So I just finished watching Clannad & Clannad After Story. I think this was a really good anime (top 1 on my list), and found my self doing something I don't often do. Crying, normally I don't cry. And other animes that did this to me was just once, this was multiple times. I was wondering, if you have watched this anime(or any other). That was just as saddening, angering, and about every other emotion you can think of as this is, or is it just me?

I watched Clannad and cried manly, manly tears. The show got me so emotional the last like 7 or so episodes of After Story were amazingly hard to watch because of the emotional roller coaster.

@SoberThal, the anime didnt do a good job of explaining what happened at the end. The Visual Novel however makes perfect sense of the exact same ending by explaining it.

Other shows that made me emotional/sad include,
Kanon
Voices of a Distant Star
The Place Promised in our Early Days
Air

Nope I know exactly what your talking about, I loved Clannad and Clannad after story, I cried mutliple times during the anime.

As for other animes I've cried at, well one in particular stands out.

They have to burn their ship the Going merry. I know it was just a ship, but the scene was done so well.

I thought that Clannad was easily one of the best anime I'd seen in a long while. Definitely one of the most emotional.

Definitely one of my all time favourites, and a real tear-jerker.

Though not quite so good at the latter as "5cm per second" was.

I haven't finished Clannad yet, so I have yet to see these tear-jerking scenes everyone speaks of.

As for animes that have made me cry in the past? Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh. I remember I actually saw the final episode of Lucky Star after I finished my final day of high school. And the graduation scene in AzuDai was just so well done, I felt like hugging Chiyo!

I've gotta agree with Sober Thal, the way it ended really felt cheap, even more cheap than Kanon's miracle ending. Which is a shame because I enjoyed most of the 2 seasons of Clannad. Well minus: the Fuuko arc, the library girl arc & the shota boy arc (show's how much I cared about them, since I cannot remember their names).

Well Clannad was a fantastic visual novel adaptation, but it just wasn't good enough for me and most definitely not a serious I'd put in my Top 10... 8/10

In comparison, Kanon (2006) gets a 9/10 from me and Air also an 8/10.

It's not that the non-explanation bothered me, it was that what happened (or didn't) was the ending!! I felt robbed. Most of After Story was pointless. Just a cheap attempt to make people cry.
I can see where you're coming from however read on for reasoning on why the ending was perfect and I can completely understand anyone who never played the VN finding it to be a cheap end.

It is established that the Illusionary World is a dimension adjacent to the one the characters reside in , as speculated by Kotomi's parents before their untimely demise. It is not bound by time and space, as travellers who come in are able to exit in a different time.
This IW can only be accessed when one possess the right conditions.

Yukine mentions of the Town legend of light orbs, which only appear when one attains a moment of happiness. Only a select few people are blessed to see and receive such orbs, and Tomoya is one of them.

While Yukine makes first mention of the light orbs after Tomoya sees and receives one, they can also be seen during Fuuko's "class" with Sanae-san (series 1, episode 8), Kotomi receiving her teddy bear (series 1, episode 14), and Misae-san spending time with her cat (AS, episode 6), as well as Tomoya reconciling with his father (AS, episode 19).
These light orbs then travel beyond the dimensional plane into IW, carrying the thoughts of happiness of these townspeople.

Yukine makes mention of light orbs existing long before everyone's time, so it can be speculated that this Illusionary World existed for time immemorial, granting miracles to other people, and thus is born the legend.

Now onwards to even more walls of text. IW=Illusionary World RW=Real World(Or at least the real world as it applies to Clannad)

Events not run "chronologically", as IW is not bound by time and space, but run in the order that they occur.
1. Akio runs to the big tree in the mystical open plain and makes a wish to save Nagisa. The Town grants him this miracle by using the light orbs within the IW to save her. But in turn, this binds her life to the town. In a way, the IW now "feeds off" from Nagisa's attachments towards the town, resulting in her fragile health.
2. Tomoya and Nagisa meet and fall in love. This unintentionally causes Nagisa's attachment to shift from the Town towards Tomoya, as a result, the IW would "extract" the lifeforce from Nagisa in order to maintain its existence. (Before Akio made the contract, the IW had always been just a container for the light orbs. )
3. Nagisa dies, and Ushio inherits Nagisa's contract with the Town.
4. Ushio dies.
5. Due to her unique existence with the IW, and her subconscious will to save her mother (this is mostly speculated), Ushio is reborn in the IW and binds her will to it. Though she loses her memories in RW.
6. Tomoya, either through death (from grief, suicide?) or through a very strong will, also arrives in the IW, as a light orb (also losing his memories in RW).
7. Ushio sensed an orb that somehow seems more sentient than the others, and thus creates a body for that orb (Tomoya/the Robot).
8. Both Ushio and the Robot begin their life in IW.
9. The Robot somehow remembers something, but can't exactly place what it is, and is compelled to want to take Ushio out of the IW. As Ushio's will integrates even more with the IW, winter arrives.
10. Ushio now remembers part of her memories in RW and her desire to save her mother.
11. Ushio tells the Robot (Tomoya) about the light orbs, and sends him back in time, back to when Tomoya first met Nagisa, in order to collect as many orbs as possible.
12. Tomoya returns to that point in RW, but loses his memories in IW. Ushio becomes one with the IW, collecting the orbs as Tomoya receives them in various alternate timelines.
13. In the various alternate realities (as seen in the game, and in the DVD special episode 24, where Tomoya ends up with Tomoyo instead), Tomoya collects the various light orbs for every happiness he, or someone else he helps, attains.
14. Ushio in turns receives them, and "resets" the world to that point for every orb collected so that Tomoya may go and collect more. As there are more orbs, the IW regains its ability to sustain itself.
(Points 15-17 in the original refers to mechanics more relevant to the game players than the anime watchers, which I feel would be redundant, so I'll skip to point 18)
18. And finally, Tomoya enters the timeline we see in the anime, where he meets and marries Nagisa. Nagisa still dies in this timeline, but he still manages to collect a few more orbs before coming to RW Ushio's death.
19. As Tomoya now collected quite a lot of orbs, IW Ushio is now able to perform the miracle by sending Tomoya back to when RW Ushio is born, and with the power of the orbs, saves Nagisa's life again.
20. As history has been altered, the Ushio born in this RW is considered a different person than IW Ushio (though their souls are linked, think Tsubasa Chronicle for this one, i.e. same soul, different bodies).
21. Due to the family love created by the Okazakis, the IW is able to sustain itself, and RW Ushio no longer falls ill.
22. Her task completed, IW Ushio travels back to RW, where her soul "fuses" with RW Ushio, and she is found sleeping under the tree.

So while the anime never conveyed this point well. Thats the best explanation of it I can give.

Above spoiler is kinda OT but I really do like discussing Clannad with people.

I cant believe I also left out Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Oh god that show D:

Well, the game is on my to-do list, so I might have to come back to that spoiler box. If <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.163769-Neutral-Drow-reviews-Kanon>how much I enjoyed Kanon is any indication, I'll probably love it just as much.

...just a shame that I still have to finish at least three other games before coming to it. >_>

I gotta admit, my one real problem with that anime is that things didn't get enough time devoted to them compared to the game (a supremely unfair complaint, I know), and the endings were no exception.

Ayu's miracle felt a lot more significant in the game when it was limited. She only had one wish left, after all, and she can only save one of three people with it.

...or just two, if you're a wimp like me and firmly believe that she herself always wakes up in the end.

I dunno. I've heard a few would wring tears from a stone, which is exactly how Clannad is often described, but I either never got around to watching them or just didn't find them as good.

It's so annoying. I really want to find another one that will get me like that.
I mean, I cannot honestly say I cried (Me: 1, Stones: 0), but I did genuinely care when, you know, everything happened.
As much as I can care about a thing, anyway.

Holy crap that anime ruined me emotionally. Seriously, I never cried during movies or anything until that show. Since then, I cry in everything. It was so... I mean the scene in After Story with Ushio in the field of flowers? My gosh...

For that matter, get the soundtrack. Just a few notes of the Dango song (or any piano song from that soundtrack, for that matter), and you'll be crying all over again. It's insane. I freaking love that show.

Just finished Clannad & Clannad After Story.
But I didn't cry (or even come close to crying) that was a let down for me, perhaps I am broken, emotionality backward or just plan cold. OK nice things first then the final blow, In no way is it a bad anime, it has some will thought out characters and the drama is balanced out with comedy that's fairy well written (not enough Fuko :D) and then there the final blow I said it would happen. Drama,in my cold sinister heart can't drive an anime it can ride shotgun, chill in the back sit or be tied up in the boot while my old friends action and adventure are at the helm speeding down the road at 80MPH. Then there the problem with the nothing happening for a life time (well it felt like one) because they straying form the story every 10 minutes to help some one else or have pointless what-if story but I wouldn't know about them didn't finish one.

All an all its not bad or perhaps I am over thinking it if dramas your thing then go for it its worth seeing at the neast.

nagisa dies that made me smile then she comes make to life made me angery (found her annoying) then the ending felt like a kick in the balls

I shed exactly one tear when watching Clannad after story.
It's the only show that's ever made me cry.

Also: Clannad is one of the best anime ever, period.
And yes, I very much liked the ending. It did so well in conveying Tomoya's development as a person and I hate it when people complain that the ending was happy. "It isn't meaningful if the protagonist isn't left in suffering, durrrrr" [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TrueArtIsAngsty]

Listening to that song practically hurts...
I'm just brought back to the field and the train scene and it's just so... emotional.

Curse you, fiend! You know what you've done to me for the day?? Now as I go about my daily business I can't stop that song fron running through my head, which makes me think about the scene in which it played, which gets me all weird and emotional and makes my eyes mist a bit. Then I move on to thinking about other scenes from the show, and it only gets worse! Sigh... good show.
