Let's get one thing straight: I have not gone to college yet. I have no idea how college works or what kind of things go on within it. However, I do know that it is usually seen as a means to get higher education and, sadly, a way to get MO MONEY FO YO BITCHES, and moar partying and to explained 4chan.

Let me explain myself: College predating modern times was always seen as a way to further yourself in your intellectual endeavors. However, as time went on the potential of getting a higher paying job started to worm its way into the popular consciousness, more and more people started going to college just "for the money" and now most public colleges for the most part treat every student the same and you can't go anywhere on cable without escaping commercials for ITT tech or DeVry or something else. It just feels like getting a college degree is just another statistic of the sheeple.

Let me use another colon phrase: I'm just distraught on the whole prospect of College if all I'm gonna get is just Middle School 3.0 (If you consider High School 2.0).

I'd say this is pretty off base. You go to college to get specialized training for whatever field you chose to pursue. Also, not all people even go to college for jobs, but rather for the love of learning and trying new things. I can't see how anybody could possibly have a problem with it, barring the high prices of some schools. Don't know why you are so bitter over something you haven't even done, and something you have no idea about. And, as far as "sheeple" go, only about 5 percent go to college, so you'd actually be a "sheeple" by not going.

I would, however, like to see less crappy college ads on my television.

I'm graduating on Friday actually, I know whopidee do! :) personally I don't think it sucks, you truely are just cattle in the eyes of the school though but that didn't really bother me. I learned some stuff (I'm a history major so it makes games like Fallout 3 and Bioshock a little more interesting) but it was pretty much just a yawn within my life. Its over now and so I'm gonna keep on keepin on.

college/university differs in every country in germany, netherlands and belgium they have a nice pre selection. basically "highschool" is divided in multiple levels ranging from gymnasium to wuts a dynamo lolz. same goes for Uni.

College is great try it and run away if you don't like it. also the kind of study will greatly influence difficulty...

Well, can't speak for college but university isn't that much like high school.
I mean, sure, you'll still sit in a room (with about 150 others) listening to some older guy explaining things but...
You learn something that interests you (you chose the subject).
You learn to be more independent (because nobody comes running after you to push this stuff down your throat if you didn't go to the lesson).
You learn to think for yourself (because you'll have to order your life yourself and scrutinize the things they teach you).
Of course, getting a better job later and earning more money is a part of it.
But why do it do it? Because of the money?
No, because I want to be able to get a job that I'll actually enjoy.
It isn't so much about money but about what interests you.

Asher Roth might have something to do with it. So does not applying to any schools.

Wait, you haven't gone to college, so how can you have an opinion about it...? I've been through this whole thing just earlier today; you can't know 'till you experience it.

Really, though, college nowadays is the middle class's extreme high school.
True higher education is to be found in graduate programs and specialized schools.

And anyway, you'd be below the average sheeple if you were to not go to college, by your logic.

I do believe I spelled this out in the OP.

College is a four year waiting list to be allowed to apply for "good" jobs. The only usefulness is in scientific endeavors (engineering medical etc)
The rest could be learned (much better) in internship style programs or freaking Google.
EDIT: first two years of school is just a repeat of high school. math science history, arts, english comp 1-2-sophmore lit.......

Usually, the ones interested in money for bitches are the ones that get drunk all the time and drop out. At least where I am, the resemblance to high school vanishes once you get into upper division classes.

I dunno what "MO MONEY FO YO BITCHES" means if not "a path to a higher-paying job," but if that's the case it's a stretch to see what's wrong with that. When, exactly, was college not a place for maintaining or improving social status? Never, that's when. The only time that college wasn't there for people to gain access to high-paying jobs was when it was only available to the aristocracy anyway.

I also fail to see what's wrong with partying. Yeah, there's a few morons who do nothing but get shitfaced a few times a week, but they'd be doing that regardless of whether they were in college. Besides, partying is fun, and if you're looking down on people that like to hang out and have a few drinks, I can only assume it's because you don't have enough friends to try it out for yourself.

Finally, it's not all about getting more money later on. If it was, several of my friends wouldn't be student loaning themselves into oblivion. It's about studying something you enjoy and are passionate about, and it's about a unique social experience. College is a truly great time with the right friends and the right attitude.

I'd also point out that ITT Tech and DeVry are hardly real colleges.

EDIT: My university experience has had about as much in common with my high school experience as with my pre-school experience. (Which is to say, very, very little).

I hate to iterate age-old adages that have been shoved down my throat more times thans fucking dicks on roller skates, but quite honestly college is what you make of it. The quality of your education is based, on one hand, the quality of the teaching, but on the other hand, and more importantly, you willingness to learn. Christ, I go to a state university that treats its students like cattle. And amidst the milieu of shit and apathy, I can still find dozens fucking amazing teachers, who care about my education.

You can go to college to have a fucking hell of a time partying, get a degree, and enter the workforce with a decent job that'll pay a living wage. You can go to college solely as a means of economic advancement. Or, you can go to college seeking enlightenment and knowledge. Really, it's up to you. Whether you go to a Harvard or Oxford, or just a local community college, what you get out of college is incumbent on your choices.

College isn't about earning a larger income for me. All the things I'd like to do with my life will potentially bring me zero money (I'm getting a degree in English currently and would like to be a writer). Higher education is just that to me; a way of furthering my education and studying the the subjects I am actually interested in. I love being able to explore interests that were never touched on in high school. And yeah, I will most likely have to work a second job when I graduate to support myself, but I'd rather do what I like and be happy than do something I hate just to become rich.

This. I went to college for a year, and though I wasn't cut out for it (too much laziness/procrastination to make it through the year), I was at least glad it wasn't like how they portray college on TV.

At least, not exactly like it.

1: get good grades
2: apply to a good college
3: laugh at the idiots in the state college
That's how you avoid High school 2.0. Also, wait till you go to college before judging it. (and college is still only a normal part of life for middle class people, so be happy).

No, those colleges don't have a high idiot to student ratio, I'm talking about schools like UC San Bernardino that everybody and there brother goes to. There are a lot of people there who aren't very serious or are just doing high school 2.0.
