Comic Book Canons

Recently, I've started reading a lot more graphic novels and comic books than I used to and I'm getting more into the stories. However, I'm starting to get a little confused.

How the hell do these stories all fit together??!!

I was reading through a few of the Batman GNs I own, and I was just thinking if any of these lead into one another or if they have any connection at all.

The same goes for the Spiderman books I'm reading. I've gotten a few spin offs and one shot comics, and I love all of them, but my brain is about to explode. With all the limited series and main story arcs, I can't figure out what's canon and what's not.

Anyone with the same problem or am I just retarded?


Also, any help with the real Batman story would be greatly appreciated.

Well most comics dont follow on from each other to create like 2000 comic special. They're split into different comics. For example Catwoman may be the main enemy of one series of comics and Penguin another (Taking Batman as an example here).

No. I can't expect much logic from a story where the main villain fell into a vat of chemicals that bleached his skin and gave him a permenate smile. Or how someone can still live after having half of the skin on their face burnt off.

True. Spiderman's logic is pretty wacky compared to Batman. At least there's some sort of realism when it comes to Batman. I love Spiderman and Marvel though

You will get the hang of it all after a while, then you will bore people shitless with your knowledge, like I do with Marvel... just hang in there!

That's already happened to me.

God I'm so nerdy. I compared a 25 year old woman (I'm 15 and she doesn't know) flirting with me at BooksAMillion to the time in Ultimate Spiderman when Black Cat threw up out of embarassment when she found out Spider Man was really a 15 year old kid.

It doesn't really matter, and you will kinda get the gist of things. But to be honest, it's not worth reading up on. You can ignore anything before about 1986 for DC because after Infinite Earths they kinda started over...but there is ALOT. I mean there's about ten (maybe more) X-men titles in print at anyone time.

If you want a general synopsis of Marvel in a "story" format, I recommend Earth X, Universe X (1&2) and Paradise X (1&2). It gives a fairly broad sweeping (if convoluted) look at the Marvel Universe...though I gave up trying to follow things after that and just started reading comics as stand alone, unless they were by the same author.
