I always plays as a girl first. Always. Playing with a male Shep in Mass Effect hurts my ears as I think the voice actor sounds like he's literally just reading lines off a page. But yeah, I play as the girls in fighting games too.

One of my all time favorite female characters (who isn't known to many people) is Kasami from Suikoden and Suikoden II.

I like characters in general, with female ones being some of my favorites.While I mostly play as guys, I am more then happy to play female ones, especially in fighting games as they sometimes are easier for noobs to learn the ropes. Not to say all female characters are this way, but there is bound to be an easy character in the female perswation then the male.

In general, if a character is good they are good, and so is the reverse, gender not withstanding

It depends on the game really. When it's an RPG where you can make your character write the story so to speak, I prefer a female character because for one they're nice to look at (yes I'm shallow) and for two I can relate to them easier.

Then again, in a game like Prototype I have no trouble playing as the guy.

... Bayonetta is an exception though, if only because of the fact that she is yet another sex object designed to sell a decent game - And she actually managed to!

As long as the game charakter is well made, it doesn't really make much of a difference for me.
And I don't really feel less manly using a female charakter. In Mass Effect I use the female charakter (but mostly because the male voice acting is really bad). But in street fighters I mostly use males because I like them more.

I love video game girls. I think a game with a female lead is exponentially more interesting than a game with a male lead. There is just something so awesome about a girl who can kick ass. That being said, I don't like female mages. They're so cliche and boring to me. A female healer...riveting. Aeris was ok, though. Sorry, now I'm just rambling. Anyway, the point is, I love video game girls. My personal favorites are Cammy, Psylocke, Jill Valentine, Lara Croft, Felicia, Rikku, Princess Ashe, C. Viper, Kitana, and Tali.

No, with RPGs however I feel less able to relate to them and immerse myself in the game so... Not my thing.

*Deadpan* Yes, I feel horribly emasculated whenever I play a female character. :|

The only reason I prefer male leads over female is because I project myself onto whatever character I'm playing. If they're female, then it's hard for me to do that, lol. I do occasionally make female characters in games that allow you to pick gender (like Dynasty Warriors) and I have a pool of female characters that I choose from. Now in Street Fighter, I originally chose Ken because he had a green fireball, and because my brother chose Ryu. Now I just like him.

If you have SFIV, whenever my PS3 gets fixed, we can have a match online.

Actually, pretty much this. I'll usually play a male character (especially in RPGs), but I'm not against playing a female. Especially if its a fighting game and I like the moveset. Like Taki or Tira or Setsuka or Amy or Ivy or ... what? I play some male characters too. It just usually happens that the female characters have the faster attack styles (which I usually like).

Yeah they're usually the nimble characters, like how Chun Li can jump kick off walls and stuff. So when I want speed, I usually pick a female character.

I personally do not play Female characters in games, not because of any sexism but because I am not female. When I am playing a game, my character within that game is an extension of myself and as such generally resembles me as closely as I can achieve with the tools provided.

Not even going to lie here, I think about 90% of my non-adventuring time in Fable II was spent trying to chat up the monks at the Temple of Light. Oh your character information box says no but your robes say YES.
