So today I will be reviewing Chex Quest.

I am serious.

"I'm from Chex squadron, and I volunteer!"

Chex Quest was a total conversion of Ultimate Doom that was packaged in with Chex cereal, as there was usually a toy of some kind in cereal boxes back in the day.

Chex Quest followed the story of the brave Chex Warrior, the only one brave enough to go to the planet Bazoik and fight off the invading Flemoids, eventually working his way down to their lair to exterminate them once and for all! After a brief 3D cutscene, you are thrust into the first level. You exit your ship, ready for anything, armed only with your basic Pistol Zorcher.

The game was very short, featuring only five different levels: the Landing Site, Storage, Labs, Arboretum, and finally the dreaded Caverns of Bazoik. These all featured distinct environments, fitting their namesake. Because there were only 5 levels, the environments never got repetitive. This was mainly because you only ever spent 15 or so minutes in each one.

The enemies were the horrid Flemoids, a race made of... well, Phlegm. There were only 4 types of Flemoidius: Commonus, which would simply melee you with his nose-slime. Bipedicus, who could launch goo-projectiles with deadly accuracy, and sometimes came with armor. There was the Cycloptis, a fast, burly Flemoid who would charge you down and goo you good, and one last type, said to be horrendous to lay eyes upon!

It's the horrible Flembrane! Whatever is behind it must be very important!

The game plays exactly like Ultimate Doom, which really isn't a bad thing. The only issue is that I am not aware of any way to play it without an MS-DOS emulator. The game is... well it's quite a remarkable ad campaign, and I loved it.

A Flemoidus Bipedicus smashing you in the Arboretum. Let's hope that Cyclopticus in the other room doesn't come over!

All in all, I really enjoyed the game. It was the first real shooter I ever played, and it's hour long campaign whisked me away to planets unknown, and was the reason I am into gaming today. I'm sure it's still available on the internet somewhere. I still have the original disk, and stick it now and again when I'm feeling nostalgic. I recommend it to anyone who has a free hour, nothing else to do, and loves Chex.
