Okay, well, this is getting a lot of attention now.
Joe Satriani is suing Coldplaly for plagiarism.
The two songs involved are Coldplay's Viva La Vida and Satch's If I Could Fly.

Let's have some opinions, shall we?

I personally prefer Satriani, but hell; everybody covers other bands (and their mothers, and their dogs). I don't think there's need to sue them.

I think Satriani may have a bit of a case, but it's not like you can copyright scales. Though with everything put together...it could go either way, honestly.

Edit:

True, but they usually get permission first.

I don't think Coldplay intentionally ripped off Satriani, but the two songs are remarkably similar and Satriani put his out first.

Personally I like Viva La Vida better because rock, mainstream or otherwise, needs more Orchestral Instruments in it.

That has no bearing on the case however, if Satriani is able to prove that they copied his work he is entitled to damages.

I am partial to Satriani, and I can understand a band wanting maybe wanting to sample a bit (assuming it wasn't incidental), but you've got to ask first. Especially when it's the freakin' Satch you're dealing with.

Surfing with the Alien rules! (not that i've got that out of my system)

I knew there was a reason that's the only coldplay song I like! I also have to say i really like how it sounds when they're mixed together.

Sounds very similar. Coldplay might be in a bit of a situation.

I reckon this could be a sneaky ploy by Joe to join Coldplay... The youtube vid is right. Sounds best mixed together!

That's true, but usually when one band covers another they still give the original artist the writing credits on the album.

Hell, long time dead composers still get credited if part of their composition is used by a band, and they've no chance of suing anybody, and even Traditional songs are credited when used, even though they've been in the public domain for hundreds of years.

The guitar dude should win because I dislike coldplay mainly because everyone else likes it and it gives me a chance to argue with girls :D
