COMBAT!

I see a lot of reviews, and talk a lot with my friends about game (duuuuuuh I am at the escapist). What I always seem to hear is "the combat sucks". I understand why. It is not easy to make an intuitive, easy to jump into, and at the same time varied combat system, but games are about sort of realising your dreams, right? And most of my dreams (at least from when I was little) revolves around kicking uncanny amounts of ass, so combat games are vital for gamers!

What I would like to get at here is that I know that after the MANY attempts there has to be at least one game with a good combat system. And I would like to get such a game. So, basiclly what I am looking for is a recommendation for a good combat game.
And let me say this right away, fighting where to characters fight each other in a largly 2-d plane i not my kind of game, so street fighter and Tekken can go eat a fat one for all I care.

Things I would like you to consider before you recommend:
1) I haven?t really gotten into the current generation of games, as the only current generation consol in my household is a wii. Therefore, I can only play games on Wii, PS2 and PC. Highly doubting that the wii has a good fighting game, but I'll at least take a look at what people recommend, but I am mostly hoping for ps2 and PC.

2) There are many classics which I haven?t played yet. Games I have wanted to play, but games I haven?t played yet. God of war is just one example of such a game.

So please, bring me out of despair and show me a golden jewel of a game with fighting in it. I don't care if it is one-on-one or if it is ?path of neo? style of game play, just give me something good!

Thanks in advance ;)

Mad World on the wii is getting some good reviews, try that for a choppy shoot combat game. Otherwise I liked CoD4, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fable and Diablo 2's combat.

Diablo may be old but it's 15mb and great fun.

MORTAL? Had to do it sorry. (MORTAL COMBAAAT, get it?)

Anyway, Ninja Gaiden (2) has a really cool combat system. Hard, yes, extremely hard, but if there is one skill-based combat game, it's that one.

CoD4 was at least functional (probably not exceptional though) in terms of it's combat and the fighting in Oblivion and Fallout 3 felt rigid and awkward (like the NPC's, dialogue and the rest of the gameplay).

Examples of games that I thought had excellent combat are:

Drakengard (it was simple but effective), Dead Space (you were somewhat overpowered but it was still pretty good), God of War (need I say more?) and the Original Unreal Tournament (again, it was simple but effective).

If you want a beat-em-up I'd have to recommend Soul Calibur - personal preference would be for number 2 for the Weapon Master mode (best single player I've seen in a BEU) and reasonable character balance.

If you're into FPS, try CoD4 for ass-kickery, Team Fortress 2 for some fun, and CS for competitive play.

I agree with Iron Mal about the RPGs like Oblivion and Fallout 3; the combat is generally clunky, and not the main reason you're playing the game.
