Clarification post... about Bans and lolwuts

I've noticed a few people now that have been permabanned for something as simple as replying "lol what" or "lulwut".

I mean I know that, that is bad posting... but a permaban? That seems a bit harsh...

I've read through the stickies on the banhammer and all that- but I still don't quite get it- unless those posters where warned on several occasions that they would be banned for bad posting.

Can anyone in the know clear up my fears?

Some people have made repeat offenses.
Enough to think that they won't stop, and deserve a permaban.

It's a one word answer, which is a no-no here. It also doesn't add much to conversations.

Those posters had several instances of this. (I assume you are referring to Eggo)

Either way, these responses bring nothing of value to the discussion at hand and are just a waste of space seen as an effort to bump post counts.

Just like IndigoDingo [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.123786#2530270]. If you look up the post he actually got banned for it's completely innocuous. But if you'd been around for months before that... You'd know why.

I agree with Radeonx, some people are just asking for it.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Eggo, and his "lolwut" was just the straw that broke the camel's back. He, and a few others throughout the Escapist's history, like Richard Groovy Pants, was a subtle troll, who eventually crossed the line one too many times. When that happened, however, they just banned them for the first post they came across, which happened to be lolwut.

That is, of course, unless you're referring to the weekly Zero Punctuation bans, in which case it's simply because it's that much of a problem.

I gotta say, I HOPE was after repeat offenses. Permabanning a dude for one "lolwut" is nothing more than mod-sponsored trolling.
well I mean i didn't want to say it like... but if it is for repeat offenders then I guess we are all the better for it?

Still a permaban seems harsh...

If they're repeat offenders, it would mean that the other bans had already been put in place, but to no avail.

i have never used lolwut. And i've never been Warned even lol. if i ran a forums anyone who used 1 word answers would get banned. Its lame lol. Getting post count up without contributing.
By that logic then wouldnt banning all the near-pointless "what is your favourite *one word answer here* threads" would be bananable?

edit: bananas

Think about that though. A permaban for a silly comment, and a permaban for advocating a resurgence of Nazism. I've seen em both. For fuck's sake, am I the only one seeing a problem with those two offenses both being worth the same damn punishment? That's messed up.
All repeat offence bans happen for the same reason, regardless of the nature of the repeated crime(s): Repeated ignorance of the warnings and rules of the Escapist Forums. I call it 'Unrepentant Dickery'.

If you post 'lolwut' after having been told not to do so 10 times, you're getting a permaban for the inability to follow rules that have been clearly explained to you, not for simply using the word. Any instance you see of that occuring is an example of this, one-word posters in other cases will recieve warnings... or probations, of they have done it once or twice previously.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that anyone who posts lolwut here is going to be probated.

Anyway, constant pissing off of the mods will get anyone banned. Plus, with the hammer comes the temptation to use it...

Correct. These things are called list threads and they are not allowed.

Also, the mods here are pretty lenient quite frankly. People who get banned here are often given many, many chances. Never just look at someone's banned post and make a judgment on that - you have to look at the person's entire posting history.

Some people just never learn about the communities rules. Those who get banned after repeat offences were always on probation or suspension and flounted the rules. They had large egos and believed that because they were well known and had large post counts that it didn't matter what they did. They failed to show humility and were thus punished for it. It's what happens when you don't respect the rules of the community.

it's basically a straw that broke the camel's back type thing. as many others have said it's because they've been warned and banned for lesser time before and they still can't follow the rules so they suffer bannination

it can be a combination of rule breakings as well, The Escapist is also cracking down on the "lolwut" or "this" type of posts, this is why it's being noticed more
