I quite fancy getting into something soothing and relaxing, a friend suggested I try out something in the classical genre. While I'm not talking about Opera classical, I'd probably give some of it a go. Anyway my point is, is anyone with any knowledge about the genre able to suggest something worth listening to?

No. No no no. That is not an invitation for those of you who have no knowledge of the genre to pop out from where ever you are hiding and go "Mozart" or "Beethoven" for the singular purpose of getting your post count up because it is the only way you can measure your worth as a human being.

I'd like responses to this thread to be from people who know what they are talking about, and hopefully maybe a little discussion about the genre, so that I am able to broaden my musical pallet.

Most of the songs by Frank Sinatra, but if you just want something easy to listen to The Joker by the Steve Miller Band. Another good person to listen to is The Beatles and Stevie Ray Vaughn. I don't know if I spelled that right. But if you want something a bit more contemporary besides the Beatles a good choice is Pearl Jam.

Love it. That's what I'm talking about

Yeah, I have the complete Beatles collection, and love it muchly (not a word I know... Yet.) And although there are many, many different sounds produced by them, I'd like to sample a little something new.

I like classical when I write sometimes. You may want to check out Mark Bodino. He does classical songs on his guitar. His versions of Classical Gas, Scarborough Fair, and Fur Elise are beautiful. Ryuichi Sakamoto also does really ethereal sounding classical compositions. I have a whole playlist at my house (out now), so I can PM it to you if you're interested.

Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns. This has everything you could want from comical (The Tortoise) to traditonal (Aquarium) to beautiful (The Swan). However, if you end up getting a copy where its played the whole way through, I recommend finding out the names of the various movements 1st so you can read what each one is meant to be.

Also, while again in the vein of "Opera Classical", I'd also recommed "The Queen Symphony" by Tolga Kashif. Rather then just sticking the songs of Queen in front of an orchestra, he re-interpreted it and I think its fantastic. Movement 5 "Andante Doloroso" is probably the easiest to listen too, but its worth listening to the whole thing from start to finish if you have 45 minutes to spare.

...I'm a bit worried about the definition of "classical" to some people posting in this thread.

Stevie Ray Vaughan...really? I love him to death but he's not classical

Anyways,

Try listening to E.S. Posthumus. Their music is amazingly beautiful and imho very soothing and relaxing. You could start with this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j56L2zbmFf4] one, the song is so beautiful it makes me wanna cry. Pretty much every song from E.S. Posthumus is worth listening to. :) Their music isn't exactly classical but it is however orchestral.

I'm not going to go over the songs you probably already know. What I'm going to give you is some of the less common ones I really like. As you might notice, my specialization is in Chopin. Also, I played classical piano for some years, so most of these are piano.

Beethoven
* Moonlight Sonata, 3rd Movement (not the 1st one, which is famous)
* Tempest Sonata, 3rd Movement
* 9th Symphony, 1st Movement (not the last movement, Ode To Joy)
Grieg
* Anitra's Dance
* Piano Concerto in A Minor, 1st Movement
Chopin
* Revolutionary Etude
* Winterwind Etude
* Fantasy Impromptu
* Military Polonaise
* Heroic Polonaise
* Polonaise Op 44
* Nocturne Op.15 No.3
* Nocturne Op.55 No.1
* Nocturne Op.72 No.1
* Minute Waltz ("minute" in this case means small, not as a measure of time)
Lizst
* Liebestraum
Brahms
* Waltz Op.39 No.15
* Hungarian Dance No.10 (the piano-and-violin version is best)

It's hard to go wrong with Bach, though much to my chagrin I can't bloody remember the name of my favorite piece. It doesn't really matter, though, I've never heard anything he wrote performed which I didn't like.

I'm not the biggest fan of Mozart since it seems a little too "Flowers and puppies and rainbows" happy but different strokes, I guess.
