All of the old FF games. I seriously don't understand the nostalgia behind these games.

I can't get into almost all classics I didn't originally play at or around release. Case in point: Deus ex. I played it after the superb Human Revolution and just couldn't get into it at all. Fact is I really wanted to like it b/c I could really dig the general mood of the game, but the gameplay was just so many steps back from HR that it spoiled all my fun. Those archaic menu interfaces; ugh no thanks. Too much bother when the game itself just isn't nearly as fun to play as HR.

Had I played Deus ex when it originally came out, yeah, I would have probably really liked it.

Metal Gear. A series I never had much do do with growing up. I thought I'd start from the beginning and play Metal Gear on the MSX. And to be honest I actually didn't mind it. I ended up skipping Metal Gear 2 and going straight to MGS. As someone who's not into stealth games I actually didn't mind the gameplay. I actually think stealth games work really well (for me at least) in 2D. And while MGS is technically 3D it's mostly a top down perspective.

But the thing that made MGS unbearable for me and the reason I gave up an a few different occasions was the dialogue. There's just so much unnecessary exposition. Now I don't mind games with a lot of talking. I love Mass Effect. But in Mass Effect you get to know your crew over the course of the game between missions. In MGS you meet someone for the first time and have to sit there for 15 minutes while they tell you their life story. Their incredibly boring life story. It just drags on and on. I for the life of me can't understand how people find that crap remotely enjoyable.

Diablo 2. Like Diablo but stretched out to ten times the length. I enjoyed Diablo because it was a relatively short and tight game. It had pretty fast pacing and frequent cool/unique loot. All in all a fun experience. Enter Diablo 2. I played for maybe 4 hours and nothing interesting had happened. No cool quests, no interesting bosses, no unique weapons. Also I never even came close to going up against anything that I would consider a challenge. What a bore.

Final Fantasy Tactics is the one the bothers me most. I can't get over the controls. This one hurts because it is apparently fact that FFT is the gold standard of sRPG's and I really love the genre ...

I also have to make myself stay with Super Metroid. And Symphony of Time as well. Might speak to my lack of patience. But something about the controls and backtracking through 2d environments just doesn't work for me. (it does in Guacamelee though)

And like apparently a few of you I gave up on Ocarina of Time. Didn't grab me at all. But this one doesnt bother me as much.

I can really only play classic games that I've actually played before either when I was young or when they first came out. I never had a console so any of those games are already disqualified for me (can't get into Zelda for example). But give me Commander Keen and I can still get into it for some reason...

Nostalgia is a powerful force :p

MGS3: Snake Eater. The 20 min cutscene & the incessant phone calls put me off, got killed by crocs 2 min in, never returned to it.
If you get killed by the only 2 crocs that are even REMOTELY hazardous to you, you really are playing the game wrong.

I think the Legacy of Kain games are this to me. I can play through Blood Omen 2 fair enough but that's because it's so tragically watered down in terms of gameplay compared to Blood Omen 1. I'm completely unable to get into Soul Reaver 1 and 2 because big huge sprawling maps and third-person Metroidvania.

Just played through a good example:

Beyond Good & Evil.

Graphics are extremely outdated, music sucks, camera is complete shit, and story is lackluster to completely disappointing because the title promised something it is not.

Another example would be Soul Reaver 1. It's shit on PC.

And oh yes, Zelda OoT. I began to play it several times, always grew bored with it.

Oh, and the story of the first Deus Ex sucked. Badly. HR was much better. But I can forgive Deus Ex 1, the gameplay was good still.

Characterization in MGS has always been a mess. It's cheaply sentimental mixed with offbeat humor then bounces back to oldschool anime influences with walking tanks and cyborg ninjas. I personally love its eclectic mix, but what gives these games their real depth are Kojima's philosophical musings on the nature of information society, military industrial complex, genetic determination etc. All relevant to the day and age they were released. It's the reason why MGS2 is still my favorite game in the series, b/c Kojima really drops any and all pretense in this game by subverting player expectations, making no compromises on the game's original vision and deconstructing the narrative in a way only Kojima could. It was also near prophetic in its storytelling if you consider the game's original 2001 release date.

But yeah, if you don't enjoy the story in MGS games being mere representations of Kojima's commentary, then its unlikely you'll enjoy the series as a whole. :p

The maps in these games are pretty small and linear, but SR2 definitely went a little overboard with its puzzles. I replayed Blood Omen and SR1 a while ago, and while I personally enjoyed them that was largely thanks to nostalgia. :p Neither of those games aged particularly well.

I think you are my soul twin with this aspect... I have so many games on Steam for this reason! You don't realise how much games change either. I got Red Faction the other day. As much as it works nicely, wtf on the pacing and story. It's so weird! Also... There are no sights bar the ones on snipers, it confuses me no end. I got bored relatively quickly. It's like playing Serious Sam at times, but with less enemies. I got bored of the blocky visuals relatively quickly.

I also couldn't get into the Soul Reaver games. You mean I can't just kill enemies? Fine... I have to pic them up and throw them whilst they are stunned.. but... the pick up button is the same as the pick up weapon button, and they are standing by a weapon. And the camera never shows the guy sneaking up behind me. And there is no way of telling what the surroundings are meant to be unless you read the level name... bugger this for a game of frogs.

I also couldn't get into Fallout 1 or Baldurs Gate. I will keep trying though.

I am trying Gothic 1 and Summoner 1 too. So far the graphics are putting me off, but I will get used to them. Gothic I didn't get past the first area. I tried exploring, walked over to some barrels, was struck by lightning and died. W.T.F.

I bought a Sega set on HumbleBundle too. Loved all star racing, but that was pretty much it. Crazi Taxi wasn't what I remembered, (might as well just play GTA) Sonic Adventure DX :)/) Space Channel 5 Part 2, and Sega Bass Fishing all were sadly disapointing.

I also tried to play some old platformers that I loved as a kid, but either never had or never completed. Banjo Kazooie, Croc, Gex and Kingsley's Adventures were all a bit horrible to play!
Haha! Red Faction! I actually finished that one. It was a grind. I can't remember, but late in the game I think there's a gun that can see/shoot through walls and I was constantly dying. Honestly the only thing that got me through Red Faction was the fact that the evil company in the game was Ultor, which is constantly referenced in the Saints Row games.

Ah, you mean the Railgun ;) Loved that one :3
Also the semi-auto assault rifle with a scope. What bothered me a lot was that you had to re-enter the godmode cheat every time you changed suits =P (I've beaten it properly but when I was younger I just liked to run around and blow stuff up (satchel charges on people were great (and NO I do NOT have a problem =P)))

And I remember the greatest cutscene of them all ^^
It was when you first confront Capek and he starts rambling about science and lost miners and Parker just shouts "To hell with orders! Die Capek!" and motions like he's shooting about 17 times but only 5-6 gunshots actually get fired. It was amazing =P

Ah, right. I lost my train of thought and listed it because it fell into the category of games I stopped playing because I ruined my own fun with step by step walkthroughs. Thinking on it, Tierkreis was alright. It played fine but wasn't terribly interesting.

Hmmm, time for a quick edit.

The thing is from what I've heard about the craziness of MGS's story I think I would like it, it's just that the moment to moment character interactions are incredibly dull and long winded and I was never able to get through MGS because of it.

Add in another vote for Halo here. A friend lent me a copy of the port, and I was eager to see what I'd been hearing raving about for the previous two years. I was... distinctly underwhelmed.
I still wonder what anyone ever saw in that game.
I am the same as you. Although I do love the story of Halo and it's universe (until 343 fucked it up at least), I've always found the gameplay incredibly uninspired, while the floaty controls just don't feel right. I remember getting the PC version of Halo 1, excitedly installing it, then thinking "This is what all the fuss was about?"

My favourite game in the series has probably been Halo Wars, actually.

I like how "classics", for some people, turned into "any game you don't like and why". Bro, Eternal Sonata isn't a classic. But maybe I'm being too specific; when I think "classic" I think a big name that changed how games are viewed or played", like Final Fantasy VII or Halo.

Personally, I couldn't get into Mortal Kombat but that's just my dislike for PVP 2-player fighting games.

It's terrible of me to say this but I wouldn't play through Super Mario 64 either because I've always had this stupid fear of water levels and as SOON as I hit that sunken ship, I was like "NOPE I'M DONE"; that and... the piano. -shudder-

I'm also not a fan of playing the original Silent Hill; I have no problem watching it being played but I just COULDN'T get into the gameplay.

Sonic the Hedgehog. That game series was SO frustrating to me, I just couldn't even see what anyone liked about it. I tried, oh God, I tried. But I just... and the... with the... -throws arms up in frustration- DON'T TAKE ALL MY RINGS AWAY, DAMMIT. GOD WHY DON'T I HAVE ENOUGH SPEED.

Zelda, I tried the GB/SNES ones, Oot, Majoras Mask and till Twilight Princess I haven't cared much for them. I think the SNES one is quite good but OoT as I've stated on these forums I'm just not a fan of. I don't see the appeal and I've had it explained 'why it's great' to me too many times.

Castlevania games I can't get into either. I really will have to give Symphony of the Night another solid try but I just haven't gotten into them. It may be the really lethargic 'Belmont Strut' that makes it seem super slow to me (yes aware of the backdash and it's goofy) and it just kinda kills it for me.

Deus Ex (STOP PLEASE DON'T MURDER ME) I see the appeal, I like the idea, but the gameplay is very dated though very neat for the time, it just overall feels wonky and I'm not terribly into stealth. I did really enjoy the Let's Play I watched but I'm just not into it despite my love for cyberpunk and scifi. The new one seemed like some fun but I got out of it when I heard there was a better version coming to PC with 'fixed boss fights' after waiting ...finding my save file wouldn't work on the new version I lost motivation ...then I heard it's not as good a version otherwise for some weird reasons and now I'm at an impasse on what version to play.

Without "openly" stating what I mean by that statement, per se, I will say that I would rank the Persona games like this based on my overall experience: P3>P4>>P2>>>P1...

What's with the finger quotes around classic in the title? Makes it sound more snarky than it needs to, especially when most of the games being mentioned in the topic are legit classics. Don't see many people talking about Devastation or Pariah anymore after all. The fact that a game can still be remembered fondly 10+ years after its release is a pretty good indication it did something very right even if not everyone might see it.

Me? Never really been a fan of the Metal Gear series myself. Not very fond of the games sense of style even if I am a big fan of the stealth genre.
I think I was just after the heat of being pissed off with how rough Suikoden was. I think I'll fix it now that the snark factor has calmed down XD

Name a Nintendo IP, and I can't get into it. Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Punch Out, Pokemon, and ESPECIALLY Super Mario. I have no love for any of these games, expect for Super Mario RPG: Saga of the Seven Stars (it's called something else, but they should have used Saga, for the sake of alliteration). And it is not for the lack of trying. I just don't have fun playing these franchises ever since Link's Awakening, and I have no interest in ever trying them again.
