GTA?
Half Life?
Shadow of Rome?
Harvest Moon?
Gun?
Etc...
There are plenty of games were you play the Average Joe.

Call of Duty 4? You know, one of the most popular games of this generation?
Don't forget BioShock...
Yeah, you had nothing out of the ordinary in Bioshock...

I don`t think we really got the point here. The "normal" people in Half-Life got power armour and plug into the wall for HP and the "normal" guy in Bioshock can electrocute you with his bare hands.

I see Normal as the one shot kill thing. You start the game, someone shots you in the chest with one bullet from any firearm, you die. Rinse and repeat.

Quite a few horror style games you are just a regular person in a bad situation. The latest entry would be Deadspace I suppose. Dead Rising you're just a reporter.

you should try farcry 2 on the hardest difficulty, if a sniper or anything shoots you in the head you're done.
Although that cna get very frustrating to the point I start throwing things.

If you want a non-super soldier game, try playing the STALKER games...
I've only played the first myself, but I never felt like a god/hero/super-soldier in it, it really does take your chocolate ring-piece and pull it out through your mouth...

Yeah, but it's not very interesting if you play as Mr. Farmer, who milks the cow while you could be playing as the hero of all time.
what the hel you mean by that??? i dontknow any better fun theharvest moon games. No chosen one crap, no long enduring quests with endless cut scenes and dialog after dialog. All i am saying is a game like Harvest Moon is long past due, we need more games liek that, just a calm more relax style of game, i can also name mroe games where you arentthechosen one that it still very fun

Of if you play as a chicken chaser. ("Chicken chaser? You chase chickens?")

I'm not saying you have to play as the chosen one in every single game, I only listed a reason as to why its so prevalent.

Besides, I enjoy those cutscenes and dialogue. I'm a story junkie.

Silent Hill series, in 1, 2 and 4 you play as painfully normal people in one hell of a bad situation. You suck at shooting, every battle is desperate and you're never sure if they're going to get out alive. In number 3 your heroine is pretty normal, but she has a "destiny" unfortunately for her it fucking blows.

Well that's why there are super human characters in some games, because in most situations a normal person would either die, try to fight and die, or piss there pants, scream, and run away only to die later. Besides doesn't every one want to be that guy that kills 300 zombies with nothing more then a .38, a blunt instrument, and a dog?

Wait.. what?
by average Joe do you mean 'lay siege to an entire City Joe' one man taking out entire SWAT teams and tanks, that's not very average.

Call of Cthulhu, Dark Corners of the Earth is a good one. You play the part of a private detective whose vision goes wobbly at the first sign of violence, and who needed regular shots of morphine if he so much as took a bullet if he wanted to keep going at the same pace.

SWAT4.

There are no power-ups, no ammunition or weapons to pick up, no medikits either. You start out each mission with whatever you equip youself with and that's it. If you want the gas mask, you need to forego the armored helmet. If you use the heavy body armor, your mobility is impaired.

If you get hit in an arm, your aiming falters; if you get shot in the leg, you limp and can no longer run. A well-placed shot (not necessarily a headshot) will kill you.

The game strives to be as realistic as possible which normally is a sure-fire formula for designing a bad game but with SWAT4 the formula works incredibly well.

I'd like to see a game where your the underdog or underpowered person for once and the super powered guy is your rival or enemy or something like that.
Heh, this might actually be an interesting game concept--you're the only one who knows that the so-called "chosen one" is a bastard (or incompetent) and you must go around fixing or undoing his screwups.

I'd like to see RPG's where you *aren't* for some reason the *only person* who can save the city/world/galaxy/pick one. I realize why they do it. In a game where you can play as an evil bastard it's easier if they supply a heavy-handed "you have to or it's lights out!" motivation, but they could easily appeal to the "Like I'm going to let one of you idiots do it, you'll just mess it up!" reasoning instead.

I find it much more compelling if the hero *decides* to be a hero rather than just having it dumped on him.

Yes, because it's a video game and as such doesn't adhere to the laws of reality. The protaganists in GTA are all 'blokes' who are in extraordinary situations, GTA:SA especially. Hardly Super-duper Space Marine / last of the chosen material.

I hate how in every game im the super human that can magically blow the faces off 200 enemies while in my Allys usually get 1 kill. I want a epic war game where dieing wont reset it but throws you into another solider some game where dieing is not like "aww fuck back to the checkpoint" but like a epic rush with mortars and then you die.
That game exists.
Battlefield 2 : Modern Combat.
On PS2 and I assume other consoles.
