Ooookay.....I was about to the bottom of page one expecting a technical overview with some cool screen shots when realized I was deep in the middle of spoiler territory. Warning next time please for people who want to be surprised by the game when it actually comes out!!! Gah.

I wish they would make the old races have awesome starting zones... The original 8 are noticeably lame compared to this.

Uh, yeah - soon they'll do something as hackneyed as cel-shading...

I don't think you can pull off a storyline centralised around your character in an MMO. There are going to be thousands of bombs kicked into that volcano, no wonder it goes off.
This, this and more this! Instead of making mmorpgs feel more like a world where everyone is participating and doing his thing, Blizzard are doing the exact opposite with what is possibly the worst Chosen One syndrome I have ever seen.Giving everyone the same bloody backstory of how they singlehandedly destroyed Kezan on their very lonesome is such an immersion breaker, I mean I know I don't go to play WoW for immersion but it seems like they aren't even trying anymore.

When will mmo developers understand that MMORPGs aren't singleplayer games -_-.

I was skeptical about the goblin race, and was going to make a worgen and go crawling back to the alliance. But now, this gonna be the first charater I make when the expansion comes out.

The reference point is surely the amazing Death Knight starter zone. And just like that I'm sure that the second you leave you'll be back to utterly derivative "kill X" quests in much the same way as Northrend was business as usual.

Did they redo any of the other races starting zones? What does silvermoon look like now?
So far as we're aware, both Silvermoon and Exodar (and the rest of BC content) will remain largely unchanged. At least, that's how they are currently.

Still several of the other starting areas are quite different. The Tauren 1-5 area is quite different and their battle with the quillboar has taken on a new tenor (though the rest of Mulgore is largely unchanged, save for the huge gate blocking off Mulgore from South Barrens now). The trolls actually start in the Echo Isles now and have an entirely new 1-5 experience. And while, the orcs still begin in their little training valley, the rest of Durotar (where orcs and trolls do their 6-10) is almost completely flooded and you'll get a good mix of new and nostalgia quests. I haven't hit the undead zone, but I hear that storywise it is awesome.

On the Alliance side, Elwynn is largely the same (though the Westfall/Redridge twofer are very satisfying in their changes). Dun Morogh is not ready for testing yet, so I'm sure we'll see some good changes there (and the gnomes will supposedly have their own starting area (like the trolls do with Echo Isles). Teldrassil is pretty unchanged physically and has largely only been retuned for better questing.

Fortunately, this has not been the case at all. I've played both gob and worgen to lvl 45 and the questing experience for each has remained largely top notch. For the Horde I've played through Aszhara, Ashenvale, Stonetalon, Desolace, Feralas, South Barrens, Northern Stranglethorn, Cape of Stranglethorn, Arathi, and Hinterlands. For the Alliance I've played through Darkshore, Westfall, Redridge, Darkshire, Northern Stranglethron, Cape of Stranglethorn, Teldrassil, Ashenvale, Stonetalon, Desolace, Feralas, and Southern Barrens.

For my money, the coolest of the redone zones is Stonetalon (esp. for Horde). On its heels is Westfall (which plays out like a CSI murder mystery), Redridge (which homages Rambo), Desolace (where you get to help the centaur tribes get their act together and get to spend time transformed into a naga), the Cape of Stranglethorn (which escalates the war between Booty Bay and the local pirates), and Ashenvale (which has the Alliance and Horde in the midst of a devastatingly pitched battle to control the area - actually, almost all Kalimdor is deeply involved the fresh war between H & A).

And for the most part, each of those zones is wholly new with a number of inventive quests. Largely I was surprised by how few kill X quests there were. (And the times when there were such quests, it was a natural bundle with one or two other quests, so that even if you weren't assigned that number of heads for bounty, you'd probably end up meeting the requirement anyway).

The only ready-for-testing zone I've played through that left me less than satisfied is Arathi (which features astonishingly few changes). I'm hoping Blizzard will revisit the zone before launch because it could be awesome but just isn't.

I'd love to believe that, but it just doesn't sound practical. There are 3000 new quests in Cataclysm, if even a third of them are as creative, interesting and rich as most of the Death Knight quests were then that means Cataclysm has significantly more content than WoW, Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King and five years of content patches combined.

What does cel-shading have to do with series consistency?

These are goblins. Goblins in Warcraft have always been loopy explosive tech guys, from their intro with jetty zeppelins and suicidal explosives to the battletech-style powersuit foresters and rocket-pulled racing skiffs. Explosive steampunk city is the norm: welcome to being a Warcraft Goblin. It's not for everyone, but it's not Blizz trying to modernize their game. This is just the Goblin style of things.

Related: if it bothers you that much you'll probably want to avoid Gnomeregan, too. From vanilla. In the Gnome/Dwarf starting zone. Yeah, tech's been in the game from very early on.

Man, the panties are in a bunch today. Look at my post, then look at what I responded to. In my own half-assed way, I'm defending the game.
It just so happens the poster I responded to was too smart to bite. I have an account, fer chrissakes.

I've always thought WoW-players have gotten sort of a cold reception here. Please don't make me start to think it's deserved.

All I directed at you was a question about cel-shading. No need to get ruffled. The rest was for Eukaryote, which pretty much just extended our conversation from a previous thread.

I hadn't noticed any particular cold shoulder toward WoW players here, to be honest, but I haven't been looking for it either.

"My buddy who signed up with me didn't want to play "the bad guys" of the Horde"

I love this notion. It shows just how simple a good chunk of the playerbase are.

SPOILERS. Yeah, at the top of the article next time, please. I say that because when I play as a goblin I will now know why their island is destroyed. And that makes me sad.
You may want to avoid any WoW related article from now until Cata release. Almost all will contain spoilers, especially if you're cautious and want to know nothing about the story line.

Anyways, hooray at goblins for finally being FOR THE HORDE! You will have a lot of catching up to do to join the Forsaken in awesomeness still.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I see nothing qualifying "Rediculously good looking" about this. The causing an eruption is humorous, but aside from that looks just like everything else I've seen in WoW. I really wish they would make something a bit more innovative instead of going for the most rediculous stuff they can think of.

Of course, that is just one mans opinion.
