ok, this is an idea I had for creating a co-op survival horror/other game where normally the fact you have a partner to back you up and accompany you would take away a lot of the fear, tension or atmosphere.

Assume the two characters have a method of contacting each other, basically a radio. and that's the only direct contact with each other for most, if not all of the game, with puzzles in one area having solutions or hints in the other, like one character mentioning a malfunctioning lock in one area gives the other the idea to get past their own trouble, or one having to use turrets to defend the other as they try to get through/wait for a door to open. So while the two are not there with each other, they are affecting each others progress.

I've had the same idea. I would play the shit out of a game like that. The sad part is it would be a very small market..

Would it be random strangers or people you knew?

If the former I'm almost certain people would be fucking each other over, or at least trying to.

So it's like Portal 2 Coop's first beginning stages. You know I consider that a good 1st stage considering it actually filters if the partner you have is a troll, incompetent, or actually good.

As for your idea. Sounds good and all if its the core gameplay of it all. Too bad it alienates single-player gamers like me.

That sounds interesting.
Particularly for survival horror, where the fact you can't see or communicate directly leaves many openings for a little mindfuckery.

Not going to lie, me and my buddy would try to fuck each other over. But that would be a fleeting thing, we'd definitely want to get in to the game and beat it properly... eventually.

well, to be honest, the idea originally came from wanting to do something like resident evil2 where you have two separate characters in the same space but seperate, and how you only bumped into each other briefly, or you were alerted to things by the other by radio. so you could pick a single character and play on your own, and the other character would pop in randomly (or in one of my examples you cover the AI with a turret/you try to get through the door while the ai covers you. So you have two different single-player experiences depending on who you pick, and a co-op experience with a simlar feel.
