Its just a nice thing to do, I like being nice to people its nice being nice..
Besides I always to try to be nice to everyone not just girls although I'm probably nicer to girls than men..
I think some people don't like it because its seen as 'scoring points' and thats all its for but I live in middle class England, Chivalry is not dead here and equality will not kill it..

How can I be uninformed? There are nice people, there are polite people, then there are people that call themselves chivalrous and people who complain all women hate nice guys - the latter two of which people do constantly on this forum, and from what I've seen there's a fairly large cross over between the two groups.Mr. Doe said:

And the last sentence was in part a joke, but I am bored to tears of people my age on here trying to act like they're 65.

Chivalry was a romanticized and idealized depiction of medieval knighthood by Renaissance authors who didn't know what they were talking about. Kind of like when people talk about the "good old days" while glossing over or ignoring all the bad things about them.
While it was better than treating women like livestock, treating them like delicate flowers is still a form of patronizing objectification.
Chivalry included courtly love, also known as stalking a woman who wasn't your wife (but probably someone else's), writing poems for her and charging guys on horseback for her, because of the belief that the obligation of marriage made true love impossible.
I'd rather be respectful and polite than chivalrous.

In a perfect world it would have been replaced by Equality but sdly it has not, because the world is still male orientated.

I still do it. It's how I was raised. Sad that more and more people are seeing it as an insult. Ya just can't win...
The concept might be outdated but that doens't mean people should abandon all form of common courtesy.

I'm all for women being equal to men, but that should also mean that men should be able to hit back should a women hit them unprovoked. That's just my two cents.

Kinda got to agree here. I've been trying to improve my manners a lot recently but differences in my manner towards different genders hasn't even come up yet. There's too many other dilemmas like taking your hat off indoors: it used to be standard but I don't like taking my hat off.Aethren said:

I have run into women who say, "I am perfectly capable of doing this myself," but for the most part, the reaction is, "Oh, thanks." It's sort of like saying, "Bless you," when someone sneezes. Some people appreciate it, some people hate it, and other people just don't care. But I do it anyways because that's how I was taught.

Equality can't exist, I don't think. I believe that men naturally have some protective instincts over women. And I don't know about all men, but several of the men I know, of all ages, are naturally somewhat subservient to women.
