Does anyone else get knocked completely offline when they try to DL torrents and such? Didn't they just lose a major court case over this? I'm seriously considering becoming a rougue wifi bandit. I may even wear a mask when I'm stealing bandwith, just to add to the effect.

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand. Your ISP is cutting your connection because you download a torrent?

I haven't heard of any court case either. Maybe I've been living under a rock...

The FCC moved against Comcast after receiving complaints that the company had interrupted P2P traffic in violation of the agency?s August 2005 Internet policy statement, which lists various consumer rights on the Internet.

Martin himself said at the time the policy statement was adopted that it was not a rule that could be enforced. The statement also contained an exception from reasonable network management practices.

In its ruling, the FCC insisted it has the authority to enforce the policy statement and stated a number of reasons for concluding that Comcast?s laser-like focus on P2P applications was not a reasonable network-management practice.

The FCC?s action was cheered by groups that initiated some of the complaints against Comcast.

?The FCC?s bipartisan decision to punish Comcast is a major victory,? Free Press executive director Josh Silver said in a statement. ?Defying every ounce of conventional wisdom in Washington, everyday people have taken on a major corporation and won an historic precedent for an open Internet.?

Comcast and BitTorrent reached an agreement in March on network-management issues, a sign of progress that should have kept the FCC on the sidelines, said Barbara Esbin, senior fellow and director of the Center for Communications and Competition Policy at The Progress & Freedom Foundation.

the wifi bandit I imagine being a villain sidekick rather than a main villain but I still see a costume somehow.

I never heard of it happening with Comcast, we have Charter where I'm at and they are relentless, they've been know to slow down your speeds, cut off your service, and they even sent me kind of a "cease and desist" letter, saying I had to get rid of all downloaded files and file sharing programs on my computer. All for downloading an episode of "Real Time with Bill Maher" that I didn't have a chance to watch after work under my 15 dollar a month HBO subscription.

Comcast is useless. I've lost my connection for several weeks at a time, and it will drop at random intervals at least twice a week. The P2P issues are not helping either.

I have no problems with Comcast, other than the time my modem self-destructed and it took the "technicians" about an hour before they tested with another cable box, rather than doing the semi-intelligent thing and testing that first. Also get knocked off for maybe two minutes each month.

Is this because Comcast is having problems hosting WoW? you can tell me I can keep a secret. And, no, I don't have that problem

Were you downloading something illegal? If so then you can't complain when they cut off your service...

I sure can, it is not their place to monitor my traffic, it is the same thing as the phone company listening to your phone calls and upon hearing something offensive or whatnot they just decide to hang up your call. Fear not though your bill will still be coming in its bloated past-intro-offer form.

There's a difference between offensive and illegal. Your ISP can be liable if you violate intellectual property laws with your connection, they have every right to deny you service if you misuse your connection.

Actually I USED to be disconnected and throttled when DL torrents. Now my speeds on torrents are insanely fast compared to what they used to be. I used to get 100 KB max out on my cable connection with Comcast while DL torrents. Now I get up to 750 KB+. Depends on how many seeds there are of course, but on average the speeds are awesome. Comcast stopped throttling just torrent programs in October. Instead they instituted the 250 GB max download amount per month. If you go over once they send you a letter saying that you are on probation. If you go over again you get cut off for life.

I used to work for Charter, and I can neither confirm nor deny that they do that

The best thing to do if you're using a torrent is to use an IP anonimizer (sorry for the spelling, running out the door). They'll never be able to trace back to you...well, they will, but it'll take FOREVER!

EDIT:

You should add that to the real life achievements thread!

Uh, yes he absolutely fucking well can. Comcast has no idea whether or not he was downloading illegal files; he was just using BitTorrent, which is 100% legal, and is only going to grow as media providers start to embrace the internet instead of fighting it tooth and nail. If Comcast could prove that he was downloading something illegal, then yes, they can say "that is not an acceptable use of our network" and shut it down. All Comcast knows is that there's traffic going through a port that is often used by p2p programs. He could be downloading a pirated movie, yes, or he could be downloading free online programming from the BBC, or he could be downloading a patch for World of Warcraft, or he could be downloading any number of other completely legal things. Comcast has no right to infringe on his ability to perform actions that are 100% legal.

Comcast is the worst cable provider in the history of people providing cable. The On Demand choice sucks, and nine times out of ten, it'll cut off halfway through the movie (If you can even get it loaded in the first place without getting a stupid "One Moment Please" screen for 20 minutes followed by a text saying you cant watch it, because they're having technical difficulties.) Half the time MSNBC, CNN, and USA will lag on my digital cable box worse than Crysis on my Dad's Pentium 2. The internet likes to randomly cut off from time to time. And last but not least, they charge more than any other cable company I've ever had.

Unfortunately for me, they've strong-armed the competition out in my area, so there's no alternatives, save DSL.
