until i go to university (September 2010 probably) im stuck with XP. the only PC game ive got at the moment is World in Conflict and that runs about as smoothly as sandpaper.

my parents bought my sister a new PC for university and theyre gonna do the same for me. i presume by then Windows 7 will be already installed?

so i gather the best tip is to buy the oldest games on that list so that they run well on my PC?

and buy 'no-one plays TF2 on PS3' i mean that about five people do. and they all wanna play 2Fort.

For what it's worth I play all the games you mention on Vista 64 save GTA3. The only problem I had was the fucking copy protection on SC:CT that was unsuppoted. I hate bloody StarForce SO much. So yay for making me crack my own games you jerks!

Um, what I was trying to say is that I have no real issues playing any of those games. Though I may just be lucky.

All of those should work unless you have Vista 64 bit, in which case Chaos Theory doesn't get along with it. I run XP-64 and Chaos Theory does not work on 64-bit OS's. Unless the steam version fixed that issue that is.

I've never had a single problem running any game on vista 32-bit ever. If something doesn't work, run it as an admin and run it in compatibility mode for XP SP2. You could always google to see if games work on vista before you buy as well.

I'm using Vista, and I've had no problems running anything, with the exceptions of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time(This is because it has issues with Duel Core computers or some shit.) and really old adventure games, but a program exists to emulate them anyway.

Vista doesn't give me much trouble, but it seems to vary from person to person.

Fixed.

And the Orange Box works fine. Halo should too seeing as it's Bungie's, and they're part of Microsoft... The others should, but if you can get a demo first.

Max Payne doesn't work well on Vista. I ended up getting no sound and frequent crashs, Max Payne 2 works fine though.

XP is actually much better than Vista, and Vista was such an embarrasment. That's why they've been trying to make Windows 7 so quickly.

Though they should in theory still work.

I can vouch for Grand Theft Auto III because i've been playing that on Vista.

The others, i'm not sure, but a quick google search can usually help you out with which games are compatable and also help you find patches for those that don't to make them work.

Orange Box yes.

Halo CE, yes in theory but in practice it can be a little difficult. Halo CE's a pretty stable game so as long as you've installed/updated all your drivers first it should be fine.

Why would you want Vista? If it's what's on your PC when you get it fair enough, but it's nothing like as good as XP for games.

Why would anyone want to update to Vista? Windows 7 is out and is much better. Especially for games.

If you are not sure your PC will play them, just dual boot with an XP... but then you might as well uninstall Vista and make sure it doesn't block space on your HDD.
Windows 7 isn't out yet. It's in RC.

Release Candidate is basically a pre-retail. It's better than Vista at the very least.

You shouldn't have a problem getting them to run, I've had a few of those games working on Vista. However, I wouldn't recommend changing to Vista unless you have at least 4gb of ram. Vista requires much more memory initially, and only at 4gb does it get better than xp. You could also just wait for Windows 7
What he said. As long as your computer can handle vista it's great. Works great on my build.

Ive been a PlayStation gamer for years now, but I was pretty dissapointed when the PS3 port of the Orange Box came out with framerate issues, bad loading times and no-one playing TF2. and then the lack of Left 4 Dead on PS3 pushed me over the edge.

So im trying to get into the whole PC gaming thing, downloaded Steam and everything, and im currently using Windows XP (nostalgic!) but i wanna be sure i can continue to play once ive gone to university and ive got my own computer (with Vista). Basically, if I bought the following XP compatible games off of Steam or on a disc...

Grand Theft Auto III
Max Payne
Thief II: The Metal Age
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Beyond Good & Evil
City of Heroes
Halo: Comabt Evolved
Rome: Total War
Civilization IV
The Orange Box (Half-Life 2)

...would they all continue to work once ive upgraded to Vista?
Yes.

Vista has absolutely no problems whatsoever, as far as I know. I've used it for almost a year, and you'll realise that's quite an achievement since I spend a hell of a lot of time on my PC. Windows Vista has never troubled me, I had more problems with XP than I have with Vista in the same time frame. I really don't see why there's so much Vista hate, I've had nothing but good experience with Vista, and indeed with Microsoft in general.

As for the OP's question, yes they should all still work. I have several of those games which continue to work perfectly well on Vista, and as for the others, I've heard from friends and other testimonials that they do still work fine. I'm actually playing American McGee's Alice, a game released in 2000, and it has a minimum requirement of Windows 95, and yet it works brilliantly on Vista, so that should tell you all you need to know about the others. Since Vista is a faster and more advanced OS than XP, too, each game should be a lot quicker and smoother than playing on XP. That's what I've noticed with my games, at any rate.

I don't know. I'm stuck with XP too. But all my PC friends have told me Windows 7 is coming out soon, so I'd just wait for that.
