so I was in my local comicbook store today and I overheard a cumstomer and the guy discussing the state of Vertigo

for those who arent familiar with comics Vertigo is a brand owned by DC, their thing being "adult" oriented comics that arent part of the DCU

the main thing here being the (seemingly recent) resignation of the head of Vertigo, and you may remember not to long ago I think Hellblazer was ending and John constantine was headed to the DCU.Many of the onging series have ended,he mention some had been cancled...a few new-ish one like "Saucer Country" werent doing as well as they hoped (which is a shame because I recently read volume 1 and I REALLY liked it)Fables being pretty much the main thing keeping them afloat

the comic book guy also mentioned they were going to do a big push for vertigo stuff in 2013, with some notable names doing sci fi stuff (I really like sci fi) he even speculated marvel could buy vertigo but who knows...

Any this news really upsets me, Vertigo was pretty much the reason I started reading comics when I first realised "oh...so its nto all suprheros?" V for Vendetta, Transmetropolitan,[footnote/]though I'm not sure those two started out under vertigo[/footnote] Preacher (PREACHER!!!) are some of the titles that got me into it

I mean there needs to be a niche for adult stuff...schlock is nice but we all need quality don't we?...I don't read superheros, I like to know theres always somthing I'll be able to read

and I don't want saucer country to get cancelled *sob*

so yeah...what do you think? if theres anyone that knows the situation better than I do please explain

What what WHAT?!

This the first I've heard of it, and I really hope that if it true then someone will get them because I love Vertigo. I will forever love them for doing the reprints of The Sandman and for Preacher, and I now has a sad.

Maybe Marvel will pick them up since Vertigo could do some really cool things with some of the Marvel characters, like Thor, but now I'm getting a head of myself and me dreaming of someone doing an awesome Thor story...

Goddamn this sucks. :(

I don't know too much about it, but does it necessarily mean that the Vertigo comics will stop production? Seems like Vertigo got its start when comic books were going through their "see? it's not all kids stuff!" phase, and the imprint was needed for branding purposes. The stigma doesn't really exist anymore, so I could easily see this stuff just being rolled into DC proper without any real change other than the name at the top of the company letterhead. Not necessarily into their comic universe, but the publisher would be DC instead of Vertigo (a DC property).

eeewwww....I don't want super heros in my "grown up" comics...

seriously though part of the apeal is that they are free from all that superhero BS, no offence to supes though, it would be nice for marvel to buy them (hopefully unchanged)

we don't know for sure yet...as he mentioned I think they are gonna try and push new comics

I do see what you mean but isn't branding still a factor? isn't there a thing where you can;t having somthing under the DC brand unless its in the DCU? having to exist in a shared universe just strangles originality/creativity IMO

I also don't know about restrictions on content, I don't like cencorship

Well, I was leaning more towards they could do some cool things with established characters and not make it so super hero-y like DC tends to do, and there are some really morally ambiguous characters under Marvel that could have awesome stories. I just picked Thor because I really like him. >.> <.<

They could still potential still do their own thing under Marvel, but a girl can dream, right?

That's what I'm saying, though: why does it necessarily have to be within the same universe? When it comes down to it, DC is a publishing company. They've got a very large stable of characters that all exist within the same universe, plus a ton more that fit into a connected multiverse, but they've also done stuff that doesn't connect to any of it. For example, they at least used to make Star Trek comics. I can guarantee you those aren't a part of the larger DC universe. This hypothetical situation would be the same thing.

Captcha: ShinglesInfo.com

Why on earth is there such a big push for shingles awareness lately? Is there some new preventative drug out or something? I can't think of any other reason for the glitzy ad campaign talking about how anyone who has had chicken pox (that's pretty much everyone) is most likely carrying the virus that causes shingles around in them. Which makes sense, since it's the same bloody virus.

well I was under the impression that everything under the DC brand HAD to be un the DCU as some kind of policy, also the guy mentioned somthing about WB or the higher ups being difficult but I dont know... weve clearly come a long way from the comics code anyway

Hooray! :D

I can just imagine Vertigo being on life support right now, and I find that image very upsetting.

I will say, Vertigo is one of the few comic book companies out there that will do something new and fun to read, outside of Image of course.

*cough*The Walking Dead*cough*

Then there's Top Cow, and I'm not really sure how I feel about them. :/

Still, I really do think that Vertigo can be saved because they have way too many comics under them and some really good talent to just go away and never be seen again, like Preacher.

Lock and Key is by IDW, and they're another company that I think is doing pretty well.

They're the main Transformers comic publisher, and they've done some G.I. Joe comics that were pretty good, and I will forgive them for doing those God awful Silent Hill adaptations.

Darkhorse is hit or miss with me, they've done some awesome comics, like Hellboy, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but they're few are far between with me. They have published some manga that's pretty good.

Heart is another good comic my Image that I highly recommend.

I should just get stuff that looks interesting, I got Saucer country purley because it looked interting and I enjoyed it very much

I also got a random trade paperback called The Tower Chronicals and it was incredibly dumb...

It's basically about an MMA fighter, but the story and artwork are fantastic and it's not that long of a read.

I agree on Saucer Country, I didn't think I'd like it, but so far it's pretty good.

have you heard of stitched? by Garth Ennis he did the first 7 issues anyway... its horror, suposed to be on-going though I'm not sure I feel like continuing the seres since the charachters I knew arcs finished up by issue 7 (excpet for one guy who I'm sure will come back) kind of a downer...since Ennis is incredibly good at making you care about charachters..

yay for thread bumping!

Hmm...can't say I have.

But I've been pleased with what I've read from Garth Ennis thus far, so I will have to check that out when I get the chance.

Thread bumping?

More like thread derailing, and I think I caused it. >.>

First of all; I can confirm that V for Vendetta and Transmetropolitan didn't start under Vertigo. Secondly, I agree; sucks doesn't it? Vertigo has given me some of the best memories of my life. Way better than anything else that's happened in my life, including anything I did with my ex-girlfriend. Love? Who needs that when you've got comics?

kind of like wildstorm....(that was DC too wasn't it?")

it actually annoys me to no end that comics in general have to be surrounded by all this continuity and superhero bullshit, it seems so unessicary
