Well no of course not...they have the right to have game elements they like. Ethnocentrism (look it up) causes all sorts of problems.

"But the governments do have a role in trying to regulate this sort of extreme pornography of children"

Not only is it a rape game but apparently it's also kiddy porn.

Question - Can something really be considered pornography if there's no actual people in it?

Should Japan ban RapeLay because a bunch of stupid gaijin threw a ***** fit? No.

Should Americans collectively shut our fucking mouths and realize that the rest of the world views us the way the other kids on the playground view the asshole rich kid, as nothing but a source of cool toys to play with and otherwise not worthy of friendship?

HELL FUCKING YES.
Well said.

There are far more disgusting things going on in other cultures, and not in video games. The world is never going to be one single entity where everyone believes the same thing, acts the same way, and has the same views of what's acceptable. Never.

I like the bit where she says raping women and girls is unacceptable, it sounds like she's saying raping of men and boys is completely acceptable.

Not only that but it's funny :D. Name the number of times you've seen it uses as humor. Hell there are people who adamantly refuse to believe men can be raped.
Prison+ Dropped soap = male rape

CNN is really on its toes these days. What, did they send their journalist on a boat with only enough money to get to Japan, forcing him to work in Japan for enough money to stock up on food for the trip back?

To all the people who are complaining that CNN is late to the party needs to realise that the rest of world does not think about videogames constantly the way we all do. We are part of the video game culture. Judging other cultures based on their lack of knowledge about our culture is the very thing the OP is arguing against doing.

Nobody not in the "videogame wolrd' has any idea what rapelay is, so this story is worth telling on CNN even if it isnt breaking news to us.
That argument doesn't particularly fly with me. If you remember what happened when mass effect 1 came out and how the "sex scene" got talked about. causing plenty of controversy you would think that this game would have gotten attention at least when us gamers were throwing a fit on it not this late...

OT: honestly i find nothing wrong with it. if people living in japan want to play these games then let them play it.

I think I get your point except that Rapelay is an obscure Japanese only game where as Mass Effect was a popular American game. CNN's take on both stories is retarded but its wrong to think that the rest of the world cares or even knows anywhere near as much about video games as we do. Hell, videogames break sales records for all entertainment mediums and still can't get any respect.

What concerns me more than people having opinions about stuff on the other side of the planet is that a company dedicated to news is considering this newsworthy. I'd rather CNN (and the other stupid news companies) to look at their criteria for newsworthy events and up them by the bucketload.

Yeah, I wish people and news organizations in particular would stop making mountains out of molehills, especially where games are concerned. (this is HARDLY one of the worst things I've seen to come out of Japan, not even close)

All of these games carry an 18+ or whatever rating, so I see no problem here. Let Japan do whatever they want I say. America kinda owes them for y'know, those nukes and all. Its china we need to worry about!

If there is a game called "RapeLay" You'll know just by the name if you'll be offended or not.

Damn.

Somehow the real fact of all this culture of sexuality and fetishism kinda springs from the results of ATOMIC FUCKING WEAPONS being dropped on not 1, but 2 japanese cities 65-odd years ago.

With a genetic memory of that, it's not hard to see why the culture there is way far-out there in comparison with american culture.

I always think of Robin Williams whenever something like this gets brought up in any way shape or form.

"America was first colonized by the Puritans, who were people so uptight, the british kicked them out."

Me typing it isn't nearly as funny as him saying it is, but you kind of take my point.

Anybody here seen Cosplays? It's basic fetishism, but in an arena were you can act out and be applauded in public.

That section of the culture has already seeped into the Fandom arena.

It's strange to see people going on about something like this. Particularly when whenever one of these politicians or corrupt preachers/etc, etc, is outed publicly for sexual perversion, the kind of crap that's listed is like a laundry list of the content found in games/media of this type.

Makes you think, doesn't it?

Obviously I don't think anyone should release anything called RapeLay, but as the United States, we don't have ANY authority to tell Japan they can't, and thinking anything different is absurd. What we DO have the authority to do is not have it translated and brought here.

That said, whatever happens in Japan (that doesn't involve us being blown up by some sort of missle......that was a joke (thought I'd let all the political nutjobs out there know that)) does not concern the USA, live with it.

I resent that!

.....All the cool toys come from Japan, not the USA.

Wow, this is the most ignorant and irrelevant use of a "buzz topic" I've ever seen.

1.) How does Atomic bombs make your culture into kinky sex stuff

2.) Atomic bombs generally don't leave much of a "genetic memory" considering the fact that when you're hit with an Atomic Bomb YOU GENERALLY FUCKING DIE. (also, your whole idea of "genetic memory" is way off in the first place)

3.) you basically said "With a genetic memory of getting hit with a bomb (makes no sense yet) it's not hard to believe that the culture there is weird (hear that? A-bombs = kinky sex filled culture)" I think you're talking about a CULTURAL INFLUENCE, not genetic, which makes literally less than zero sense. That said, you'll have to show your work on how a bomb makes a culture turn to kinky fetishes, because I don't see the correlation.

4.) I don't even know what else to say, for those of you reading this, use point 4 as another chance to read the post I'm quoting, omg. I think the original poster was trying to say something like: "We have no right to interfere with Japan anymore, not after bombing two of their cities" or maybe he just recently learned about it in school and desperately wanted to apply it to something, but somewhere halfway through he gave up and just started mashing his palms onto his keyboard.

Yes this post is mean, but when someone posts something so ignorant onto a political (I consider this loosely a foreign policy matter) thread such as this, it drives me absolutely nuts. This is important stuff, and it is important to actually say something based on a shred of logic and evidence.

If you want my opinion on the OT, see my other post, but the short version is: "Japan is free to make whatever they want in their country"

EDIT: Actually, on my second read through, this post I'm quoting almost seems racist, as if he is asserting that the bomb messed them up so bad that they have a crazy deranged culture today because of the trauma, like the equivalent of a kid with a serious head injury.

You know, this is a stretch, but it IS possible that their culture is a result of normal means, and the USA doesn't have the only proper culture in the world. Tokyo has the least crime of any major city in the world (last I checked, the information is at least a few years old by now) so just MAYBE they're doing something right.

Games like this shouldn't exist at all, regardless of what culture they come from. Can you imagine what the game design process would have been like?

As for the current hype - OLD NEWS. You want controversy, catch up with the new stuff!
