I thought I do a video series on common safety tips for being online and why this is smart and this is dumb, trying to word it so the generation that grew up with this and should know better (and often don't), and the generation that taught us how to use a spoon who get somewhat of a pass on why they don't understand, in layman's terms. I will try to use funny pictures and videos whenever possible.
I have have rough drafts on a couple of episodes (one on social media, another on the fact you technically publish what you post online and how will this bite you in the future, and another on Phishing with Nigerian Princes) but want to have a breather episode with some common computer and online terms before I delve further.
What I have so far:
Troll: A person online who is looking to start a fight, often times taking severe offence or being highly caustic in their language so to illicit confrontation. More times than not they are doing this for the fun of it in the same way most protesters on UC Berkeley are. They are named after the mythical monster of northern European lore, and have the same foul temperament. This is so prevalent that the practice of looking for a fight online is called Trolling.
Flame War: A intense argument online. So called because the discussion gets heated really fast, everyone involve seems to either unwittingly or on purpose fanning the agitation, and like a wild fire gets out of control. This is a bane on many a forum as it can take a good discussion and turn it into a war of words.
Moderator: Mod for short, these people are responsible for keeping things safe and sane on a message board or forum. They do so by giving out warnings to people that cannot toe the line with website rules or seem to be picking fights left and right.
Rule 34: A long time ago, someone took a look of all the memes and clichés of what happens online, and decided to come up with the internet rules. Rule 34 is that if it is out there someone has made porn of it. Generally fan done, and has little bearing on the official material, this hasn?t stopped people making an innocent search of their favorite cartoon character from their childhood or looking up their child?s favorite character and seeing them in a light that is anything but family friendly.
