Ok, I'm doing some shopping for some loved ones, and I need to buy a joint gift for my elder brother and his girlfriend [Practically my sister-in-law], and I can't decide what to get.

I know she likes Resident Evil [She's a thriller / survival-horror girl]
I also know that he likes Gears of War [He's an action - shoot 'em up guy]

What I don't know, is this -- Would they like Silent Hill: Homecoming? Or is there another game I can get for the both of them? [We've already got Left 4 Dead].

Heeelp? D:

The Silent Hill series is pure gold, and one of the greatest Survival/horror games I have ever played. If you're looking for more ideas I would suggest Eternal Darkness-Gamecube. But as far as pure action melded with horror goes, I cannot think of a single title that has nailed that well enough. It's hard to feel afraid when you're a burly gun-toting badass that smokes babies instead of cigarettes.

You've already got L4D? Dang, 'cause that's the perfect combination.

Do they have Dead Space yet?

If you get them Homecoming, they will hate you forever. Trust me, it's not a good idea. Get Siren(PS2) for the lady and Fallout 3 for the lad.

Oh, Bioshock was kinda creepy, yet maintained an air of gun-juggling badassery. I forgot that one.

No, I don't have Dead Space but --

My brother isn't that hardcore of a gamer. I'm looking for something that has less thinking required to it [Dead Space you have to be pretty specific because of the creatures getting back up once you've cut off a piece of them >_>] but isn't too dumbed down.

The consoles applicable, btw, are a Wii and a 360 [I'm the only one that plays the PS2, PSOne, and except for mine and my fathers, there aren't a lot of good gaming PCs in the house]

Edit: And we've got Fallout 3 already @_@
Edit2: Also, they've never played the Silent Hill series, and my brother has never played the Resident Evil series, so they're not already tainted with pre-disposition so as to not enjoy the game >_>

Honestly, even if I had never played the rest of the SH series, I dunno if I'd get into Homecoming. I would suggest picking up SH2 if anything. Probably the best in the series. And since you have a Wii I will go ahead and resubmit my first response. Eternal Darkness was a vastly overlooked gem. Also, Bioshock still sounds good for what you're lookin for.

I fail to see the problem with Dead Space. It isn't that thought heavy and it's like the best parts of Resident Evil and Gears of War combined into one game.

Metroid Prime 3 might fit the bill. Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles is a nice lightgun game, but I'm not sure whether either of them would like that sort of thing (or whether they in fact already own it).

The latest Silent Hill isn't a terrible game, but since the previous ones are some of the best horror games ever made, it's a bit of a disappointment. A horror fan (especially one that hasn't played the previous games) could potentially like it.

:: Shrug. ::

All I know from experience is pre-disposition ruins a lot of games for a lot of players >_> For example, having never listened to the hype about Fable 1, I enjoyed it immensely -- so did the rest of my family. I didn't have a bad word to say about it until people who had read the hype started telling me what was promised... @_@

Regardless, Bioshock, Dead Space [As a heavy maybe], and SH: Homecoming [For now] are on the list.

To explain a bit further... My elder brother likes... well, mindless games. Games that don't take a lot of thinking. He doesn't typically like RPGs, but he liked Oblivion and Fallout 3 because they didn't require as much micro-management and stat-watching as most RPGs do, so he isn't above thinking while playing, just not a whole lot...

So the older Silent Hills are out because there is more thriller less combat, and he does love to shoot things.

Edit: And on my pay I don't think I'll be able to afford two games @_@

Yeah, Bioshock, Dead Space annnnd possibly Umbrella Chronicles all fit the "mindless horror fun" bill.

Homecoming really doesn't (Silent Hills are pretty puzzley), so it's probably not your brother's game.

Ok, scratch Homecoming off the list then.

Bioshock and Dead Space. I'll probably have an hour-long convo with the guys at Gamestop about them, but here is good too -- Which would be more worth my gaming dollar? >_>

Oh, gee, that's a hard question considering they're both excellent games.

Hold on, let me consult my coins.

Okay, it's heads. Bioshock, that is.

Just throwin' some ideas around.
1.Prince of Persia- not the genres you mentioned but most people with a passing interest in games would enjoy it.
2.Rock Band- probably too expensive, but a great game your bro and his GF can play together.
3.Any of the Ravin' Rabits games for Wii. Again great for multiple people and everybody like rabbits.
4.Bioshock- this does fit your genre requirements but also is a game that requires a significant commitment, but its great.

If its between Bioshock and Deadspace go Bioshock. It's not perfect but nothing matches it in atmosphere.

- Already got Rock Band, 1 and 2.
- Don't have a PS3.

My family is great with Casual Games, I'm trying to provide some more personalized entertainment for my sibling and his girlfriend.

Orange Box is also a great(and cheap!)choice. Lots of mindless shooting, plus some great story driven, atmospheric gaming.(not horror, but still a great setting)

That was going to be my suggestion. Or if they have a Wii you could get them RE4 for the Wii, I had fun replaying that game with the Wii controler.

Well you could do this, all though it is kind of lame, but you could get them a fancy I.O.U game thingy for RE5.
