L4D's community, particularly on the Steam forums. Oddly enough, I've run into more griefers on the PC than on the 360.

I've only ever had one bad Halo game, but I tend to play team co-op maps (Firefight, Grifball, Invasion) more than the hardcore competitive maps.
Really? I haven't played it for that long (got it Christmas), but most people I've played with have been ok. I haven't run into any griefers yet, is what I mean. I've played the 360 version, but only on local multiplayer.

All MMOs.

In some cases the in-game community is alright, but the forums seem to be invariably dominated by 24/7 lifers with 5-figure post counts who act like they're forum mods or, worse, devs, and have insanely bitter arguments about... well, everything, especially PVP and whatever the latest content release was.

I love MMOs, but I've actually found myself cancelling my subscription for a while after too much exposure to the awful spectacle of some forums.

One of the biggest reasons why I have a deep and brooding hatred for World of Warcrap is its community. I understand that not everyone who plays it is a moronic douchebag, but dang do the moronic douchebags ever make themselves stand out.

So, I don't know how, but a friend on PSN and I got into a talk about MW2, and I brought up an interesting point, MW2 could have been the best Call of Duty, ever! But, the community, the ones that use the OMA noobtubes, campers, all that, is what ruined it. So, thanks to the community, MW2 MP turned out to be really mediocre.
What can the escapist think of?
You can't expect people to play to a set of unwritten rules... The problem lies with the developer or you if you dont like how a game plays. I didn't mind mw2 personally, but I didn't mind camping/using launchers/having either tactics used against me.

The constant whinging about tactics in black ops made me go back to BC2 ( a better balanced game...)

Day of Defeat. After 2.1 was released and it eventually went commercial, it all went to shit. Haven't been there in years.

Starcraft 2, I liked the original Starcraft and I got into the beta, then I realized that everybody who plays starcraft multiplayer is a douchebag with no grasp on the concept of good sportmanship, then I stopped playing. I never bought the game, thanks for saving me 60 euro, Blizz!

And now we wait for the flames to roll in.
I don't play games online, but from what I can tell just from visiting the Escapist here and hearing people whine, I think the same could be said about EVERY FUCKING GAME THAT HAS ONLINE MULTIPLAYER.
...Hence why I don't play games online. Also that's hardly Blizzards fault.
WOW 12 MINUTES! A NEW PERSONAL BEST :D

You have a point, but in my opinion none is worse than the starcraft 2 multiplayer. Look at CoD, You have fratdicks and angry thirteen year olds playing along with nerds and such. Annoying, but tolerable, while starcraft 2's multiplayer base is made up entirely of nerds being dickheads.
One time during the beta, I had an opponent leave the game because I couldn't tell him how many "operations per second" I could do, It was my second game.

And that's my beef with online strategy games, it's not long before the "strategy" part of the game goes out of the window and into the ground, instead you have 'how fast you can execute the first order operative' matches.

Oh, and I wasn't blaming Blizzard, I was thanking them for giving me the insight not to buy a game for nerds with self-diagnosed "mental issues".
o_O "Operations per second?" "first order operative?" What? o_O

In any case I'll have to take your word for it as I haven't played a game online since Dark Forces II YEARS ago.
Also may I draw your attention to the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory. [http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/3/19/]
and that is EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

"Operations Per Second" haven't heard this of this one either, I'm assuming it is how fast you can do shit in starcraft.

"First order Operative" My bad, I used the wrong term, it's late. I've fixed my original post with the right term and an edit explaining it. :)

It really depends on the time of day/week you play the game. I work most weekends, so I really only get to play online games during the weekdays, when most of the immature kids (and it is almost always some twelve year old twit from Australia/Britain) are in bed.

Bad Company 2.

For fucks sake people. Stop fucking camping when you're the attacking team!
I've been playing Bad Company 2 since it came out. What are these campers you speak of?
First, what system are you playing on? xbox, ps3 or pc? I was on PS3 and was normally playing rush. When I was attacking, Most of my team was in the back, sniping, or on the front lines, camping and not moving forward to try and take the objective, which left me to do it by myself, making me quite pissed. When I was defending, I bored out my damned skull because there was nobody on the attacking team trying to move forward. Which meant that I had to go to the attackers to make something interesting happen.

Go into Bioware's forums and say you prefer Renegade/Paragon Shepard. Wait five minutes and you'll have your answer.

DotA. Oh god DotA. Half the games don't make it past five minutes because someone dies once and ragequits, and three quarters of the players have no idea what they're doing. Still, one eighth of the games are fantastic, so I grudgingly continue to slog through the crap in search of those few shining diamonds in the rough.

DotA

Yeah, the old Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne custom game. The learning curve is high for the game, and the players are the absolute whiniest, demanding, condescending group I've ever met in a video game. The rest of the custom games and the actual ladder play was fine, but DotA was terrible. Even when playing well, they'd still *****. It just took all the fun out of it. The current spin-offs HoN and LoL are better, but still sort of bad.

Camping noobs using ghost pro in cod. Also noobtubers. Srsly infinity ward/trayarch stop adding this shit to your games and add something useful like being able to set different killstreaks for different maps
Camping i kinda agree with, really thogh its bilt into the game mechanics do yo expect ever body to rin aroundlike headless chickens. But whats with all the hate towards the grenade launcher. It helps bad players be able to get some kills there are much more effective ay of killing people in MW2 e.g. spawn killing with a ballistic knife.

I think you guys need to stop obsessing over other people and just enjoy your videogames. You don't have to let the behavior of other people get under your skin and ruin an otherwise enjoyable experience.

I've seen quite a bit of Halo bashing on this thread. Hell it was bound to happen.

I have to admit that having played Reach lots recently I haven't come accross many douches. I think this might be because people don't seem to use mics as much or put themselves in a party(by my experience).

Yeah there was that one guy, he wasn't happy he couldn't have the Scorpion. When I managed to get in it first he kept throwing grenades and shooting at me and shouting aexpletives about my mum and all that. No need for it really is there? Just move on, I would. You will however, experience that kind of behaviour in any game.

I'd personally say MW2 had much worse attitude on it (gave up after that and haven't played Black Ops). I sincerely couldn't be bothered with online gaming after MW2 because of the people that were playing it. No offence to the minority of people that are not screaming cursing children (either mentally or physically).

It is only in the last 2 maybe 3 months that I have been playing online again. I have been much prefering my single player experiences up until recently.

All I have to say is "barren's chat," and for anyone that's played WoW, they know exactly what I'm talking about.

Never has there been a chat room purposely made for trolling like this one. The amount of trolling that goes on there are legendary.
I don't know, Trade can get pretty brutal. You're right though, Barrens definitely is no happy place, either.

Anyways, I have to say Half-Life 2's community did it for me. Hyping a game up to be the second coming of Christ only to find what I'd have otherwise considered a moderately entertaining shooter was a great disappointment for me.

Valve and Halo, I usually don't admit this, but I actually do like Halo, it's just the community gets so annoying that I almost prefer to be in denial than admit that I'm a fan.
I'm in the same boat with you for Halo. Love the games and the deep core community, but the surface is something to be ashamed of.

In fact both Bungie and Valve are both developers who have to deal with a shitload of people they shouldn't have to. If you ask me it speaks volumes about both developers to interact with the community as much as they do despite the people who give their respective communities a negative image.

Bad Company 2. The days of the Beta were awesome and so were March, April and May. After that, it just went down hill. The number of whiny little kids calling for unneeded nerfs skyrocketed. I took a break around June and guess what I see when I come back around the end of July?

EVERY GUN GOT NERFED!

The M16, for example, went from being useful to barely being a gun that shoots marshmallows. I took a look at the assault rifles, the SMG's and the LMG's to see the difference from what I remembered and just shook my god damn head. It was pathetic. The whiny, cancerous little whelps had infected a great, GREAT game and made it into a glaring, zombie like shell of its former self.

I can't even stand to read the forums anymore. It's full of nothing but little kids screaming at each other for differing playstyles, their K/D, their W/L ratio's, bragging about how they're being useful by fucking with someone who's playing Recon, jumping on anyone with a differing opinion, attacking people for their gun of choice and STILL trying to get shit nerfed that doesn't fucking need to be.

It makes me depressed that a game I loved so much has been warped and twisted because Dice decided that children whining were more important than adults appreciating the game for what it was.

Whiny little kids = Halo and CoD.
Furfags = Starfox
Ignorance = JRPG's.
Fanboy/girlism = Final Fantasy
People who feel everything needs to be about the realism and brown = GTAIV.

I'd say Halo, but it isn't as bad as Call of Duty.
I've encountered many more 8 year old kids who scream "fag" at me in Call of Duty.

I'd also like to nominate many of the hardcore Valve fanboys.
when i tried to get into playing WC3 online (didnt know about the strategy games untill i bought WOW way back when BC was almost done) i got kicked half the time for not having the map downloaded on the custom games.

and i never played the game, but i heard of an old MMO called Tabula Rasa, which had its fair share of issues which the devs couldnt get fixed fast enough to keep it alive, in large part because there was no official forum and the unofficial one was fan dominated, so not enough critique and suggestions to save it. (and it looked cool too. RIP Tabula Rasa, how i wish i couldve known thee) :'(
