My daughter is addicted to reading books and I'm starting to get concerned. When she's reading, she completely zones out and I can barely get her attention. It's like she's in another world. It's not until I put my hand in the way of the book that I can get her attention. It's a compulsion that lasts all day. She gets upset when she has to stop. If I leave her alone for even a minute, the next thing I know she's reading again. I'm concerned that she's losing touch with reality because she spends so little time in the real world.
So. She's reading, she learning. There's nothing wrong with her escaping into a book.
I disagree. Unless she's reading nonfiction she probably isn?t going to learn much from reading like that. I myself used to be obsessed with reading and I would say I only learned something every couple books, and then it would be something trivial, like what Ockham's razor is. Fiction isn?t really any better than videogames once you?re good at reading, its just habit from when we weren?t good at reading and our parents were encouraging us to read that tells us there is nothing wrong with it. Anything is excess is bad.
What? The more you read the more you pick up on the english language. It helps you to speak and write.

Games, Movies, Music, Books all improve on your imagination. And last I checked, it's not a bad thing to have.

"Videogames take what is most precious - time and thought. And they are making kids fat. Did I mention that far too many videogames celebrate graphic violence, multifarious delinquency and borderline pornography?...This Christmas, do the poor kids of all economic levels a favor: Don't buy them videogames."
I just find that adorable. It's so cute the way he lumps everything together like that. Simply precious.

I'd like to thank EQ and WoW for bringing full meaning to the "Gaming Ruins Lives" ideal.

Also the Father obviously has no self control for not realizing "Whoops, grades are down, better stop playing the rainbow game".

English isn't my first language, but I received full marks for all English exams. Why? Because I read, watch movies and play video games. I wasn't supposed to know what polymorph meant until a couple of grades later.

Video games and Magic: The Gathering also greatly improved my math skills. Ive done calculations the maximum damage with a given amount of mana that would have stumped my math teacher.

On the other hand, my friend skipped college for a year because his clan had him train for the Splinter Cell championship.

I guess it's all about background, self-control and priorities.

In other words: What Erin said, but without the good writing and with some different examples.
