Cheating in games

I don't think there are cheats for nexgen games, or at least I have never seen or heard of them. I was wondering about the old systems, like ps1, ps2, xbox, pc or whatever. Have any of you guys ever used like gameshark or cheat codes?

The only time I have ever cheated is on rpgs to get more money. I am a player who buys at least one of everything no matter how expensive and would keeping doing random battles until I had the money. If anyone has played star ocean till the end of time, there is one point early in the game where you can get your characters some really powerful weapons for a ridiculous amount of money. I did random battles for 32 hours to get them. As sad as that sounds if you keep playing for 2 more hours you can get weapons twice as powerful for a fraction of the price. After that I decided to use the max money cheat for any rpg I play.

I cheat for extra damage. I just hate really durble enemies. Occasionally I'll have crazy physics or something fun like that on.

I used to often play through the game properly, then turn on cheats for the laughs.

I liked the cheat system in goldeneye, you had to earn them by completing certain levels within a certain time limit on a certain difficulty. I remember spending ages trying to get invisibility, you had to complete the Archives level on 00 Agent (hardest difficulty) in 1 minute and 20 seconds. I got it after much practice and controller slamming.

I did back in the day when a lot of games really weren't about letting you get through and see the end without a great deal of effort. Also I did it for a lot of JRPGs, I didn't have a ton of time to just grind out levels, I just wanted to get through the story.
I rarely use cheats now a days, the few times I do use them is after I finish a game just to see somethings I missed or w/e. For example I finished Mass Effect 1, and I wanted to go into Mass Effect 2 but I didn't really feel like replaying the game just to have increase my extra skill so I just auto put in the stats through cheats.

personally i hate cheaters in multiplayer, if you can't manage it through skill, then why fake it, what's the point. I admit there are a few games I've given myself an advantage at, but only singkle player, never anything which would affect a multiplayer game, as multiplayer should be about skill

Any game that uses PunkBuster still tends to have a lot of cheaters. But if you mean built-in, harmless cheats, I sometimes see them as end-game rewards.
I've also cheated for some parts of games I don't consider to be a valid challenge. For instance, the weight limit in STALKER doesn't really exist for any especially valid reason, and it's more fun to be able to carry whatever you pick up, Gordon Freeman style.

I loved that, cheats were so much more satisfying to get than achievements nowadays; so much more tangible...
Perfect dark had the psychosis gun to work for, and the cloak cheat was literally impossible to achieve without an exploit. (finish the level in 2 minutes, there's a defense stage in the level that lasts 2 minutes, so it was clearly a sort of meta puzzle to crack.)

Looking at some of the mods for the game, I wouldn't download the ones that give you all the equipment at the start, but weight limit I could see being tweaked.

Lots of more current games have cheats; GTA4, Saints row 1 & 2, even Oblivion and Fallout 3 have them. Actually now taht I look at the list it seems only sandbox games may have them, but they are still out there.

I would only cheat in single player games after playing through first or if I had gotten bored with the game and wanted to spice it up somehow. As for multiplayer I hacked once I will admit, but that was when I was young and foolish. Now I never hack in multiplayer and play all legit.

I only cheat for bonuses or things that make the game more fun.
God mode and unlimited money don't make the game more fun...
Low gravity, wacky weapons, and nudity make games more fun...

I don't know about consoles, but as a primarily pc gamer, i basically assume everyone is cheating. it's just too widespread to do otherwise. I used to like the, pre-steam, half-life/counterstrike updates as it meant 3 or 4 days free of hacks and cheaters.

my major question would be why do they do it! Why do people see the need to win at all costs, to essentially be a spectator to bots racking up kills for them, rather than actually playing the game? why bother?

I messed with the gravity settings in Darkest of Days, got stuck out of the map to see the skybox. It was quite interesting. There were a few cars on a highway in the middle of no-where (real cars, in a picture. The skybox was taken from a camera I guess). It was pretty intriguing.

But no, I don't cheat in games for extra stuff unless the game has wronged me and taken them away (corrupted save games *sadface*).

Obviously cheating is always bad in Multiplayer games but I find there's a lot of hate in the gaming community towards people who cheat even just in Singleplayer games. This annoys the hell out of me, I wish people would just let others enjoy games in any way they like! But I suppose I shouldn't be surprised as most of the gaming community just hate everything and everyone.

Personally I don't cheat in games unless A) the game is mediocre and I just want to turn on god-mode and rush to the end for a sense of closure, or B) I've finished the game before and want to play through it again to mess around with cheats.

For example I didn't think Resident Evil 5 was a very good game, but recently (about 6 months after my first play-through) I played it again with a Trainer in the background giving me infinite health and kick-ass weapons and other upgrades, just for shits and giggles, and it made it fun for a while before the novelty wore off.

Anybody else miss 'big head mode' in games?

Tell me with a straight face it wouldn't be hilarious to play C.O.D. Online multiplayer while everyone has a huge head.
