Ive been a PlayStation gamer for years now, but I was pretty dissapointed when the PS3 port of the Orange Box came out with framerate issues, bad loading times and no-one playing TF2. and then the lack of Left 4 Dead on PS3 pushed me over the edge.

So im trying to get into the whole PC gaming thing, downloaded Steam and everything, and im currently using Windows XP (nostalgic!) but i wanna be sure i can continue to play once ive gone to university and ive got my own computer (with Vista). Basically, if I bought the following XP compatible games off of Steam or on a disc...

Grand Theft Auto III
Max Payne
Thief II: The Metal Age
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Beyond Good & Evil
City of Heroes
Halo: Comabt Evolved
Rome: Total War
Civilization IV
The Orange Box (Half-Life 2)

...would they all continue to work once ive upgraded to Vista?

I don't see why not, but then I still use XP. A tip; don't bother with vista, its got a lot of problems, wait for windows 7.

Not nessecarily, some games don't work on Vista. At least two of them wouldn't, but I know for sure that Halo: Combat Evolved would.

Remember that if you use vista for gaming you need a far better PC that for gaming on XP

Vista is a RAM hog. Those all would still work on Vista, but as this guy puts it:

Beyond Good and Evil has problems with Vista, as I recall there are graphics issues with it. I can tell you that Grand Theft Auto III, The Orange Box, Civilisation IV and Max Payne work fine on mine, and Medieval: Total War works fine, but I don't have Rome.

I have Civ III on my Vista partition, and it works. so I'd expect IV to do the same. CoH should be fine, I hope the OB does, because I'm ordering it as soon as I get my computer back. If anything, you can probably run in compatability mode, I hear that works for a lot of games.

Rome:TW is fine on mine but, seeing that you haven't got vista yet you might as well wait for 7 but the choice is up to you.

Depends on whether you get the 32 bit Vista or the 64 bit Vista. XP is 32 bit, but most game released in the past 5 years or so should have no problem playing on 64 bit OS.

Why would anyone want to update to Vista? Windows 7 is out and is much better. Especially for games.

If you are not sure your PC will play them, just dual boot with an XP... but then you might as well uninstall Vista and make sure it doesn't block space on your HDD.

I've never found a game I couldn't get to work in Vista, though some games take patience messing with settings.

Yeah, if you don't have the resources for both Vista and gaming, I'd definitely stick with XP.

They should work fine. And unlike the others here, I love Vista, XP was always an eyesore for me. However, you could just get the Windows 7 RC as a free operating system for a year.

Rome works fine on Vista, as does all of the Orange Box games, Splinter Cell, and Halo.

Hey, are there literally no matches on TF2? 'Cos that makes me feel better over getting TOB on Pc rather than PS3 :D.

Anyways, as far as I know if you buy them off Steam then they should stick, and I distinctly remember playing Civ 4 on my Vista-running computer, from a disk.
Hope I helped:)

You shouldn't have a problem getting them to run, I've had a few of those games working on Vista. However, I wouldn't recommend changing to Vista unless you have at least 4gb of ram. Vista requires much more memory initially, and only at 4gb does it get better than xp. You could also just wait for Windows 7
