So apparantely, the recent 8.8 earthquake in Chile has caused the Earth's axis to shift slightly, thus shortening our days my a few milliseconds, a NASA expert says.

Here's the original story:

Maybe those Mayans were right....

Anyway, what does everyone think of this?

Personally, I don't get the big deal. Sure it sounds freaky, but its just a couple of milliseconds. No big deal, this happens all the time, I figured this would just make for interesting discussion.

Perfectly normal. This happens all the time with major earthquakes.

For those unaware of the connection between changes in earth's crust, it's axis and the rotational speed of earth, I can see why this might be somewhat surprising.

Big deal? It's gonna give a big headache to the guys timing the atomic clocks, but it won't effect the rest of us.

Shortened our days hu...

DEAR GOD! That means that I have to go to bed right now! Otherwise I will oversleep by a few milliseconds!

Everyone, panic!

Great, now I need to get up a few Milliseconds Earlier every morning

That's just great!

And the Mayans are not doom-tellers because they made a Calender and decided they didn't want to make it go to 30XX

Wow! I didn't even know it was possible for an earthquake to shift Earth's axis. Makes sense after having read the article, but it still seems amazing to me. Another reminder that the forces of nature can still be way more powerful than anything humans can do.

Though I feel somewhat guilty for being amazed by something that was a horrific tragedy for many people.

EDIT: Er, what is everyone's problem in this thread? A bunch of you are acting like people are freaking out over this.

Oh please don't bring up the Mayans. I'm surprised there hasn't been a mass riot in a major city with some guy preaching about the end of days. This type of global atmosphere is just right for the crazies to run around.

Why would it? Those are based upon the oscillating vibrational speed of specific atoms. One day now simply lasts a few vibrations less. The clocks themselves still measure time as accurately.

That is so weird. The dam in china lengthened the days by a few milliseconds, and an earth quake sheds it off.

Well, that'll compensate for the next million or so years in which the Earth's rotation will gradually get slower by a few milliseconds.

i know it isnt changed by much but the fact it HAS changed just by an earth quake is like grats to that earth quake in its epicness :D

I heard that new dam China just built will actually lengthen our days by a few milliseconds, so its all good.

EDIT: Fucking Ninjas!

Not that I am worried I am gonna point out that if earth was 6 ft closer to the sun, we would all be vaporised by the heat wave unless we moved underground and most surface life would die - research that if you dont believe me whole article in new scientist about it.
