What is it with Asian countries and hating each other so much? They're getting to be almost as bad as differing religious sects that will murder each other at the drop of a hat.
Because America has been known for being a peace loving country that trusts its fellow Europeans and Canadians and Mexicans, and Russians, and- oh wait.
Wait, why are you talking about America all of a sudden?
Well, because, uhhh.

.....

Fuck, your right.

It's all in the link. The cardboard sign says "CAR SMASHINGS AHEAD, JAPANESE CAR OWNERS SHOULD TURN BACK NOW", while the store sign reads "pattad firmly defends China's right to the Diaoyu Islands. / We will give a 15% discount to customers who yell THE DIAOYU ISLANDS BELONG TO CHINA! in the store / We will give a 20% discount to customers who yell JAPAN ALSO BELONGS TO CHINA!"

They've committed one of the classic blunders: Never get involved in a land war in Asia.

Ok, there's no way that all of this is just a considence, there has to be a connection between this and what's going on in the middle east, and I doubt that a movie did all of it.

Aside from the resources that can be gained from owning these islands (gas deposits and oil, I believe), the biggest motivation for this conflict is "face"... a concept many in the West have difficulty understanding.
Not really we've had wars with heavy routes in similar concepts to face, how it looks etc throughout our histories here in Europe. They are bubbling near the surface. Governments often continue with policies they know aren't working to avoid losing face.

We like to think we're better than this but the idea of going to war mainly to save face is still a real possibility here.

I wonder if you've had that moment, where you realize that everyone here knows what's going on, except you...<.<

Why? The reasons for rioting are mostly different.

The Chinese rioting are due to foreign encroachment onto what they feel is their territory by a hated enemy.

The Arabian and Persian Riots are mostly about their ow governments actions against them. (with a side show of being pissed off with a movie)

Quite... the riots are due to the fact that the Japanese made the purchase of formerly Chinese Islands, from a private company I believe... as petty as that sounds... But the Chinese really hate the Japanese...<.<

I dunno, I guess I just don't like to think that so much is happening at the same time just out of coincidence, but then again I'm really not that well informed on the subject so maybe I should just shut up.

Well, guess we all have that moment where we feel like idiots. Still, this is getting a little depressing, having riots in the middle east and China at the same time. We really live in a hateful world don't we?

Tell that to the Tibetans who they invaded in 1956, the Indians who they attacked in 1962, the Russians who they attacked in 1969 and the Vietnamese who they attacked in 1979.

to the Chinese Tibet is part of China. it only existed as an independent state for 30 years of its entire history. "old maps" as i said before.

the rest were cold war border conflicts that resulted in next to no territorial change and directly led to the Sino-Soviet split and China becoming a US ally in the cold war. if you want to frame those as Chinese "imperialist" aggression you simply are making a mockery of far more complicated history involved.

and by my "logic" nothing. my or your supposed "logic" and your desire for the world to adhere to it while throwing around false equivalences doesn't shape the world. but the Chinese Confuciust view of China does shape their world and maybe just maybe you should find out what the hell that is before you go trying to label them the next overly simplistic "big bad" on the world stage simply because for your own world view to work you've got to have one.

this ? this a an argument about a rock in the sea akin to multitudes of others some of which almost certainly involve your own country ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_territorial_disputes ) and as such it doesn't particularly mark China down as anything.
Just how long did Poland exist as independent country before the Germans invaded? Tibet has been part of China for periods of history, first coming into Chinese control under the Mongols and has come and gone since with the strength of the ruling dynasties. Much like Poland has appeared and disappeared in the same time period. China since WW2 has consistently used armed force in backing its view of the borders, in the process killing 10000s of poeple and attempting to destroy any non Chinese culture within its selfdefined borders. 90% of countries in the world can make convincing historical claims to control of parts or even entire other countries, why is it acceptable for China to used armed force on its claims but not Mexico to invade the US to reclaim the southern half of the US?
The example of Mexico vs. U.S. is probably a poor example considering we did win the territories after a war and forcing Mexico to sign a document legitimizing the U.S.'s ownership of that land.

There's nothing wrong with Mexico invading the U.S. to reclaim the same territories...if Mexico is willing to become the 51st state of the United States after it surrenders.
Guess what the land that China claims to theirs and has used forced to occupy in India and Russia where both lost after wars and treaties, China feels it can rip those treaties because it historically part of China.

Everything is possible in international relations, but far less is expected.

China won't go to war over some pathetic rocks in the sea, oil/natural gas in the vicinity notwithstanding. The backlash in international relations would be too great, especially since all the other great powers will most likely side with Japan. And how would they actually fight the war? It's not like you can have a proper stand-off on those pesky rocks...

Well with world populations expanding past the 6 billion mark, and half that in china, with rumors that middle east oil reserves are tapping out, with china needing massive amounts of oil to fuel its economy and 3 billionish people. Maybe these little islands that may have oil and etc under them are far more strategically important than may appear at first glance.

I find it rather laughable that china makes a claim now however in light that these islands have a real value, but people want to say it is all over "face," yea this will end well with a new chinese leader coming in because the only thing he can do is lose more face if japan will not budge, america backing japan, and i doubt anyone will give china's claim any heed at all period, since they never thought to bring this all up to just this moment. so how exactly is he going to gain face out of it? goto war? expect the whole of japan to roll over and kiss his ass?

China is a bad guy period. Its about time the world starts treating it like one instead of trying to placate them at every turn.

I'm not going to deny that we are good at hating or that we do it a lot, but I like to remember that there's more to us than that. Saying that we're all about hate and violence is focusing solely on our negative aspects, there are good parts of Humanity too, no matter what some people might say. Millions are donated to charities every year, countless people volunteer themselves, and then there's just the everyday kindness that we receive from friends and family...I'm rambling now. I...catch you later, I need to go start another thread.

Oh, simple. They'd just fight it on Japanese soil.
The only reason why Japan is even in the position to play this game is their defense treaty with the US.
