Heres the deal.
I live in a part of the word where comic book stores just don't exist.
I am a huge nerd therefore i watch a lot of movies. play a lot of video games. Get super excited whenever any screen shot of diablo 3 is released etc. One of the films i recently saw was watchmen (Loved it). Anyways after i saw the film i decided to use online subscriptions to get comics. Only problem is i don't know which are good so i call onto the escapist community for 3 reasons.

a) 3-5 comics i should get subscriptions to
b) graphic novels i should purchase (except watchmen and the dark knight returns cause i am already buying them)
c)A portal for comic book news and reviews (i.e. kotaku for games and cinematical for movies)

As in case you were wondering i live in the middle east and am of indian origin

I just buy them on Amazon. I recommend Batman year one and Saga of the Swamp Thing.

I loved the Preacher as well as Sandman, both of which you can get in graphic novels now.

You may be able to get Watchmen at an everyday book shop, it's a very popular comic, plus it got a re-release with the film.

Otherwise, Amazon is your best bet. Like Sewblon said, Swamp Thing is good one to pick up (until the end of Alan Moore's rain), also The Dark Knight Returns, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The Ultimates 1 & 2 (most definitely not 3), Ultimate Spiderman and please, for the love of god, The Sandman.

News site?...Theres not much news when it comes to comics. Your best bet is probably the Marvel and DC official sites. But, if you want some good information on comics that also geeky and funny as hell, try spill.com and the League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen podcasts.

IGN usually does a little bit on comics too.

300 and Sin City are two of the better Western graphic novels. If you consider manga an option as well check out Death Note and Berserk.

The closest thing to a portal for comics that I know of is 4chan's /co/ board, but it's more for discussion than news.

Amazons your best bet to buy comics for a decent price, although its quite easy to pick up Watchmen anywhere at the moment.

I'd recommend reading Year One and some other batman comics (IGN have a 25 greatest batman graphic novels you may want to look at)you may want to read before DKR.

If you can bear to read something without superheroes in it, then Maus is an absolutely sensational read. Drawn in black and white with quite simple artwork so perhaps its not your thing. If you liked Schindlers List you should like this though.

Just try and snap up anything by Moore or Gaiman that you can find. However V for Vendetta is very dated, while being a good story its age can count against it.

Jeff Smith's Bone is quite a fun read, you can pick up the whole series as one volume in b&w now, but the coloured version is good.

Jimmy Corrigan is very good, but theres little action in it so I'm not sure its what your looking for. If you ever feel like being thoroughly depressed or can sympathise with characters who feel alienated often then I can't recommend it enough.

I'm quite a newcomer to comics as well, but the ones I've mentioned have all been good experiences.

Was I the only one to click on this thread expecting some comic related disaster?

Pretty much most Batman comics from the past 10 years have been epic. Especially Frank Miller stuff... *drools*
Frank Miller and Alan Moore are gods, anything you can get by them is a guaranteed great read.
Also get Death of Superman, greatest selling comic of all time for a reason.

I really like The Red Star, and the Fathom series. Other Aspen and Top Cow comics are also good. I like the Star Wars stuff from Dark Horse too.
