As none of you probably remember I made a poll a while back asking about my college computer setup. I decided to go for a netbook and a desktop. Well I've graduated and my sister had to give me a check to be cashed later instead of a netbook (her dog was attacked and she had to pay vet bills, so pit bulls ate my netbook)

The check was for $300 and now that I have the freedom of choice I was wondering what the super tech savvy escapists would recommend. Since it's just an auxilary machine I really don't have a strong preference for specs, I'm willing to go a tad over budget but not much (I still have my main machine to buy after all!)

If you are going to college, I wouldn't recommend getting a desktop computer, unless you live in an apartment/house. Living in a dorm is a pain in the ass when you have a desktop.

OT: If you aren't looking for gaming on it, I'd just buy a standard netbook. The specs don't really matter. If you are getting a desktop, I'd check out newegg.com, where you can get a fairly good desktop computer for under $1000.

Radeon has given you some solid advice there. Don't go getting anything you can't keep safe. Desktops tend to be seen as public property in dorms, because they take up other people's space as well as yours. A laptop will be easier to carry about and, as a bonus, less likely to be stolen.

I can't really help as I don't know American prices and shops. Sorry.
The thought that you would help is what counts. Besides I don't know pound conversions, so the ignorance is mutual

I know I might catch a lot of flak for my decision, but looking at my habits and plans etc. I really do think a netbook and desktop combo would be best for me, space aside.
