im sure you all know that last year rage against the machine got xmas number 1 in an attempt to beat the x-factor. this year bird is the word made an attempt but only got to no.3 and corey taylor also made an attempt

i like this idea and i think it could continue, i think next year we should try to get "god save the queen" by the sex pistols to no.1 this is because the xmas no.1 always introduces the queens speach and it would be really cool if the queen was introduced by this song. i dont think many people would approve though

I still don't know why people don't try and get a good christmas song to number 1. That would make more sense, and i don't think any one would argue.

Done successful in Sweden this year, "metal on Metal" by Anvil beat out the regular crowd of Idol and other stuff that's been on TV.

I have no idea why people care so much. It's just making even more of a novelty out of the whole thing.
people care because x-factor is just aweful, its a case of people being told what to listen to

thats why rage was so successful as it had the lyrics "fuck you i wont do what you tell me" although ironically simon cowell bought rages record contract before the campaign started so he still won

i think my idea works on a new level because a) it beats xfactor and b) it introduces the queen. id really love to get john lydon's backing for this next year, im sure he'd love the publicity

Nope I always miss it when I turn on the radio so if it was number 1 then I would have more of a chance of catching it when its not ending =P
i have to admitt its one of my favourite xmas songs but it is very much over played, i suppose when you work in a shop you hear it all the time on radio

Being told what you want to listen to? If you don't like something, don't listen to it. The only reason the X-Factor single was so successful this year is because people bought it. It wasn't because Simon Cowell broke into everyone's house, drugged them and replaced their money with a copy of the single.

Jesus Christ, this attitude of 'OMG TEH MUSIC INDUSTRY SUCKZ' is so fucking stupid.
yeah people bought it then, 2 weeks down the line the same people who bought will claim its shit and seek out the next fad that everyone else is listening to

the music industry doesnt suck, the music industry is just that (an industry) its the brainless majority that suck. i personally have nothing against simon cowell he is a clever businessman who makes money of these idiots

Yeah, so what? Getting the 'Bird is the Word' to Number 1 was never going to make those people suddenly go 'Wait, I've been listening to mediocre music this entire time!' They still bought the single, and they'll still buy the next one. And the next one. It's a completely worthless endeavour.
its not trying to convince anyone else, let the morons be morons but its more of a statement that you are not one of those idiots. that is until the mindless xfactor drones join in and then the whole thing is ruined

Because there is no such thing as a good Christmas song.

Please, for the love of (insert deity or world leader here), it is not called The Bird Is The Word. It is called Surfin' Bird. Sorry, that just drives me insane.

Anyway: my personal choice for Christmas #1 ended up at #66. Go look that up for yourselves if you're interested enough, 'cos I don't think it's entirely suitable for this site. Although I will say that the campaign hasn't ended, the publicity it's got for even getting into the charts means we're trying to get it into the top 40 for next week's chart.

Clichéd, overplayed, et cetera. I've probably heard that song in excess of a hundred times since I was born (and probably more). I'm sick of it by now.
It's a damn good song, and even if you don't like it because of the amount of plays, it's still a damn good song.

Much as I adore this song and the band as a whole, it's unlikely it'll make it. After Rage's success last year too many people have tried to replicate that success with other songs and now there's just too many contenders and not enough voters to go around to provide enough support for any of them. We're just spread too thin now.

I must say though, it would truly be amazing.

There is no such thing as an objectively good song. Everyone has a different taste in music and none is more valid than another.

For what it's worth I like Fairytale Of New York, but it's not a massive stretch to imagine that others wouldn't like it.
