This thread is destined to get derailed pretty fast, I reckon.

Unless you've been in a situation somewhat similar to the one described, I don't think you can know for sure what you're going to do. I don't think any one here has had much experience with starvation, but I'm sure that it will wear some one down to the point where suicide seems pretty tempting.

For me, barring suicide, I think I would rather face the possibility of death by zombification than die slowly and painfully and possibly go mad in the process of starvation. But then again I've never been in such a high stress situation and have no idea how I would act in such a scenario.

In the zombie scenario, I'd probably try and survive for as long as I could. Then if it came down to killing myself or being eaten alive/torn apart... I'd probably pull the trigger. Then knowing my luck, help would turn up 30 seconds later.

In the "zombies are about to eat you and you got a pistol with two bullets in it" scenario, killing yourself expresses a desire not to deal with being eaten alive. Even in this extreme scenario, it's a mighty cowardice move to simply avoid a moment's inconvenience.

The way I see it, life may be painful, but death is an inevitability. Considering this, there's really no sense in going out of my way to find it.

Given that all suffering is self-inflicted based off of our perception of life, curbing one's habit of mental self-flagellation is the more courageous solution.

To put it another way:

Doubtful.

I'd probably try my hand at survival, but if I was in a horrible situation in which getting eaten alive is the only outcome, I'd be sure to have at least two bullets available for suicide. You'd be surprised how many people end up in the hospital because of botched attempts at gun-based suicide, still alive albeit missing their faces because they didn't take into consideration recoil.

Let's say, for arguments sake, that the Zombie apocalypse is upon us (we all know it's going to happen sooner or later).

You're boxed in a room with no supplies and a standard-issue handgun with 2 clips of ammunition.
[sub]Remember, it's hard to wait out the apocalypse if there's no food to be had![/sub]

There's a horde of zombies outside, and you've seen what they do to people before they die. So you're left with three options; either wait it out and hope zombies starve to death before you do, try to fight your way out, or turn the gun on yourself.

^

The above is of course just one random scenario. So here's my question to ya;

Given a situation where you face imminent death, be it by starvation, zombie -or nuclear apocalypse, or the chance of survival is infinitesimally small - would/could you take your own life to spare yourself any unnecessary pain?
No, I don't think so.

Let me be honest, I'm not a deeply spiritual person, but I believe in God. While not a believer in the literal truth of The Bible, and someone who feels none of the current churches have things "right" (my gut feeling), I do believe suicide is a sin.

I'm not a strong person, and I've done a lot of bad things in my life when you get down to it. I'm not going to compound my sin by icing myself and guarantee going to hell, where otherwise I could very well be forgiven and redeemed.

As horrible as being eaten by zombies (or whatever) is, there is always hope, and when you weigh that against an eternity of torment, well... there is bad, and then there is worse.

Some might laught at me, because for once I am giving a faith based answer, but that's what I think.

Of course nobody knows for sure what they will do until they are in a situation like that, so I can only hope I would stick to my principles. Come an actual crisis, people find out what they are actually capable of. Many people are capable of a lot more than they thought they would be, others break down and fall far short of what they think they should be able
to do. There are some things nobody can fairly answer until they are there.

Well, in a dream I had that I was pretty convinced was real, I both suicided and shot my girlfriend (not in that order) when we were trapped in a basement during a zombie apocalypse. There was no way out, and they were the 'one bite and you're out' type.

Obviously not exactly the strongest rationale for me stating that I would, it's uh... more than nothing?

I would try to survive. Unless I got bitten by a zombie, then I'd be ridding the world of one more zombie.

Yes, I tended to get a lot of Intrusive Thoughts (look it up), and one of the most common was suicide ones (not the most common one, but one of them), so yeah I could do it.

I'd just try to wait it out and see who starves to death first. I mean, I know the zombies would have one up on me there, but I figure that there has to be some driving force behind them.

Shoot and try to run.

I may think of commiting suicide, but be too scared to do it.
