I couldn't find Red Alert 2 on steam, only Red Alert 3. Would people recommend that for a first C&C? It's $6 for what it's worth.
I personally thought red alert 3 was garbage and won't play it. Not sure if that helps. LOL

Personally I thought it was acceptable. I guess it's worth 6$ but don't expect too much out of it.
Thanks guys. I'll save the money for something else.
You should play red alert & red alert 2 if you can find them. You might be able to find them for free/ low cost. I <3 them! LOL

Thank you!! I would love to be able to play them again without the pixels being screwed up everywhere. I tried a few things I found online, but they didn't solve the problem of the 16 bit graphics issue.
I used this guide to get my original copy of Red Alert to run on Windows 7:

http://cncworld.org/?page=features/tutorials/ravistaguide

I know it says it's the guide for Vista, but I found it to work just fine for Windows 7 as well. Unfortunately their download link for the official 1.08PE patch doesn't seem to work for me. Thankfully these guys have a link that does work:

http://www.cncnz.com/downloads/redalert/patches/#.UfGcmG2p1xk

I hope that helps!

It's fairly mediocre, but it does have one thing that I thought was a good idea for a C&C game, something that would have been pretty cool in some of the older games. It has a cooperative campaign. So if you have a friend that you like to play Co-Op games with and you prefer Co-Op story modes, it's one of the few RTS games out there that I'm aware of that has this sort of thing going for it.

But yeah... other than that, I'd pretty much agree with the other two. I definitely wouldn't recommend it as a first game to play in the series. If you're limited to what's available on Steam, go with C&C 3: Tiberian Wars. Of the titles on Steam, it's the one that stays most faithful to the old Westwood games. That said, if possible, I'd still suggest checking out the originals instead. I'd imagine you can get them pretty cheap these days, it's just a matter of getting them to run on a modern PC.

Well its not on steam but you can get the ultimate collection on Origin and physical copies. I don't know if it is available on any other D2D services, but it includes every C&C game for 20 bucks. Technically 'C&C' 4 is there too but there is no law that says you must play that aspect of it.

I know "origin is evil" and all that jazz, but I know some of the games in the First Decade collection have compatibility issues with windows 7.

As for the individual games the only one I would outright avoid is 4, and if we are talking personal favorites than I have to go with Red Alert 2. But if you want something more modern C&C 3 and RA3 are solid(I don't understand the hate that RA3 gets sometimes).

Tiberium Dawn, Red Alert 1 + 2 and all the expansions for each. Most if not all of these can be found and downloaded legally for free and/or extremely cheap.

This is all you need to know.

Good call. Now, I say this as somebody who recently played RA3 and...I guess I liked it. But let me explain - I loved RA2 back in the day, the expansion was also big, and I very recently (a month ago) finally played RA3. As a RA game, as in a RTS to test your skills against people, I didn't like it. Suddenly the whole game was turned into a giant rock, paper, scissors - this unit can only shoot air but not eart, this other unit can only shoot earth but isn't effective against tanks, that other unit can kill tanks but not infantry, etc. It really felt like managing a rock, paper, scissors game. However, as a campaign, it was entertaining enough. I didn't play more than that. With that said, the expansion - Uprising, I thought was a massive improvement - still roock, paper, scissor-y but the campaigns were interesting and there was even a series of challenges where you play against computers and was quite fun.

Still, for a newcomer, I'd recommend Generals, I guess. Unless you really like cheesy story.

Yes, that's the start of the game. It is pretty much that and more. I was impressed with how many big name actors they got to star in the cutscenes. And the story is...laughable, I suppose. If you're a fan of that, then yeah, go for it - it's so bad it's good.

Definitely Renegade.....Kidding. My favorite are Red alert 2 + Yuri's Revenge and then any of the tiberium ones except the last one, NEVER PLAY TIBERIUM TWILIGHT!!! Though the whole tiberium thing could just be because I love the acting that comes from the guy who plays Kane. It's just so wonderfully over the top.

Red Alert has always been the slightly cartoony one, but 3 takes it to the extreme. If you like silly games then that might be the one for you. Just look up the presidential campaign trailers they made for the game.

I'm actually going to be the voice of dissent here. While it's true that RA 2 and its expansion are the best of the series, and while I fully understand why people don't like RA3 (I personally am not happy about the removal of the ore mining mechanic), I still enjoyed the hell out of it, especially the campaign mode, the Generals Challenge, and the nifty RPG campaign in the Uprising expansion (in which you play as a psychic girl who's pretty much Lucy from Elfen Lied mixed with River Tam from Firefly) as she goes berserk on pretty much everyone. Plus, it has Ric Flair, Tim Curry, and George Takei in it. Though I would agree that if you're looking for something with strong multiplayer, RA2 would be the one to get.

All of them up to Kane's Wrath. They were all really good. RA3 seems to have a mixed reception but most people I know have said it was good. Avoid C&C4 like the plague, it is literally a travesty! Actually somewhat insulting to play.

Up to tiberium sun can be found for free on the internet. Then Red alert 2 is possibly my favorite game ever, Generals is okay, Zero Hour makes it great, 3 is also okay, and red alert 3 is a disappointment, but the expansion was sort of fun. C&C 4 is boring as shit and should only be played to see how far the series has fallen, if at all.

C&C 4 is like the Invisible War of the Tiberium timeline. It departed heavily from the experience of base building and resource gathering and instead went for a baseless, action-oriented style akin to Dawn of War 2. I wouldn't recommend this particular title but I'm not fond of that type of RTS so as always opinions are opinions.
I actually prefer baseless RTSs. More tactics, less logistics.

Is that the only reason people hate CnC4? Did it do anything else wrong?

Thank you for taking the time to look it up for me. I don't have that compatibility on this pc though. It seems to work with windows 7 32 bit but not 64 bit. I am going to keep looking, or give up and build an old rig. I want to be able to play them again. LOL

That's odd. I am using Windows 7 64 Bit, and I was able to (somehow, apparently?) get the old games to run with this guide. I'll keep looking around and see if I can find anything else.

Personally, I didn't like red alert 3, so I'd recommend the other one in the series that I've played and enjoyed, C&C3 Tiberium wars. I found it very enjoyable, although I'm not the most hardcore RTS player out there...

To be fair, for some people, that's a huge reason to hate it. It's pretty much a complete departure from the style of gameplay used for everything else in the series (Sole Survivor and Renegade being the other exceptions, neither of which are well regarded either).

Personally, I like both styles, but as an example of the baseless style... it's just really not all that good. I mean, it's not terrible... it just doesn't really do anything special to make it a memorable experience to me.

The thing I disliked most about C&C4 was the story. Granted, the story for that series has been going downhill for years, and was never really all that great to begin with. It just really doesn't feel like a fitting conclusion to the Tiberian story, though I admit I probably would have ended it after Tiberian Sun: Firestorm.

So yeah, I guess my reason for not liking it was due to its overwhelming blandness.

I usually enjoy base-less style as well, but in order to make up for removing the base-building aspects of games, you generally have to increase the tactical aspects, and the game (to me) didn't really do a good job of that. Likewise, it felt like they really stripped the single-player to focus way more on the multiplayer.

I think a lot of people were angry about moving away from base-building because this was supposed to be the penultimate game in a series that is essentially one of the biggest traditional RTS series ever made, so this game should have been RTS refined to a mirror polish, not throwing out the fundamental gameplay aspects.

Anyway, I looked on Steam and I'm not seeing any C&C games available (on sale or otherwise) except RA3 with expansion, C&C 3 with expansion, and C&C 4. RA3 can be pretty fun if you don't mind an extraordinary amount of cheese (the Japanese units are awesome). Personally, I really liked C&C 3, and the expansion was great. I just thought they did a very cool job with the futuristic weapons and units, and the Scrin are very cool looking.

Oh, and Red Alert 3 is the one with armored Bears :)

I wonder if it has something to do with which release I use. I was a huge fan of the game back on my 486 so I have quite a few different discs for it somewhere. I had the original, then bought another that included aftermath and counterstrike, then I bought a gold pack that has a bunch of them then I bought the decade disc so I am going to go ahead and dig out the others and try every disc I have until I can get it to work. I really want to be able to use the expansions and the map editor as well. I loved making maps for it. If you got one of them to work I am sure I can get one of these I have around here to work. I got one to work but the graphics were a mess, you couldn't even see the videos. LOL

All the good ones were released before Red Alert 3, which has the bears in it :p

Where the hell is this special?! I want to get it right fucking now!

Edit: I think you've made a mistake. Can't see this anywhere.
