As you say, it's all about the game.

RPG where personal choice changes the game (e.g. Mass Effect)? No.

FPS where flanking and combined maneuvers are of great help, and AI are next to useless in that regard (e.g. Modern Warfare)? Yes.

Gears of War? Yes.

Chaos Theory? Yes.

Assassin's Creed? Arguably no, but I would have a heart attack and die of love if they did it.

Playing games with friends is fun. Having them in the same room (when you're on the same side at least) is even funner.
How dare you repeat what I said!

... just kidding.

To add to discussion value: I especially appreciate that co-op has moved from simple multilayer to an engaging and 'different' experience. And I'm really looking forward to how BioWare will implement MP into whatever game they were hiring the Multiplayer person for. Maybe an individual co-op campaign set in the ME universe?

I'd hit it. Really.

Dude, the option to play a game with my best mate instead of an AI is a Godsend. I really don't understand why so many games that had the opportunity to put co-op in didn't, it's not like it's exceptionally hard to add it in (I mean ME2 could easily have been played with 2 more people instead of crew members - yes I would've played the game on my own on the side as well to see the interactions and stuff, but it's still fun to beat the game with a friend when you want to :) )

Particularly love games that feature snipers that give you the option of co-op. It's one of the reasons I loved MW2 so much, sneaking around with my mate timing takedowns is just brilliant fun :D

I don't understand the immense love for co-op campaigns. My friend often plays a game and will go "This would be better with co-op" and I have to disagree with him.

Especially on games like Metro 2033 or Mass Effect... These have strong singleplayer storylines. Adding a second person to dick around wouldn't make it more fun in my opinion.
I have to disagree there, Mass Effect would be pretty fun with a very stripped down co-op mode. Something akin to Sonic 2 co-op where the 2nd player is just along for the ride and can drop in and out.

OT: Of course co-op shouldn't just be tacked on. Co-op should always be well thought out, just like single player and multiplayer should be well thought out. When it's done right it's fun, but everyone can tell when it's just tacked on as an afterthought.

I think co-op campaigns have the potential to be really great. I remember me and a friend having the best time, sitting down and completing the halo 3 co-op campaign in one sitting (I think it was one sitting, I can't really remember).

Edit: Oh, and awsome times were had playing Graw 2 online splitscreen.

Co-op campaigns are my favorite thing, second only to 100% destructible scenery, in gaming.

Gauntlet: Dark Legacy with four people was the best gaming experience of my life.

Co-Op is a great thing that is often left out of games, sometimes I miss the old days of the only multiplayer is if you have 2 guys playing on the same machine.

I like Co-op. Offline co-op to me makes it more fun. This is what I think about co-op [http://www.starsmarathon.com/daniel-reviews/co-op-in-games] and this is what I think about AI partners [http://www.starsmarathon.com/daniel-reviews/friendly-ai-in-games] The two are related, in a way.

its not possible in every game

especially mass effect, OP, who the FUCK suggested that? i have never seen or heard that one before
One of my thick friends... he cares not about story or gameplay. He thinks every game would be better with co-op and he's about as uncultured as they come... we stopped listening to him awhile ago.

I love co op games. I've been wanting to play one for awhile now but lack the games.. and the friends. Timesplitters 2 would be my best example of a co op campaign, thinking about it makes me feel all fuzzy inside.

i looooove stuff that has co-op campaigns... when they make sense however, i still love the first 2 halos but they just added in another spartan to make it co-op whenever there was supposed to be 1 spartan left, but the 3rd game was great because they actually had a reason to make the game co-op. Borderlands, Gears of war, and halo all had great co-ops because they could make a good story and not be repeating characters.

and i have a question, what the hell was with the fable 2 co-op... it sucked!

I don't mind, as long as it isn't split-screen.

I fucking HATE split-screen.

But...I like splitscreen D:

I love games with coop, I really miss the days of good split-screen action. Hell, I was one of apparently few that liked Fable 2's multiplayer (other than the being a henchman thing) because at least it was some local coop in a crowd of online only products.

Yes, online is nice. But not everyone wants to pay subscriptions, not everyone has the consoles, and some people would much, much rather be playing with the other person next to them rather than having to use messaging or voicechat.

However, Mass Effect would not work with Coop tacked on. Only way it would is with some innovative re-design and major alterations to the game itself.
