yeah, its a little fanservicey (is that a word? it should be) but its still is well written, with likeable characters and whatnot
also, it has a Superhero who has Cinder blocks for hands and a head.
http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/217/syndablokk.png
How does he talk? who cares. He is just pure awesome.
Hah!!!
Actually because of the head of Cinder-Man remind me another cool comic book about a robot keeping a monster alive.
The reason is if the monster die, the robot also will get destroyed.

Greatest Assassin robot in comic period [I think....I don't have a good memory. silly me]

Has anyone said Chew yet? I feel like someone should have said Chew by now. If not, I'm going to say it. You should read Chew by John Layman.

Now admittedly it's not for everyone, but basically it's about an alternate world where bird flu lead to the government instituting a chicken prohibition, the FDA becoming the most powerful law enforcement agency, and a former cop who has the ability to get psychic visions of the food he eats (to kinda paraphrase from the book: If he eats an apple he can see where it was harvested from or what chemicals were used on it, or if he eats bacon he may see something else entirely...) the only food that doesn't affect him are beets...because reasons. Basically every five issues covers one major story, with each single issue having a case of it's own (making Chew one of the only comics I buy in trade rather than issue to issue, Volume 7 just came out recently so the series is a little over halfway over at this point)

Throughout the various food based cases, we meet some nutjobs, some fun wacky characters, the most kick-ass chicken you will EVER see in literature, and just lemme go over just a few of the other powers you will see in this series

1. A man who can't speak except through food
2. A man who can make anything, including fully functional weapons out of chocolate
3. Noodle. Guitar. Strings.

The series is well written with a few genuine twists and turns that may have you going "Holy shi-!" and some pretty fitting artwork for the mix of comedy and grotesque that the series goes for.

To finish this off, I'm just going to post a pretty spoiler filled synopsis of the very first issue (not the whole story arc, just the first issue, not super huge story spoilers) that people can read if they wish to know more and kinda see if it's something that might interest them. It really is a great series and I try to spread it to as many people as I can.

Okay, so bird flu has wiped out a lot of people, the government has made chicken illegal. Meet Officer Tony Chu (the cibopath, psychic food flashes) and his partner, John Colby staking out a chicken speakeasy. Upon seeing known murderer and well known chicken dealer, D-Bear enter the speakeasy, they go to arrest him but are halted by FDA Agent Mason Savoy. Savoy informs them that D-Bear is actually under FDA payroll and since he outranks two mere cops he advises they let the matter go and lets them enjoy a meal from the speakeasy, courtesy of the government to apologize for the inconvenience.

So they go into the speakeasy, naturally John just wants a bunch of extra crispy fried chicken, but Tony merely orders the soup. Upon tasting the soup, he gets psychic visions from the chef (who in the prologue had cut himself chopping onions for the soup and got some of his blood in it) which lets him find out that the chef is actually a serial killer who travels around, abducting, killing, and eating girls. He gets a few names, but his reading isn't that strong.

So the two cops bust into the kitchen to arrest him, sadly John doesn't quite make it and tells Chu to go after him. Chu confronts the chef in an alleyway, confronting him with his crimes. The chef has no idea how Tony knows this stuff, and opts to kill himself rather than speak or go back to prison and slashes his own throat. Tony insists he is still going to get the names and information of all the victims, so he starts eating the chef's face in order to get information.

Tony is caught in this act and is fired from the police force, but his abilities have not gone unnoticed by the FDA, who have sent Savoy to recruit him onto their team. Thus begins the new and exciting adventures of Agent Tony Chu in the FDA.

So that's just the first issue. It gets a lot more crazy and intriguing from there. Like I said, I understand if it's not for everyone, but hey, if this post convinces even one person to look into Chew, I'm happy.

EDIT: Oh, and if anyone does read it...apparently it's pronounced seebopath, not cybopath. Go figure...

-The artist knows her stuff. And she is the best kind of artist, the self taught. She is a pro, and has a job making art for videogames.

-The setting. Prohibition era Saint Lois.
-The artstyle. Its awesome.. Nouf said.

I keep bringing this out in post like these, Two Kinds.

Magic, love, lose, and rage all told in a story about a group of misfits joined together by a man who's past was one of blood slaughter and rage trying to seek redemption, or escape. A great tale with good characters and visuals as well as some comedic moments, and quotes http://twokinds.keenspot.com/?p=archive. P.S contains some sexual content, not to reviling give it a (13-up) kinda stuff.

Assasins with split personalities

You ever see those Edwardian sketches of people with animal heads and text beneath them?
well I'd describe the above as Agatha Cristie's Poirot with animals. A very cool steampunk alternative history world.
The last comic remind me another great comics, but it is only VERY well known to France:

I read some really well known comics, my favourite being Homestuck but I'm sure the majority of users here have at least HEARD of homestuck so ill try and post the ones i know have quite a small following.

Avas demon:

http://www.avasdemon.com/

A young girl and a demon make a pact to share a body with the aim of restoring the demon to the head of its vast militaristic empire and giving the young girl a life without demon infestation. Good characters. Beautiful art.

Derelict:

http://derelictcomic.com/?strip_id=126

Really awesome story about a woman in a post apoycalyptic world, full of mutants, abyssal sea creatures, kraken, demonic entities and thirsting soulless automaton with nothing but her boat. Stuck adrift on a seemingly endless ocean she struggles to scavenge and survive in a basically lawless sea FULL of giant monstrosities, pirates and worse. Wonderful strong female character. Due to the lonliness of the ocean there isnt a lot of dialogue so its a very visual novel. One part i found legitimately scary.

This part specifically was creepy as fuck.

Serenity Rose Volumes 1-3
http://www.heartshapedskull.com/
Aaron Alexovich's work will be familiar to you, whether or not you recognize the name, as he was a part of the production behind Invader Zim and Avatar, the Last Airbender. His personal project, Serenity Rose, has been around since the mid 2000's and has just finished it's third volume. It follows the life of a young woman with great magical powers, struggling to find her identity and enter into a world that doesn't really get her. It's well written, features great black and white artwork, and is a genuinely interesting coming of age story.

My favorite webcomic of all time is Bruno [http://www.baldwinpage.com/jan196.html]. It's a daily comic strip, and ever strip is just one panel long. In the beginning, it's just jokes, but after a while it starts growing more dramatic and story-focused. I cannot recommend it enough.

I don't know if someone would consider the new Guardians of the Galaxy as 'unknown' (I know literally only two other people that read it regularly) and it's super good. Everyone should pick it up.

For webcomics, I'd sat Ava's Demons is really good, and it updates (unlike alot of unknown webcomics I've read) which is a good thing.

I've been looking into comics like Frankenstein Mobster (a crime story involving monsters and humans living together in a crime-ridden city) and Elephantmen (humanoid animals that were former soldiers dealing with life in a futuristic society). I've heard Blacksad is really good, I plan to get that next.

The number of webcomics I read is somewhat large, but I believe the vast majority are fairly well-known. I say 'believe' because I never really bother to check up on these things. Do Schlock Mercenary and Freefall count as 'popular'?

Anyways, I'll put a few down regardless, especially a couple that I think deserve the hits.

Freefall [http://freefall.purrsia.com/default.htm]
Furry comic? Kinda? The main character is an anthropomorphic wolf, and the secondary main character is an alien squid in a suit, but everyone else is either a human or a robot. It's consistently funny, has a really good storyline going, and has a surprising amount of science in it. The main character is a representative of a new, genetically engineered species who is desperately trying to prove her worth so the company that made her will allow said species to flourish... only to wind up working for a highly irresponsible kleptomaniac (but good-natured) alien squid spaceship captain. Then things get complicated.

Oglaf
... okay, I would put a link to one of 'safe' comics, but I'm not sure if it would get me banned, so better safe than sorry. Basically, in the author's own words: This comic started as an attempt to make pornography. It degenerated into sex comedy pretty much immediately. I find it hilarious and it's worth checking out. Just don't read it where your parents/boss can see it.

Within a Mile of Home [http://www.withinamileofhome.com/]
At first glance, it's a standard fantasy webcomic, but I like it because all the different species intermingle and are treated like it's no big deal. One the main characters is an elf, but she doesn't go all high-and-mighty I-am-so-much-better-than-you on everyone else, she just tries to sell her stuff. It's slow going, so I'm not sure what the overarching plot is, but it's a good read.

Guilded Age [http://guildedage.net/]
Another standard-fantasy-at-first-glace webcomic. It's about a group of adventurers who start off just trying to take jobs and get by, but get mixed up in a massive war between an alliance of the human-like races and the more bestial and orc-like species. They essentially become government-sanctioned adventurers and get sent on particularly dangerous missions and diplomatic tasks. I like it, because the heroes are genuinely interesting, with actual flaws (but manage not to be horrible people (well, maybe not Frigg)) who struggle realistically with what they're asked to do. And there's about as much political intrigue as there action. And the the 'evil' races are given about as much development and screen time as the 'good' races. And...
... the whole thing takes place in a WoW-style MMO which was programmed using magic and is spiraling out of its creator's control. None of the characters 'inside' are aware of its true nature (except an insane cult which misinterprets its findings) and the creator is actively attempting to make the heroes fail.

Everblue [http://everblue-comic.com/]
Okay, this one is extremely slow to update, but I like what I've seen so far, so I want to support it. Basically, the setting is a more organized Waterworld. The story so far has been two characters building a skyship and then escaping from the dictatorship in which they live. Oh, and there's yet-to-be-explained magic flying around. And it's probably a love story.

So yes. Not sure if any of these are actually obscure, but I think they're worth a look.

and
Both by Anna Stiffler and Katie Copeland. The first one is a slice-of-life comedy that is just like a Sunday strip, always a joke and self-contained. I love the somewhat bizarre humour, but just how open the real life couple is. Plus, it's all based on stuff that happened in real life! FindChaos is a somewhat confusing, supernatural, dark tragedy thing. It's depressing as hell and makes no sense sometimes but it's compelling.

This is one of my favourites. It's a surreal, strange look at life with exaggerated everything and, let's be honest, it's stupid. But the author purposefully does this kind of stupid joke and it's awesome.
