Why won't games let us cheat anymore?
Gta: San andreas had amazing codes that made the gameplay hilarious.
Most games won't let you do this anymore, with one of the few exceptions being saints row 2.

Am I the only person who loved using cheat codes to warp the gameplay?

Well some games have a really good cheat/command system. Like oblivion. Affter ive beaten it, i just played with the console, spawning strongest fighters and monsters, and making them fight each other.

I'd love to be able to play with things like that,
but my pc is barely able to run morrowind,
but it was fun to play with the console on that.

Yes exactly, what happened to good cheats? Many of todays games would be so much better with cheats such as being able to spawn enemies, low gravity, super punches etc... and of course the standard god mode, infinite ammo and all weapons.

That's why Bethesda are excellent, I think they gave out the console codes originally and they've been published everywhere else now.

i generally don't cheat but there have been some great cheats, like in GoldenEye, that had a lot of cheats. i had an Action Replay card and could get mini tanks in most levels. so much fun driving up so someone at ankle level then running them over and getting that awesome squelching noise.

Huh... I hadn't really realized that until today but no... 'cheats' nowadays are generally just Easter eggs and the like. I sincerely hope that this isn't the beginning of a movement towards charging us for these via micro payments!

I love nothing better than cheating the hell out of a game after I've completed it. I especially love it when the game gives you the option to unlock cheats with codes/achievements (like goldeneye64). cheats add extra lifetime to a game and allow you to do hilarious glitchy things!

Saints Row 2 is an excellent example of a good cheating game hours of Co-Op fun with crazy cheats. Seriously put on Low Gravity and do one of the mini games based on Tony Hawks project bone breaking system you have about 6 minutes of bouncing around amidst sky scrapers.

Programmers used cheats to find bugs and glitches during development. They would use the full Health or level skip cheats to find a glitch. Removing a cheat would have caused more problems so they had to be left in.
These days it doesn't appear to be an issue so there are no need for cheats.
Shame.
Mind you, Capcom were always swine's for not letting you cheat.

I'm not too sure on that point. There was the ability to simplify button combinations on SuperSF2:TR for the GBA (just press select and it lasts until you reset the game). There was also the Compression Codes and Tickets in the Megaman Battle Network Series, and the Wave Command Codes in Megaman Starforce 2.

As it seems that developers never really test their games anymore they dont necesarily need cheats to play around with things.

This is exactly what's wrong with modern games - no silly cheats to mess around with! I want to play Gears of War and chainsaw people with a giant lollipop.

You can still cheat in GTA IV.
yeah but most people want the achievments
and besides, the cheats aren't as good as they used to be,
IE in san andreas and the other gta games you could get jetpacks and super-punch and change the way people acted and more.
In gta4 you can only get health ammo and vehicles

One of the main reasons has to be the rise in multi player only games so one person cheating would smeg up the entire game, but yeah Morrowind best...console...ever

Kind of depends on the game, doesn't it? I recall quite a few of the games back in the day lacking cheats, while some games still give us that. Granted, the option to eviscerate your enemies with giant lollipops isn't as common as it used to be, our cheats are still there, but with this newfangled "achievements" thing, people tend to use them less.
