People who think interstellar travel is impossible in Mass Effect without the Relays.

Yeah they have faster than light travel, but with the limitations of fuel and having to discharge their engines in a gas giant (given the distance and rarity of planets) would make things a lot dicier.

It is certainly much less convenient, but still totally doable.

For example, exploration using inactive Relays has been illegal for hundreds of years. For exploration, you HAVE to use standard FTL until you find the other side of the Relay THEN you can activate it.

Yes, but everyone makes it sound like nobody would even try, and would just sit there, twiddling their thumbs until it became time to start eating each other.

Oh, hell yeah they would try. I personally hope they made it back and had many millions of krogan babies, but it would definitively throw a whole lot of wrenches in the universes gears. Trade, government, and simple communication would be busted for at least a decade but more likely more. I hope they were able to invent a replacement system quick enough, but the way they let off leaves things looking a lot bleaker.
