co-op what game can't it improve

this is a question to point out that every game you can think of could be improved with a well added co-op mode especially if it's online so I challenge you to think of a came which would be less fun playing with your friends (it doesn't count if your friends are dicks). also what game would you like to see with co-op I would say bethesda and bioware games.

I'd love to have seen a Mass Effect 2 co-op mode while Player 1 plays as Shepard and you can get two chums to play as the teammates, though a problem would be if you had to play as a character you don't like however you could solve that being if you choose not to play as said character have it controlled by the computer as is the norm and have a 4 man squad.
It would also be cool for the suicide mission at the end while Shepard goes through the normal mission details and the buddies had to do their side of the mission and say if they got there first then they had to hold the Collectors off until Shepard completes his mission.

However I think such a thing would probably make Bioware put it as DLC rather than ingame material because it would be too fun.

Trying to survive with a buddy in a Survival Horror game could be great fun.

That's why Left 4 Dead is so popular. That's a fantastic survival horror co-op game.

pretty much what I think I should properly say what game can't be made more fun by co-op and I am playing through lara croft and the guardian of light at the moment and it's great fun and I love borderlands having racked up nearly 1000 hours of gameplay by now.

Also, I completely disagree about adding coop to the bethesda and bioware stable of RPGs. Its absolutely ludicrious to think that Mass Effect would be better with coop. You lose the ability to control your destiny... wait, it wouldnt even be YOUR destiny anymore, would it? Fallout or Oblivion with coop? Come on, you cant be serious.

If your playing partner was really, really cool, I could imagine Mass Effect co-op working out. Just imagine:
You're Shepherd and your buddy is Garrus. The two of you are storming a Geth base. You charge in with shotguns and biotic powers, blowing the Geth to pieces and launching them 20 feet in to the air. Meanwhile, your buddy Garrus picks off all of the targets you've thrown in the air, and saves your ass from the Geth trying to flank you. Finally, the Geth are all dead, and you find the main control center for the Geth in this system. You're about to pull the plug when a scientist appears. He tells you that if you just put them in a benign state, instead of destroying them, the Geth could be studied, and perhaps more lives could be saved. The camera shoots over to Garrus. Your buddy says through Garrus that you should just destroy the Geth, and it isn't worth the risk of them reactivating. The scientist argues that studying the Geth will save more lives in the end, and you agree. You decide to put the Geth in a benign state, pissing off Garrus (and your buddy).
This kind of co-op would be totally awesome, so long as you or your friend is willing to make suggestions instead of decisions. It wouldn't be the universe of one person anymore, but a shared experience between the two people. I think that this kind of co-op would really improve Mass Effect or any game like it.

Freelance already said it, but survival horror isn't as great story-wise with buddies. Also, Fallout is one of those games that everyone always says, "It should have Co-op."

I just don't feel that way. I'm the lone wanderer in the wasteland. Hearing fart jokes over my headset just isn't part of that.

OT: I dont beleive all game could benefit from it, ET would still blow, some strategy games such as age of empires has a coop thing where you cna both control teh same civ, thats hard, and most racing games wouldnt mkae sense to do it, unless its a team thing but still.

Idk, i kinda wish that there was coop in oblivion tho

You kidding? I could never have enjoyed it without co-op. It was exactly like watching a hilariously terrible movie with your mate. We were in hysterics for most of it.

Anyway, I reckon it would NOT help HL2, Assassin's Creed, Bioware games...quite a lot of games actually. Some are just meant to be played on your own; another person would detract from getting too deep into the experience.

Think GTA would do well having a co-op option; it's not as tight as the above options. I mean for the main game, not just the mp missions.

I'd say that RPGs are not improved by co-op, I don't need another person mucking up my world. Plus in many Western RPGs I like to talk to everyone, and I know some people would just be aching for action.

have it have mulitpal paths and the second person uses the map to try and figure out the best path (they would be in the car looking at a map of the entire race track rather then just a part of it.

First.. there should be..no...Mass Effect... coop. It would be a HUGE mistake. End of story.

Second, I have played L4D on expert, and beaten them. Yes, L4D is fun to play with others, and I suppose you could stick "survival horror" on it, but I dont call it that. Yes, it involves horror. Yes, you have to survive. But that isnt how *I* define survival horror. I define it as me, alone against whatever horrors and nightmares lurk in said village/forest/spaceship/whatever... trying to leave to see the light of day. Alone.

Personally, if you take that "alone" part out of the equation, it becomes more of a horror adventure type thing, because it is nowhere near as scary. L4D was fun, I enjoyed it, and when the horde would be charging, you would find you and your buddies clenching up a little bit. But there is a vast difference between that and the sheer FEAR I experienced while wandering around on a lonely, creepy, creaking, shuffling noise around every corner spaceship called the Ishimura. That... was survival horror.

more people means they can have more complex puzzles that need better player execution and therefore a bigger feeling of accomplishment (basically what they are going to do with portal 2)

only one player has to finish the level so one person could sacrifice them selves so another can jump of hem and save both players from doing half the level (something similar to what splosion man did)

I say this really come down to who you want to play with also if your friend goes in guns blazing you can still be hidden because he is drawing all the attention so people are less likely to notice you.

Your points are all valid, and yes they would defiantly lead to successful coop modifications of the games I mentioned, but they wouldn't be the same games any-more, they would feel and play so differently, and while they'd be good, would they be at-least as good or better than the original single player versions?

Your thread is called "Coop what game can't it improve?" this comes with the implication that coop should be in all games as it could make them better, but I don't think they would be better. They'd just be different. There are so many masterpieces that we wouldn't have been able to experience (because they'd have been drastically different if adapted for coop)

For me your statement, takes something which you like (coop) and assumes that because you like it, and because it could be made to fit any game, that it should be made to fit any game.

This is the same as me saying that "explosions are awesome, all film can be made better with more explosions", and then giving examples of how I could change popular films to feature explosions: eg I could rewrite requiem for a dream, so it feature a car chase, culminating in a massive bang as the petrol tank explodes. I' pretty certain that with enough work, that it could be made to fit, but it would change the tone of the whole movie.

I'll agree that coop can be pretty good, but it's by no means the be all and end all, and shoehorning it in to every game seems a little silly to me. There are plenty of game that could benifit from it as an option, but by no means all of them. Besides, if everything's coop, then what do you do 3 years after release, when no one wants to play it with you?

Actually, survival horror can be done very well with co-op. Just make a combination of Silent Hill and Saw. Two general dudes or gals could get captured (like they always do) or get separated in a scary complex. One person unlocks doors for the other and vice versa. But at the same time survive encounters with demons or whatnot who could herd you into rooms set with traps. Think something like each player starting in different ends of the Resident Evil 1 mansion. I mean Resident Evil Outbreak was good in atmosphere but bad in controls. Resident Evil Zero is a good example of a proper C0-op horror, not the best but damn close.

Ehhh, I still don't think it's as frightening if you're not alone. Too much chatting and joking is bound to go on. Not that I don't think the scenario you describe sounds like a bad game, but if I'm looking for a scary horror experience, I doubt it will be improved by having a partner beside me.

Depends on your friend then. If your friend knows you personally and has just bought the game as well, and you're playing through it together for the first time ever, you're both going to be on edge. Just as much as you would be on single player. Maybe a couple of jokes to ease the tension, but that'd just shit you up even more.

Um, thats pretty much how it goes down with the NPCs. Its scripted, and it plays out to give a desired effect. Your buddy is NOT going to be scripted like that. Nor will it be YOUR adventure. I cannot fathom how people cannot see this.

I hate to rain on peoples parades, but not all games need coop. In fact, in would downright ruin certain ones, Mass Effect being one of them.

Custers Revenge. I can't think of any mechanics that would save this title from the pits of the collective gamers conscience as something awful. Adding another person would only make it worse.

More importantly, I get where you're coming from. There are SO many titles I've said to myself "damn, I wish this was Co-Op"

-Far Cry 2, CoD4, Mechwarrior 3, all the GTA's (yes I know they actually did it in the latter ones, did it WELL is another matter), Oblivion and Fallout3, and this is just the start...
