Now the subject is fairly narrow, as I didnt want anything too long.

Disclaimer!
I apologise if this overlaps with any previous topics. If the mods don't take notice then I don't think you should either. The first person to say "use the search button" shall be labeled mentally defective. Thanks.

The specific issue being that people complain about 'realistic' looking games being filled with lots of browns and greys.

I have yet to see any game in which I think that there is an excessive or rampant use of dull colours. Generally all the games that I have played recently have had settings that fit into their supposed 'world', and all of these settings had appropriate colours. Yes there is a lot of brown and gray in some of them, for example Fallout 3.

My point is that if the 'world' and setting in which the level is placed would logically have a lot of concrete for instance, then you will have a lot of grey in the level. People don't tend to paint walls bright pink in an industrial site, why? Because it doesn't make any sense.
Yes you do get things like the yellow stripes etc. In an industrial site, which is usually done in a fair depiction in modern games.

For a game to continue the immersion of the player it needs to make immediate sense. Having lots of brightly coloured objects that catch your eye in a shooter like Call of Duty 4 is only going to frustrate you, because you will naturally look at the brightest distracting objects first, and miss that bloody sniper that has been waiting for you.

Buildings do not tend to be bright orange. Grass often has patches missing, under which is (omg no way) this brown stuff called dirt. To mantain immersion you must have something that the player expects to fit within a location, within that particular world setting.

The real world has plenty of Gray, and Brown, so if you want a realistic game you had best get used to it.

As long as there is never a Call of Duty 7: The Wrath of Ballamory, there will never be a brightly coloured FPS that is trying to be realistic. If you want bright coloured FPS then I would recommend something like Team Fortress 2.
My understanding is that there are lots of greys and browns in Fallout 3 (I've never played it) because it's been nuked? Most things don't tend to be bright pink after they've been nuked.
Although some things might turn a neon green.

But yeah, I would agree that people need to put a sock in it and accept that greys and browns are realistic. If you want picture perfect views then go play oblivion.

The idea is not to put random colours in for the hell of it, but to design games so that their environments justify better use of the colour palette. For example, there's a level in Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a realistic shooter but its setting (casinos, climbing gyms, etc) justifies the use of extensive colour.

Another example would be Mirror's Edge, it had a very different colour scheme. The point is that a lot of games seem to fall into the whole "post apocalyptic/abandoned city" category, with the result being a fucking lot of brown.

I hear there are colours in rainforests, these places supposedly also have a large amount of soldiers.
Who would have figured?
That comes down to the setting of the game, if its in a rainforest and its grey and brown there is an issue, however as long as the colour pallete suits the environment there isn't an issue in my mind.

I think that the point you're missing is that people don't like the idea that shooters that are always set in a place where there is a lot of brown and grey. They should be set somewhere original with lots of color, like a tropical jungle(which some that are noted for their scenery do). Also, color! Color, color, color! (Just to mess with ya').

But that's just it, the world is mostly Blue, Yellow, Red, Green and Brown.

Even in urban areas there's a lot less flat grey than people think, most tarmacs are a blue-ish shade rather than the black/white constructed greys most games use. That annoys me intensely because it shows how lazy the devs were being in their designs, if they sorted the colours properly even an entirely urban war game would not just be sewage brown and battleship grey.

I really don't care how the game appears in terms of grey/brown as long as it doesn't overdo it I tend not to notice
