Coming Back to Old Games

Almost everyone goes back to play old games at some point or another. Recently, I started playing Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. I actually remembered reading about it somewhere and began thinking of it while I was reading H.P. Lovecraft's works. So, I moseyed on over to my friend's house, and $10 and 25 minutes later, I was installing. I hadn't played it before in my life... but it's actually quite disturbing, with a good atmosphere and gameplay. Compared to today's technology, it's nowhere close, looks-wise. But I think it's pretty fun. So, Escapist, what old games have you recently discovered or come back to?

And more importantly, do they still hold up?

Red Alert. Now available for free, as EA have made it legal to download. Still better than RA3, even without nostalgia. It is actually a really good game, with different elements, and a story featuring interesting characters. Oh yes, and it isn't basically a porn game, which is what RA3 devolved into.

I bought Psychonauts on Steam the other day. It's even better than I remember, mainly because the version I owned previously was the disastrously ported PS2 version. Still, it's great fun.

I can usually go back and play some of my favorite RPGs without the graphical quality getting to me, and also pretty much any Street Fighter game.

I'm back playing Titan Quest to get me in the mood for Diablo 3. Alas I wish Age of Empires, Chaos Gate, Darkstone, Magic Carpet or Heavy Gear 2 played on my new machine...

Right now, I'm playing Super Mario Kaizo at the same time as Super Mario World. Dear Gods, I'm flying through the Mario World levels, when it takes days to get through one level of Kaizo.

I like going to back to old games but it's often a pain getting them to run on PC. Some ones I revisit fairly often:

Day of Defeat 1.3
Grand Theft Auto Vice City
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Heavy Metal FAAK 2
Bloodrayne
Flatout 2

Awesome games, in my opinion at least.

I had a full day of nostalgic games the other day!

Had a bit of Tekken 3, Crash Bandicoot 3, oh and I found my old CD of Virtual Springfield...that simpsons game from the mid 90's!

Star Fox 64 was the last I came back to, still damn fun. I remember renting that game like 8 times before my parents finally bought it for me. (KHAAAAN) It's my favorite game on the 64.

System Shock 2, really, it's a pain in the ass to get it to work on new PCs, and graphically it just ain't worth it, also, it's quite annoying that you have to upgrade your stats to even use a god damn handgun

but the experience is just something to behold, and the closest a modern game has ever got was Bioshock and Metro 2033

yes it's aged like shit, but it's still the finest game experience to be had, immersion/depth wise

I replay the original Grandia from time to time. I really don't notice any decline in my opinion of the graphics, probably because they were old-school even when I first bought the game. However, the sheer level of diversity and creativity amazes me to this day. It's obvious from the start that someone really put their heart and soul into that game world, and something like that never gets old. (Yeah, of COURSE the game holds up really well story- and gameplaywise, too. If it didn't, I wouldn't be replaying it, would I?)

I also enjoy the occasional bout of Super Mario World, from the SNES. After a lenghty period of modern games, with their celebrated cutting-edge graphics and gritty realism (Does anybody else find it annoying that the majority of modern games look EXACTLY THE SAME?), the retro, cartoony, side-scrolling, pixellated, two-dimensional SMW feels like a breath of fresh air!

MGS1 was the most recent classic I've played. They are still fun and engage nostalgia, when your life was far more innocent n' easy, while killing another nameless henchman. Classic games seem to be still entralling because there simple. I mean, just look at Popcap!

I managed to loose my "Soviet" disk for that game, so I could only play through the Allied campaign. UNTIL NOW!

I'm playing "Civ2 Test of Time" right now, and every so often I go back and play a round of DKC1-3.
