only detrimental in the long run to the world as a whole, but there is a certain stigma attached to bad-mouthing anything like that.
That said however there are of course a lot of charities that are of immense help to many and i often donate.

Anyone had similar thoughts?

I don't enjoy donating money so much when it comes to charities. What I do instead is donate plasma/platelets every two weeks to the Red Cross Blood Service, as then I at least know what I'm doing is important and going to be used, rather than my money going to pay someones salary or not going to where it is needed most.

I recently found out that 25-35%+ of all money donated to charity is used soley for fund raising (but theres no law setting a maximum so it could run even higher) and then upto about 20% can be used for admin costs. So for any one any charity at most only a half goes to where it says.

Hence why I don't like donating money to them, I'd rather donate a badly needed service like platelets for cancer patients undergoing chemo than money where I'm not sure if it's going to be used or not. I remember one of my lecturers at uni laughing because he used to work for a heart charity doing research, but he said the team used to go out and play soccer because it came under the label of 'doing something for the heart' and about how they used to sit around joking that they weren't going to cure anything and the money was a waste of time. That kind of puts you off donating slightly.

As with all things, some are good, some are bad. You can't blanket all of them in one light, and you should definitely research rather than just blindly handing out money. However, I know/have worked with several charities that do very good and very important work. Many local-level charities are more hands-on than big, corporate-style affairs. I've worked closely with a couple of womens' shelters, and these people are flat-out amazing. The things they do for battered/abused women and families is just astounding...from getting them out of dangerous situations to helping them with school/jobs so they can move towards independence. And most are fairly low-key as far as fundraising. They usually don't advertise themselves, but rather rely on word-of-mouth and the kindness of donors.

I'm also a strong supporter of several disease-based charities. Again, you need to make sure your money is going to the right place (i.e. hospitals) and not some CEO's bank account. But I've lose a few members of my family to currently incurable diseases like AIDS. We also have a family history of lupus (which I myself have to be repeatedly checked for, as symptoms can arise over time). Awareness should definitely be spread, and hopefully cures created.

I'm fine with charities so long as they do expect ME to donate. I have better things to do with my money. I may be an awful person for saying that but so be it.

I donate very rarely. I don't really enjoy doing it. I don't know where my money goes, or if it even helps anyone. It doesn't seem like that money will cure AIDS or anything.

I donate to the Salvation Army, Red Cross and World Vision, because i see the good work that they do (particularly the Salvos and Red Cross). I'm a little more hesitant with other charities, but will usually donate to large medical charities.
