I'd post a link to the huffington post article but it has a graphic picture and I don't feel like being banned. Here is the story though

"Doctors in Shenzhen, China have reattached a 6-year-old boy's penis after his father bit it off, the Shanghai Daily reports.
According to the paper, witnesses said the 32-year-old father was walking with his naked son and 4-year-old daughter on the street Thursday when he commanded the boy to bite his penis.
When the boy refused, the man attacked him.
Horrified passersby subdued the man, forced him to spit out his son's penis, and called the police, China Buzz reports.
The boy's reattachment surgery was successful, but it is too early to tell whether he will have normal use of the appendage. The Shanghai Daily reports that relatives will care for the boy's sister.
Cops say the father is likely to have a mental illness -- he was recently seen pretending to strangle his son on their balcony, according to witnesses. Police also found that the man, who was only identified by the surname Yu, was severely in debt after a failed business venture and was often seen gambling."

I love how they say "likely to have a mental illness". I'm not a psychiatrist and I can diagnose him as being mentally messed up.
....what? Christ Chinese society can really come off as messed up at times.
How is one person doing something a societal issue?
It has to do with how China manages their mentally ill. Here [http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/11/world/asia/11psych.html?pagewanted=all] is a link for more information on how mental illness is treated in China.

jeez Volf, I understand you hate the Chinese, but what?
nope, I don't hate Chinese society or people. There are plenty of aspects of Chinese society that I respect(like their philosophies, art, and respect for the elderly), but in addition to how they treat Tibet, I don't appreciate how China "deals" with the mentally ill [http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/11/world/asia/11psych.html?pagewanted=all], it reminds me of how the Japanese treat their mentally ill [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q7iS4XLD14](which is like how the West treated the mentally ill in the past).
You know most of China is pretty much like a third world country, right? They've only been modernizing for about 30 years.

And in any case, the article isn't even about mental illnesses, and it doesn't state that he was neglected mental care before the incident (I don't think you get shoved into a mental institution in the states for pretending to strangle your son either). It really seems like you're just grasping at opportunities to throw flak at China, the way some people comment "just another reason Americans are stupid" after every article about some American doing something stupid (at least they don't spin it by saying they meant to highlight problems in the American education system when confronted!). :/

I realize that not all of China is fully up to modern times, it doesn't excuse how the mentally ill are treated.

No, this article mentioned a mentally ill man, and it stated that this man had a history of "odd" behavior. The kind of behavior that at least would get people to ask, "are you ok?".

The article specifically says that China is behind the times in their treatment.
It has been nearly 35 years since the end of the Cultural Revolution, when mental illness was declared a bourgeois self-delusion and the sick were treated with readings from Chairman Mao. Psychiatric treatment has returned. But mental health remains a medical backwater, desperately short of financing, practitioners and esteem.

Not that article. The OP article. It's not about mental illnesses. It doesn't even say the man had a history of odd behavior, and even if it did, so do plenty of kids who shoot up schools in the US.

A blanket insult towards China for having backwards policies to mental illness victims is simply not a relevant response, and frankly, if you actually were trying to highlight that issue, you wouldn't have only said "Chinese society can come across as really messed up at times."

The only thing you bolded that was slightly relevant to possibly having a history of a mental illness was the part about "pretending to strangle his son," which I addressed earlier. The rest of it was the event in itself. You can't count that as having a HISTORY of mental illness.

"You should've known he had problems!"
"How?"
"He just shot up an office full of people!"
"But he did that just now...."

The point about kids who shoot up schools is that
1. It's hard to pinpoint who has mental illnesses and who doesn't
2. You don't call out a country specifically for a problem that exists EVERYWHERE.

I think I've made my point abundantly clear, though I was pretty sure it was clear in the last post too...

I realize it exist everywhere, which is why all countries should take step to provide proper treatment for the mentally ill, the CCP is not one of those countries.

Yes it is hard to tell who has a mental illness, but for some people they give off signs(like pretending to strangle their children and having their children walking around town naked).

If you prefer, I guess I could rephrase by saying it appears that this isn't the first time that the man showed signs of putting his children in danger, and calling in to question his mental health.

If I'm not mistaken, the CCP just isn't really big on spending money on stuff other than infrastructure and investment. It's not relevant to the article anyway.

Pretending to strangle your kid isn't a sign of mental illness. I'm sorry, but I've pretended to strangle my brother, and he's pretended to strangle me, and I don't consider either of us to be crazy. As for walking kids around naked, I'm honestly really not sure what to make of it. The article addresses it so nonchalantly that I'm not sure if it was a not-very-public place, or if it was reasonably common in that region, or if people just didn't know how to react to it.

Anyways, even if he was a little weird, there's clearly not enough to say that he should've been treated before the incident. And a general attack on Chinese society isn't warranted in either case.

-_- The article specifically said that the attack on the son was attributed to the fathers mental illness and that this isn't the first time that the father had shown signs of "unusual" behavior.

It is a sign that the father might have something wrong with him. Also, there was a witness to the father pretending to strangle his son, and there was no mention that it was done in a joking matter. Furthermore, if it was nothing but a silly joke, why would the author bring it up? It seems odd to bring up such a thing if its not relevant to the story about a father's behavior and attack of his son.

I mean, it could be a matter of failure in the private sector, because psychiatry isn't profitable. All governments are constantly struggling to determine what their responsibilities to society are. Of course, the CCP is a particularly shitty government, but this particular problem isn't unique.

A bunch of cops said he might be crazy, which isn't saying much. And the previous signs were insignificant at best. He wasn't going around trying to bite people's dicks off in the past. It's like if after a shooting, a journalist will write "the kid's classmates always described him as reserved and quiet."

I'm not really sure how you can pretend to strangle someone in a non-joking way. But even if he did, it's not really anything that would lead to someone forcing you to seek help, in any country.

The weird thing is, they bring it up in a totally nonchalant way. But anyways, I'm sure in a lot of places in the US and any first world country in general that I could get away with walking a kid around naked long enough to bite his dick off (not that I'd like to put that to the test, for a number of reasons).

I fumbled when I originally read the title on the main board. It took me several clicks before I actually hit the thread hyperlink.

OT: Once you realize how mentally fucked the guy must be, it's hard to call him a monster. If this was in America, it'd be a crazy claiming the boy produces demon seed. In which case, public execution is in order.

In China, there once was a dad
Who was walking his son and got mad
The dad's mind was quite sick
so he bit off his son's dick
and said "Wow, this dick tastes real bad"

I'm sorry. I'm off to shove a vacuum cleaner nozzle up my nose in hope of sucking the bad thoughts out.

On topic.... I mean.. Yeah, thats.... Just so bad...
