Sup, escapist. Many of us either go to college, or are going to go very soon so let's put together a list of suggestions for freshmen just moving in.

Here's my advice. Step out of your comfort zone. Join clubs that you didn't have any interest in before. Go to parties even if you don't know anyone. Start randomly talking to people in the lunch room. Do this and do it quickly. Pretty soon groups of friends will form and making friends will be that much harder. Also, unless you have some sort of moral objection to alcohol or marijuana, try them out. These are great ways to meet new people and I guarantee you will not regret trying it. This is all assuming you're one of those normal humans that like having friends. If you're more like maxthereaper and despise people in general, then ignore everything I just said.

Live in the dorms, a lot of people try and live in an apartment near the college. But that really cripples the college experience.

This is true. If you are a commuter then you need to try even harder to get anything at all out of the college experience. It can be done but it's more trouble than it's worth. Live in the dorms, at least for your freshman year.

Don't fool around with a girl who has a boyfriend. All I learned so far in my 4 weeks of college.

This is probably unorthodox advice, but it's coming from someone who worked full time through undergrad.

- 3.0 GPA is OK, as long as you've got some kind of experience to talk about when applying to grad school
- Work a bit. Not waiting tables, either. Do something useful. I picked a job that was directly related to what I wanted to do after graduation.
- Volunteer a bit.
- Stay away from the booze. I get to see it kill dreams and dissappoint parents every day at my University. (It's a party school.)

Arguably, my "college experience" was not all that, but I've also got a huge lead on a killer job, largely due to the fact that my resume reads like I graduated awhile back. To me, the whole point of college was to get the jobby-job.

The Army will pay for your college, don't dismiss them right away because you are still an angsty kid.

As for alcohol... I don't want to sound like a stickler but it's not the smartest thing to do, especially if you are trying to get into a more prestigious job afterwards.

If you feel the "need" to drink, just be smarter than your average bear on this one. House parties over thirty people almost always get busted, and dorm drinking with five or more people have equal amount of success. DUIs blow, there is always of DD on hand, though sometimes they want a "tip."

I know most of you are thinking that you are WAY too mature to hear this, but this is your first chance to actually be considered an adult. Act like one.

not much of an advice but an observation

in high school and previous the most respected guy are the coolest, stronger, more wealthy kids while the smartest kids are bullied and mocked.

in college the tables even a little bit, the other guys keep being respected but the smart guys are respected as well, even more than the others in the last semesters.

-Drink smart, not hard: I know getting fucking drunk sounds good. However, you can look like a complete fool.

-Study a lot: Long term memory is the key for good grades. Trust me, you can't afford to have a bad note.

-Beat that shy guy (Or girl): Don't be shy. You're just denying your life.

-Be a Yes Man: Say Yes to every situation possible. Do keep your mind on your studies though.

-Learn some skills: There's not only studies. You can learn new skills like cooking and other stuff.

-Mind your money: College ain't cheap. Buy with low prices. Just don't be an impulsive buyer.

-Try something new, join a sport or society you've never done before. I did and some of my best friends were met through it

-Have a water or at least long drink (ie. pint or wine spritzer) every other drink. it's cheaper and your less likely to get drunk really fast and lose control. also drink at least a pint of water just before bed

-If your in halls be careful about dating someone you live with. sure it might work for a bit but if it goes pear shaped you have another 7 months of living under the same roof

-don't try and reinvent yourself as somebody else. you cant act as a different person for 3 years of study, don't try and get people to like you, not the persona you think they will like

-Take good notes in lectures. If you don't understand something right away then good notes will save you life

-Alka-seltzer and a can of energy drink (relentless for choice) makes a massive difference to your hangover next day

-eat proper food and don't blow ALL your cash on alcohol. freshers flu is horrible and is basically a constant hangover mixed with malnutrition

Ah, I see this applies mostly to American schools, with such things as GPA, dorms, parties within the college, etc.

In that case, all I can say is study hard, drinking with the goal of getting drunk means you're an idiot, and academics come in first, then your stupid girlfriend.
