Committing Suicide: Could you do it?

This sounds like macho bullshit but, I couldnt take the easy way out no matter how much pain. Well maybe having my testicles cut into perfect 1cm squares is an exception to this rule. Id always go with the foolish glimire of hope.

Let's say, for arguments sake, that the Zombie apocalypse is upon us (we all know it's going to happen sooner or later).

You're boxed in a room with no supplies and a standard-issue handgun with 2 clips of ammunition.

There's a horde of zombies outside, and you've seen what they do to people before they die. So you're left with three options; either wait it out and hope zombies starve to death before you do, try to fight your way out, or turn the gun on yourself.

The above is of course just one random scenario. So here's my question to ya;

Given a situation where you face imminent death, be it by starvation, zombie -or nuclear apocalypse, or the chance of survival is infinitesimally small - would/could you take your own life to spare yourself any unnecessary pain?

I'm not sure what I'd do... but I'd probably wait until I knew I was definitely going to die before making a decision. If I had even a tiny hope of survival I'd probably explore that option first.... can always kill myself later if it doesn't work out...

In the event of the zombie apocalypse, I'd definitely go with the 'save one bullet' approach, since getting eaten alive sounds a bit messier and more painful than one clean shot to the cranium.

Otherwise, though, I would never, ever plan on killing myself. Life may suck today, this week, this month, or even the whole year, but something better is always coming, and you're not going to fix or help anything by taking your life.

...I don't know. I refuse to tell this to anyone I know IRL, but I came very close to attempting suicide during the worst of my depression. In a situation where I have little to no hope of survival, I think I probably could. Which worries me, despite the likelihood of my death weeks later anyway.

Unless, in this case, zombie meat is edible.

Depends on the type of zombies and how I'm surronded. If there the slow kind and are only surronding me in one direction get to the gap and walk away. If no escape is possible, infect myself with the zombie virus, maybe one day I can regain control of my mind.

I think "Going down fighting" is a lot uglier and messier than many people realize if followed to its logical conclusion (the actual "going down" bit after the "fighting" bit. The end of Reach was a nice reminder of this).

On the other hand, the closer to death you come, the more horrifying and immeasurably unknown the concept becomes. While it's very easy to deal with on hypothetical terms, every once in a while I get a glimmer of understanding of what it would be like to die. It's a feeling that would very likely stay my hand. But it may not win out over the prospect of a slow dismemberment and watching my own entrails getting pulled out of my chest cavity.
