Never once had to watch the whole of the intro video. Second it gets to "Welcome, my son - I've missed you!" pressing enter skips it to the main menu. No idea why other people are having this problem, I know plenty that skip it just like me with no alteration to the game. :| This expansion looks freakin' awesome - I haven't paid for any of the DLC but this is looking hopeful.

Argh, I'm so close to loving Civ. I just wish it let you go further in building your own culture from nothing to an empire rather than mishmashing together existing historical things. Something like Spore should have been. But now we get to build a religion... I'm tempted.

Loki is chief god, he screws with his brother Thoth for kicks. They [del]fight crime[/del] empower their followers to cull the heathens.

I know we're not exactly the most interesting country, but come on; we have a whole continent to ourselves. They can't just ignore us completely, can they?
Former British colonies being considered civilizations? HA! That'd be the day, that's like wanting a Canadian civ with Laurier as the leader and Task Force Two as their special unit...

Oh wait, that would be awesome.

You're right. Naturally this means that the U.S. of A. also gets scratched.

Actually it would be great to have a Civ game in which you start out as one of the ancient civilizations, and as the game progresses there are revolutions, uprisings, and independence declarations which lead to the modern civilizations. Come to think of it, the mod "Rhye's Civilization" accomplishes just that (among many other things). But I still wish they'd make it official.

It can't improve Civ V as much as Civ IV was improved by BtS, but Civ V is a superior game to begin with, in my opinion. The combat is indeed massively improved, and everything that the hexagons have brought.
The few problems I have, or have had, with the game, are the seemingly too minor differences between civilizations (as appropriately historically relevant they might be). The diplomacy (which was fixed a lot with the patch that added the data element: '+1 we seek friendly relations with your civ' and so on (which I greatly missed from BtS)). Generic and samey seeming city states that you need to throw coins at every now and dismiss their constant notifications....
You say Civ5 is a better game but then go on to quite accurately list a lot that is wrong with the game. Civ5 is a good game, and I do like the hex tiles, the unit resource limits and the combat, but it still is the first Civ that failed to excite me. I've only played it two times, which is nothing short of scandalous.
I suppose I don't like it when they streamline and simplify things, and Civ IV had so much depth that I guess it was hard to improve upon. Hopefully the expansion pack will make Civ5 a more involved experience.

Don't let my comprehensive nature fool you. I can assure you that I could build a worse-looking list about Civ IV, even post-BtS, did I remember it just as accurately as needed for doing so. Some of these problems have been fixed, at least to some extent. And many others, even the ones I couldn't remember at the spot, are possibly going to be fixed with this expansion pack. A great deal of them have in fact been fixed by hefty patches. Some of the problems I've grown to see as merely different ways of executing things, and none of them have annoyed, at any point, enough to dislike the game to any considerable extent.

It is streamlined, as well as simplified, and loaded with great improvements but I see all of that as progress. There isn't quite as much microing anymore, at least on the surface, but that doesn't take away anything in the scheme of things. I still find myself completely enchanted in a flow-state-of-mind thinking the resource-gathering nuances, progression plans, problems...; all the things that collectively create the love & hate -relationship we have towards the one-more-turn-syndrome at 5 AM. Just like Civ IV.

It's a delight to see fellow escapists enjoying Civilization's as well. I hope you can still find lots of enjoyment from Civ V. An open mindset opens all the doors for game changes as well.

Well it's an American studio, you can't expect them to leave themselves out haha. I'll clarify, modern 'middle powers' that were formally British colonies aren't used, hence no Canada, Australia, South Africa, etc. Come to think of it most of Africa gets the shaft in Civ games.

I like the idea too, but I think the biggest issue would be overcoming the waves of Civ fans complaining about it being different.

That's why games take so long to get here (or not at all!); we have a continent to ourselves, and everyone else is jealous.

Would love to play Hannibal, march those elephants across the map to squash cities.
