Why do people bother putting these up? They require alot of time, work and money spent. They are a major drain on the power bill and if poorly integrated with the house are a fire hazard.

I can understand people wanting to get into the christmas spirit but their function appears to be directed at showing off, to be the most impressive house in the neighborhood for pointless rivalries.

tradition mostly I think.

I actually see quite a few less lights up this year with the way the economy is.

I used to but the aggravation factor of it caused me to stop, I mean yea they are pretty and all but a pain to take down.

Especially if the are frozen to everything, i prefer to drive around and look at everyone elses
hard work.

We haven't put them up for a while, ever since we spent a year in which string we put up got cut to pieces by hooligans. We got sick of putting up strings of lights and realized how nice it was to not have to put them up and take them down.

Our neighbours do it to show of, some people even stop to take photos and actually go looking for these houses.

I like to do Christmas lights.
The season is to celebrate the Birth of Jesus and by golly I don't go half-way about celebrating my favorite buddie's birthday.

Heh, it's actually pretty convenient for us to put up Christmas lights. It's always dark in here during winter so it's a good way for people to not feel depressed since there is more light when you put them up. And it looks pretty :3 Although I hate the American style, I just feel like puking if people put too much Christmas lights up.

Not all Americans put up too many lights. I don't like a huge amount of lights either, just enough to add some sparkle to the Christmas decorations. We put up a small tree (about 3 feet tall or so) in the living room and put lights on the frames of the living room, bathroom and kitchen windows. That's it. I never do the blinking lights and most of the time, the window lights are white with no colors. I like the warm glow that the lights give the rooms at night. I don't do the outside of the house as it's too much trouble and besides, I want to see the lights for myself. I'm not going to go outside the house to look at them at night, so why put them up outside. My parents were the same way. They'd take us kids to see the big light display at the city park in town so we could see them and donate to the civic organizations that put the displays up each year, but we put up very few lights ourselves at home.

Feel free, go ahead, don't ban it or anything. But I find it a little bit creepy. I put up the Christmas tree today though and it was a similarly creepy, and unenjoyable to boot.

I hate Christmas.

It's getting a bit daft here though. Really cheap and trashy light up santas and snowmen and the like. I like the lights but only when it is tasteful.

They help you get into the Christmas spirit. They're pretty and make the house look more festive. That's a good enough reason to me.

Ha, I'm glad you proved me wrong. The way you put your Christmas lights up sounds rather nice actually. It's probably just an image stuck into my head since when ever you see a picture of an American home around Christmas it's just so over the top with the Christmas lights and all. And recently I heard that this classmate of mine who is in America as an exchange student, well the place where she is staying they have at least one Christmas tree in every room. That just creeps me out ^^' But anyway, the way you do your Christmas lights sounds nice and you should keep it that way! =)
