Classics are Expensive

I recently have returned from Otakon 2011, an experience that was wonderful and full of wonder for me and mine. However, while I was strolling around the Dealer's Room (a place chock full of vendors, for those of you not in the know), I happened upon a booth that is there every year. They are known for buying and selling old video games, all the way back to the original Atari games. Their prices are normally decent, and you can find good old classics for relatively cheap.

However, they were selling a coppy of Final Fantasy 7 for the orignal Playstation, marked at $79.99. Is it that classics are expensive, or was it simply a fluke? Anybody run into similar situations?

Final Fantasy 7 is ridiculously high-priced. The cheapest it is on Amazon is around $30, last I checked, for a used copy- new starts at $160. I can only assume that's because it ended up being so wildly popular. That, combined with the fact that it's getting rather old and therefore rarer, means that it's going to be pricy. And its spectacular cult status means that it's going to be far more pricey than the norm for rare older games.

Can't say I've run into any similar situations. I can usually scout out a fairly good deal somewhere if I really want a game.

JEEZ, and I thought Persona 3 was expensive. ($35 dollars to be exact)

Banjo-Kazooie and -Tooie were also very high priced. I have no idea why though.

You're joking, right? I got a copy of FF VII (from Play.com if I remember correctly) for ?10. When did the world lose it's fucking mind?.. and how can I exploit it?

The rares something gets, the more expensive it becomes. For example, Etrian Odyssey I and II are both 60 bucks new on Amazon, even though they are DS games from 2007 - 2008.

Nope. Not joking. Just double-checked my prices, actually. And I agree it's absolutely insane... and am currently wishing for a sufficiently old and rare game that I'd be willing to part with so I can sell it and have money.

Platinum versions are very common, and I have seen quite a few of them in game shops in my time, going for ten to thirty pounds.

Original black labelled copies however are quite uncommon, and they can fetch around fifty pounds, or sometimes nearly seventy pounds.

The really rare games are games with a limited print run, like Panzer Dragoon Saga which fetch up to two hundred pounds on ebay.

Do an ebay search for Summer Carnival '92 Recca if you want crazy prices. There's at least 2 used copies for $699 and a new copy for $1500.

That's how it is with everything ATLUS publishes. If you don't get the games when they're new, you'll have a hard time finding them. I love ATLUS, I just wish they made more copies of their games, so that even if I miss a release, I'll still have a chance to play the game.

Gog.com my friend. They have tons of old games for $10 or less.
This. GoG is great for old PC games, even if they are missing a few games that I wish they would have.

yeah, I got Suikoden 2 back in the states for 10 USD and now it goes for almost 100 USD used, that is silly to me that anyone would pay that much for a game

Thank god for emulators for the older classics.
emulators that work and don't require you to know ungodly amounts about coding to make work you mean?
In other words, most emulators.(NES, SNES, GAMECUBE, N64, PSX etc)

It's convention, he's operating on the idea that it's desirable and there's one born every minute.

It's going for about £5-15 on Ebay which less than $20. The game sold a few million, it's hardly rare.

Now, a western copy of Symphony of the Night...

Just try and find a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga under $100. =p It doesn't help that Europe and America only got about ten thousand copies each. (I was smart and bought my copy at launch)
