I just stumbled upon this video on Youtube.

Now I've never played Serious Sam but having watched this I want it - not just for the gameplay, which looks amazing, but for the whole atmosphere.

Just look at all those gorgeous, bright colours - the manic, hilarious carnival music... why can't more shooters look and sound like this?

I never really got the anti-grey and brown thing until now. I just kinda thought, well that's the way shooters are. But this game has kinda changed my perspective a bit and I'd like to know what you guys think.

Would you like to see more shooters take on crazy, lunatic, fun colour schemes?

Or are you a fan of the more subtle, realistic greys and browns that dominate modern shooters?

You know what's worse? Here's Serious Sam 3:
Browness hoooo!!!

Seriously though, it's a damn shame if the game is really going to be like that. I hope that trailer doesn't completely represent the game. Serious Sam always had such a fun variation in environments. I need that game to be good after Duke's failure.

Anyway, yeah I prefer shooters that have an interesting colour scheme, whether realistic or clearly fictional. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for example, while being in the 'realistic' league of shooters it had a lot of variation in colours and styles.

But I must admit that in the end, each game has it's own style. Each game wants to create it's own atmosphere, and while Gears of War isn't all that colourful, I never would've picked a different colourscheme for it.

The fact that you see it more though is that more and more shooters want to go for the serious, gritty feel. The trend is noticable throughout gaming, not just shooters, and others as well. Just look at most modern fantasy works, all dark and bleak.

Get it. Get both the First and Second Encounters, and then get Serious Sam 2. Quality games.

Anywho, yes, I'd love for there to be more games nowadays that use a colourful colour scheme. It seems too many games are going for the realistic brown/grey crap. It's fine in some cases, I certainly wouldn't want CoD or Gears of War to be all shiny and colourful, but it gets out of hand when every bloody game does it.

And that Serious Sam 3 video fills me with a bit of concern.

That gameplay video looked absurdly fun. It reminded me of Unreal Tournament 2004... I want to play it now >.>

I may get this game.

On one hand, I'm all for games bringing back the vibrant colour palettes of old.

On the other hand, look at something like Bioshock. It was brown and grey, but those dashes of colour gave it such a fantastic style.

However, I think we are slowly moving away from the trend of grey/brown. Borderlands, Fallout New Vegas, Bioshock Infinite. Slowly but surely, developers are discovering colours again =)

Bioshock didn't have much brown as I recall... lots of green and blue maybe? Anyway, it was certainly unique looking either way.

According to an interview with Croteam, they picked colours by going to the real world locations and getting reference photos, then matched the colour in game. I would imagine the different locations and more fantastic elements of the full game will provide the colour variation we all want and hope for.
